Every date above is common to all subjects and all posts in Recruitment Notification 01/2025, which KVS and NVS ran as a single joint recruitment through CBSE; TGT Mathematics does not have a calendar of its own. CBSE named individual subjects only in the phased Tier-2 result notes, and TGT Mathematics was not singled out in the press notes published on 17 August or 5 September 2026. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

Mathematics candidates come to this recruitment better prepared than most for the wrong paper. They clear Tier-1's numeric ability section comfortably, read that as evidence of standing, and discover too late that Tier-1 is a screen worth nothing in the merit list. The whole contest is the 100-mark subject paper on 28 March plus a 15 per cent interview, and the subject paper contains a descriptive half that a purely objective preparation routine never touches.

The arithmetic of two different penalty regimes

Tier-1 and Tier-2 punish guessing at different rates and reward different behaviour. In Tier-1 each question carries three marks and a wrong answer costs one, a one-third penalty, across 100 questions for 300 marks. In Tier-2 each objective question carries one mark and a wrong answer costs 0.25, a one-quarter penalty, across 60 questions. The expected value of a guess between two plausible options is positive in both, but the Tier-2 objective half is only 60 marks against 40 descriptive, so hours spent drilling speed on objective mathematics have a capped return. Ten descriptive questions mean showing the working

Forty of the hundred Tier-2 marks come from ten descriptive questions, four marks apiece, with no negative marking. Candidates trained entirely on multiple-choice practice tend to write compressed, unlabelled working and lose two marks a question through nothing worse than presentation. Rehearse full written solutions to timed sets, and budget roughly one hour of the 2.5 for this half.

Graduation standard, but the TGT ceiling is school mathematics

The notification sets the TGT subject paper at graduation standard and places the detailed syllabus on the KVS and NVS recruitment pages rather than inside the notification itself. The published Mathematics outline, as summarised by Testbook, spans real numbers, polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, arithmetic progressions, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, calculus, statistics and probability. That mixture matters: the secondary-school topics are where question volume sits, while the degree-level material sets the difficulty of individual items. Candidates who prepare only from a graduate syllabus underweight the school topics they will actually teach, and those who prepare only from class-ten material find the harder items unreachable.

The headline 279 breaks into 116 unreserved, 27 OBC, 75 SC, 41 ST and 20 EWS, with three PwBD slots in each of four categories. The OBC figure of 27 is strikingly small for the largest TGT subject, while SC at 75 is generous in absolute terms. Since both the 1:10 Tier-1 screen and the 1:3 interview call are applied per category, these counts, not the total, determine how many competitors clear each gate alongside you. An OBC mathematics candidate is in a far tighter field than the total suggests, and an EWS candidate tighter still at 20 posts.

Teaching mathematics in a residential Navodaya

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are co-educational, fully residential schools up to senior secondary level, and the notification requires teachers to stay on the Vidyalaya campus, with rent-free accommodation where available. Intake is largely rural and selected through a talent-search test, so a TGT Mathematics appointee typically meets able students with uneven prior schooling, and the working day extends into supervised evening study. The interview, at 15 per cent of merit, draws on this. Answers about remediating gaps in a boarding cohort, or running evening problem-solving sessions, land better than restated pedagogy. Postings are anywhere in India, and requests to change station or region are not entertained.
