NVS TGT Music paper and post at a glance

Dates and windows

The application, Tier-1 and Tier-2 dates are common to every subject and post in Recruitment Notification 01/2025, which KVS and NVS ran jointly through CBSE; TGT Music has no separate cycle. Only the Tier-2 result phase differs by post, and the Music tranche is recorded here from news reporting rather than a CBSE press note that names it. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

Most people who lose a TGT Music application lose it before the exam, on paperwork. The notification asks for two separate degrees: a bachelor's in Music or Performing Arts with music studied as a main subject in every year, at 50 per cent both in the subject and in aggregate, and, on top of that, a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution at 50 per cent. Accomplished performers holding a Sangeet Prabhakar, a diploma or a gharana training but no B.Ed do not meet the bar, however well they play.

A written theory paper, not an audition

The scheme of examination in the notification runs Tier-1, Tier-2 and an interview, with merit at 85 per cent Tier-2 and 15 per cent interview. No practical or performance test is listed for TGT Music. Selection therefore rests on a 100-mark written paper, of which 60 marks are objective at one mark with a 0.25 penalty and 40 marks are descriptive across ten questions. Candidates whose musical education has been oral and practical, in the traditional manner, need to convert that knowledge into written theory: naming and notating what they already perform. Reading and writing swaralipi accurately under time pressure is a learned skill separate from musicianship.

What the Music syllabus actually asks

The notification places the detailed subject syllabus on the KVS and NVS recruitment pages rather than in the document itself, and the published Tier-2 syllabus PDF on the KVS site does not set out a TGT Music section in the portion available. The Music outline as summarised by exam-tracking site Testbook covers the science of music, vocal technique, shrutis, talas and ragas, and Indian classical music forms, at graduation standard. Treat that as indicative rather than authoritative. Within it, the highest-yield ground is systematic: the twenty-two shruti scheme, thaat classification and raga lakshana, tala structures with their matras and vibhags, and the Bhatkhande and Paluskar notation systems.

124 posts, and the arithmetic of a small subject

The NVS count is 124: 52 unreserved, 12 OBC, 33 SC, 18 ST and 9 EWS, with single-figure PwBD slots. Shortlisting runs at 1:10 from Tier-1 and 1:3 into the interview, applied per category, so the EWS row at nine posts produces a field of roughly 27 interviewees, and the OBC row at twelve produces about 36. Small numbers cut both ways. The eligible pool is also small, because the double degree requirement filters heavily, but a single strong cohort in one category can close a whole row. Judge your prospects from your own row, never from 124.

Music sits inside the TGT tables, not a separate annexure

It is commonly assumed that music, art, physical education and library posts are advertised under a separate miscellaneous category of teachers. In Recruitment Notification 01/2025 they are not held apart in that way on the NVS side: Music appears within the TGT vacancy tables with subject-specific qualifications set out in the essential qualifications section. The practical consequence is that a TGT Music candidate follows the ordinary TGT route at every stage, sitting the same Tier-1 as TGT Mathematics or Hindi and the same 28 March Tier-2 slot. Primary Teacher (Music), a different post, was examined separately on 29 March.

The job in a residential Navodaya campus

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are co-educational, fully residential schools up to senior secondary level, and the notification requires teachers to stay on the Vidyalaya campus, with rent-free accommodation where available. For a music teacher that reshapes the role: a residential school runs assemblies, house activities, cultural evenings and inter-Vidyalaya events, and the music teacher is usually the person who carries them. Selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India and requests to change station or region are not entertained, which for a musician also means teaching in regions whose classical tradition may not be the one they trained in. Candidates must show proficiency to teach in Hindi and English.

How many NVS TGT Music vacancies were there in the 2025 notification?

One hundred and twenty-four on the NVS side of Recruitment Notification 01/2025: 52 unreserved, 12 OBC, 33 SC, 18 ST and 9 EWS, with PwBD slots of one, two, one and one across the four categories. This is the NVS column only; KVS advertised separate figures in the same joint document. TGT Music is one of the smaller TGT lines, well below Mathematics at 279 and Hindi at 251.

Do I need a B.Ed for NVS TGT Music, or is a music degree enough?

You need both. The notification requires a bachelor's degree in Music or Performing Arts from a recognised institution with at least 50 per cent marks in the subject and in aggregate, with music studied as a main subject in all years of the degree, and, separately, a bachelor's degree in Education from an NCTE-recognised institution or university with at least 50 per cent.
