NVS TGT post structure at a glance

Nothing in Tier-1 tests the subject a candidate will teach. Two hundred and forty of its 300 marks come from General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge at 20 questions each; English Language and a Modern Indian Language carry 10 questions and 30 marks apiece. The subject appears for the first time in Tier-2, where the detailed syllabus is published separately on the KVS and NVS websites.

Dates and windows

This calendar is common to every post in the joint KVS and NVS recruitment, so TGT candidates share it with PGT, PRT and non-teaching applicants. Only the Tier-2 date and the result phase differ by post. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

Most candidates prepare for an NVS TGT post as though it were a slightly differently branded KVS TGT post. The examination is indeed identical, because CBSE runs one process for both bodies, but the job is not. A Navodaya TGT lives at the school, holds charge of a house of residential children, supervises study outside class hours and can be posted to any district in the country on first appointment. That obligation is written into the notification, not into the fine print of a later posting order.

Tier-1 gives the subject no advantage

Tier-1 is a two-hour OMR paper of 100 questions and 300 marks with six parts: General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge at 20 questions and 60 marks each, then English Language and a Modern Indian Language at 10 questions and 30 marks each. One mark is deducted for every wrong answer, which on a 300-mark paper is a heavy penalty for guessing. It is screening only and carries no weight in the final merit, which is 85 per cent Tier-2 plus 15 per cent interview. The shortlist is 1:10 against vacancies, so with 2,978 TGT posts the Tier-2 field is large in absolute terms but still cut post-wise and category-wise. Time spent revising subject content before this stage buys nothing.

Where the graduate standard actually bites

Tier-2 is the paper that decides selection. It runs two and a half hours for 70 questions and 100 marks: 60 objective questions of one mark each with a quarter-mark penalty, and 10 descriptive questions of four marks each carrying 40 marks in total. For TGT the standard is graduation level, one step below the post-graduate standard applied to PGT candidates. The descriptive block is where most of the spread appears, because 40 of 100 marks depend on written answers marked by an examiner rather than on an optical reader. The notification does not print the subject syllabus; it states that the detailed syllabus is on the KVS and NVS websites, so candidates must take the syllabus from there rather than from the notification.

The subject you pick sets the odds

The 2,978 TGT posts are very unevenly distributed. Computer Science alone accounts for 653, Special Educator 495, English 281, Mathematics 279, Hindi 251, Science 208 and Social Studies 157, while Art, Music, Library and the two Physical Education streams sit between 124 and 144 each. A further 443 posts are TGT (3rd Language) across 16 regional and modern Indian languages. Because shortlisting works on fixed ratios rather than a fixed mark, the effective cut-off in a subject is a function of how many posts that subject carries against how many people sat for it. CBSE has not published subject-wise cut-off marks for this cycle, so any figure circulating as a subject cut-off should be treated as unverified.

Qualification traps specific to NVS TGT

For the academic subjects the requirement is a four-year integrated NCTE degree with 50 per cent both in the subject and in aggregate, or a bachelor's degree with 50 per cent plus a B.Ed with 50 per cent, together with CTET Paper-II and demonstrated competence to teach in both English and Hindi. Computer Science accepts a BCA, a graduation with Computer Science or IT as the main subject, or a BE or BTech in CS or IT, each at 50 per cent, plus B.Ed and CTET Paper-II. Special Educator requires RCI registration with a valid CRR number in addition to CTET Paper-II, which is relaxed by five per cent for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates. The bilingual teaching condition is a stated requirement, not a preference.

Residential duty, transfer liability and pay

NVS runs 653 fully residential co-educational schools in every state except Tamil Nadu, headquartered at NOIDA with eight regional offices, and its Vidyalayas teach Class VI to Class XII. Appointment carries an obligation to reside on campus in rent-free accommodation, to take House Mastership, to supervise remedial and evening study and to escort children during the migration scheme, and probation is assessed on those residential duties as well as on classroom work. A ten per cent special allowance attaches to the post for that reason. Initial posting may be anywhere in India, and candidates selected as TGT (Regional Language) are posted outside their linguistic state to start with. Pay is Level 7, Rs 44,900 to Rs 1,42,400, with an upper age limit of 35 years.

How many NVS TGT vacancies were there in the 2025 notification?

Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti advertised 2,978 TGT posts across twelve streams and a further 443 TGT (3rd Language) posts across sixteen languages. The largest single stream is Computer Science with 653 posts, followed by Special Educator with 495, English with 281, Mathematics with 279, Hindi with 251 and Science with 208. Art has 144, Library 134, Physical Education Female 128, Physical Education Male 124 and Music 124. The notification states that vacancies are tentative and may increase or decrease, and no waiting list is maintained.

Is NVS TGT the same exam as KVS TGT?

The examination is the same. CBSE conducts a single recruitment, Notification 01/2025, for both Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, with one application portal, one Tier-1 paper on 10 and 11 January 2026 and one TGT Tier-2 paper on 28 March 2026. The vacancy tables, the employer and the service conditions differ. The notification allows one application to cover more than one post but requires a separate fee for each post, so applying to both bodies means paying twice.

Do NVS TGT teachers have to live on the school campus?

Yes. The notification states that teachers are required to stay in the Vidyalaya campus, with rent-free accommodation provided, and lists House Mastership, supervision of remedial and study hours, organisation of co-curricular activities, escorting students during migration and general responsibility for student welfare among the duties. Performance during probation is assessed on those residential duties alongside teaching ability. A ten per cent special allowance is paid for residential duties to NVS appointees other than Assistant Commissioner (Academics).

Is CTET Paper-II compulsory for NVS TGT?

For the academic TGT subjects the notification lists CTET Paper-II as an essential qualification alongside the degree and B.Ed requirement, and it also applies to TGT Computer Science and to the Special Educator stream, where a five per cent relaxation is available to SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates. The entries for the non-academic streams such as Art, Music and Library are written differently and are built around the specialist bachelor's degree and B.Ed. Candidates in those streams should read their own entry in the notification rather than assume the academic-subject condition applies.

What is the age limit and relaxation for NVS TGT?

The upper age limit for TGT is 35 years. Relaxations listed for NVS are five years for SC and ST candidates, three years for OBC (NCL), ten years for women across all categories applying to teaching posts, five years for regular NVS employees, and ten to fifteen years for PwBD candidates depending on category. Ex-servicemen deduct the period of military service, with a maximum three-year relaxation where service was under six months. PGT is capped at 40 years and PRT, which is a KVS-only post in this notification, at 30.

When will the NVS TGT result and interview happen?

Tier-2 results are being declared in phases rather than together. The first phases appeared on 17 and 18 August 2026 and covered the regional-language TGT posts among others; TGT Music and TGT Physical Education were reported on 3 September 2026 and TGT Hindi on 7 September 2026. CBSE's press note of 18 August 2026 says the remaining posts are being finalised and will continue in phases, and that interview schedules and call letters will be placed in candidate logins once fixed in consultation with KVS and NVS.
