What the Special Educator post requires that other TGTs do not

This is the one TGT stream in the notification that is defined by a statutory licence rather than a taught subject. The RCI Certificate of Registration and its CRR number must be live, not lapsed, and the B.Ed. Special Education must be from an RCI-recognised programme. A degree subject that would disqualify a Science or Social Studies applicant is irrelevant here; an expired CRR number is fatal.

Dates and windows

The calendar is common to every post advertised under CBSE Notification 01/2025 for both NVS and KVS, so Special Educator candidates followed the same dates as every academic TGT subject. Only the Tier-2 question paper and the eligibility gate differ. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

TGT Special Educator is not a subject post and treating it as one is the central error. There is no History or Chemistry behind it. What stands in place of the subject is a statutory qualification: an RCI-recognised B.Ed. in Special Education and a live registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India carrying a valid CRR number. Candidates lose this post at document verification far more often than in the examination hall, and almost always over the registration rather than the paper.

The CRR number is the real entry test

The notification requires registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India with a valid CRR number, not merely possession of a special education degree. RCI registration is time-limited and has to be renewed, and a certificate that has lapsed between the training year and the verification date does not satisfy a requirement written in the present tense. Equally, the B.Ed. Special Education must come from an RCI-recognised institution or be an RCI-accepted equivalent; a general B.Ed. with a disability elective does not substitute. Check the status of the registration and the recognition of the awarding programme before anything else in the preparation plan, because no examination score repairs either defect.

CTET Paper-II is required here too

The professional route does not replace the teacher eligibility requirement. The notification lists CTET Paper-II conducted by CBSE as mandatory for Special Educator as well as for the academic TGT subjects, with the standard five per cent relaxation in qualifying marks for reserved categories. Candidates from a rehabilitation or disability-studies background sometimes assume the RCI qualification covers the teaching licence and discover otherwise after the window closes. The general graduation requirement is any degree with at least 50 per cent marks, so the subject read at graduation is not a barrier; the two certificates, RCI and CTET, are.

495 posts, and what the number implies

NVS notified 495 TGT Special Educator posts: 202 UR, 49 EWS, 133 OBC, 74 SC and 37 ST. Only Computer Science at 653 is larger among NVS TGT categories, and the figure is more than three times Social Studies at 157. The scale reflects inclusive-education staffing across the Navodaya network rather than a subject workload. The practical consequence is a comparatively favourable ratio: the eligible population is limited by the RCI-recognised training pipeline, which is far smaller than the pool of BA and B.Sc. graduates competing for the academic subjects. With Tier-2 shortlisting at 1:3, roughly 1,485 candidates reach the NVS interview stage for this post.

The paper still follows the TGT structure

Nothing about the specialist route changes the examination format. Tier-1 is the same 100-question, 300-mark, two-hour OMR screening of reasoning, numeric ability, computer literacy, general knowledge, English and one other Indian language, with one mark deducted for each wrong answer and no subject content of any kind. Tier-2 is the same 2.5-hour, 100-mark paper of 60 objective questions with 0.25 negative marking and 10 descriptive questions of four marks each, set at graduation standard. The notification does not print a topic list and refers candidates to the detailed syllabus published under the recruitment heading on the NVS and KVS websites.

A residential school changes the support role

In a day school the special educator's work ends with the timetable. In a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya it does not. These are fully residential rural schools and the notification requires teachers to live on the Vidyalaya campus, with rent-free accommodation where available, and to carry house mastership, remedial and supervisory studies, co-curricular organisation, migration escort duty and student welfare. For a special educator that means individualised support runs through hostel and evening study hours as well as class time. NVS pays a 10 per cent special allowance for residential duties, and initial posting may be anywhere in India with change-of-station requests stated not to be entertained.

Common questions

Do I need RCI registration to apply for NVS TGT Special Educator?

Yes, and it must be current. The notification requires registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India with a valid CRR number, in addition to a graduation degree with at least 50 per cent marks and a B.Ed. in Special Education with at least 50 per cent or an RCI equivalent. The degree alone does not satisfy the requirement; the registration is a separate, renewable credential and a lapsed CRR number will not pass document verification. Candidates should confirm both their registration status and that their training programme is RCI-recognised.

Is CTET needed for NVS TGT Special Educator or does RCI replace it?

RCI registration does not replace CTET. The notification lists a pass in CTET Paper-II conducted by CBSE as mandatory for the Special Educator post, with five per cent relaxation in qualifying marks for reserved categories, exactly as for the academic TGT subjects. Both credentials are required together with the graduation degree at 50 per cent and the B.Ed. Special Education at 50 per cent or its RCI-accepted equivalent. Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti notified 495 TGT Special Educator posts in CBSE Recruitment Notification 01/2025: 202 unreserved, 49 EWS, 133 OBC, 74 SC and 37 ST. The TGT post is at the trained graduate level with Level-7 pay of Rs 44,900 to Rs 1,42,400, while the PRT post sits at the primary stage. Candidates should check which post their registration and application actually relate to.

How does the job differ between NVS and KVS for a special educator?

The notification, examination and calendar are shared, but the working conditions are not.
