The NVS PGT Physics selection, stage by stage

No Physics appears in Tier-1, which is a two-hour screening paper awarding three marks a correct answer and deducting one for a wrong one, with shortlisting at 1:10 and no carry-forward into merit. Tier-2 runs two and a half hours for 100 marks, set bilingually in Hindi and English, and carries 85 per cent of the final merit against 15 per cent for the interview. The post is Level-8, Rs 47,600 to Rs 1,51,100, upper age limit 40 years, requiring a master's degree and a B.Ed. each with at least 50 per cent marks.

Dates and windows

Every date except the result is shared with the rest of Notification 01/2025 and with both organisations: a single notification, one application window and one pair of examinations covering PGT, TGT, PRT, Principal and the non-teaching posts in KVS and NVS alike. Physics candidates for the two bodies sat identical papers. Subject result dates diverge only because CBSE published Tier-2 outcomes in twelve phases between 17 August and 14 September 2026. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

Physics candidates most often misjudge what a large vacancy count means. With 186 NVS posts and 213 in KVS, a 1:10 Tier-2 shortlist let 4,524 candidates through, the biggest subject field in the whole drive, and a 1:3 interview shortlist still leaves several hundred people competing for the Navodaya posts. Competition here survives deep into the process instead of thinning early. The second error is preparing a composite paper: Tier-1 contains no Physics whatsoever.

The one subject where KVS is the bigger employer

Physics is the exception to the pattern in this notification. NVS notified 186 posts against 213 in KVS, whereas Navodaya outnumbered Kendriya Vidyalaya in both History, 110 to 75, and Mathematics, 167 to 80. The NVS split is 78 unreserved, 18 EWS, 50 OBC non-creamy-layer, 27 SC and 13 ST, with eight PwBD reservations spread evenly across locomotor, visual, hearing and other categories, the largest PwBD allocation of the three subjects. A candidate choosing between the two organisations in this cycle was therefore not trading vacancy volume in Physics so much as trading a day school posting for a residential campus one.

The largest Tier-2 field in the recruitment

CBSE's shortlisting statistics of 24 March 2026 record 4,524 candidates carried into the Physics Tier-2 paper across both organisations: 1,802 unreserved, 1,221 OBC non-creamy-layer, 628 SC, 420 EWS, 302 ST and 151 in the PwBD columns. That is larger than Mathematics at 2,868 and more than twice History at 2,014, and it is a direct consequence of the 1:10 ratio applied to 399 posts. At a 1:3 interview shortlist roughly 560 candidates should be called against the Navodaya posts. The practical reading is that a Physics candidate cannot rely on the subject paper thinning the field; it has to be won on marks.

Tier-1 has no Physics and eliminates physicists

Tier-1 is 100 questions for 300 marks in two hours: General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge at 20 questions and 60 marks each, plus English and one Modern Indian Language at 10 questions and 30 marks each, with three marks for a correct answer and one deducted for a wrong one. PGT candidates sat it in the 11 January 2026 morning shift. A Physics postgraduate ought to take the 60 Numeric Ability marks nearly in full, since that part is arithmetic reasoning rather than physics. The reliable losses are Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge, together 120 of the 300 marks, and they answer to weeks of ordinary factual revision, not to subject depth.

Written Physics is about a third of the selection

Tier-2 is 70 items for 100 marks in two and a half hours: 60 objective questions of one mark with 0.25 deducted for error, and 10 descriptive questions of four marks each carrying no penalty. Since merit is 85 per cent Tier-2 and 15 per cent interview, the descriptive block is close to a third of the entire selection. For Physics that means derivations written out, diagrams labelled, assumptions stated and units carried through, in a hall where many candidates have not written long-form physics since their master's examinations. The objective penalty is mild enough that reasoned elimination pays; the real hazard is leaving the descriptive section to the final twenty minutes.

A residential science posting, anywhere in India

The notification records 653 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas functioning across the country except in Tamil Nadu, largely rural, fully residential and co-educational, and requires teachers to stay on the campus with rent-free accommodation as available. In addition to teaching, the listed duties are House Mastership, remedial and supervisory studies, organising co-curricular activities, escorting students on migration and other official purposes, and student welfare generally, and the notification says performance in all these areas is assessed during probation along with teaching ability. Initial posting may be anywhere in India and a request to change station or region will not be entertained under any circumstances, which is a materially harder transfer position than the Kendriya Vidyalaya equivalent.

When was the NVS PGT Physics Tier-2 result declared?

On 23 August 2026, in the fifth phase of CBSE's Tier-2 result release for Notification 01/2025, in the same press note as Vice-Principal and Stenographer Grade-II. One result serves both KVS and NVS candidates because the examination is common. As PGT Physics carries an interview, the result indicates shortlisting status rather than marks at this stage, with marksheets promised within fifteen days of the final result once the interview process is complete. Chemistry had been declared two days earlier and Biology followed on 28 August.

What is different about an NVS Physics posting compared with KVS?

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential, co-educational schools, mostly rural, and the notification records 653 of them functioning across India except in Tamil Nadu. Teachers must live on the campus, with rent-free accommodation as available, and carry House Mastership, remedial and supervisory studies, co-curricular organisation, escorting students on migration and general student welfare on top of teaching; probation assesses all of it. Selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India and requests to change station or region will not be entertained. Kendriya Vidyalayas are day schools and carry none of this.

Where is the official NVS PGT Physics syllabus published?

Not in the notification. Notification 01/2025 fixes the Tier-2 standard for PGT posts at postgraduate level, against graduation level for TGT and senior secondary for PRT, and states only that the detailed syllabus is published under the recruitment heading on the KVS and NVS websites, where it is issued as a separate Tier-II syllabus document for Notification 01/2025.
