NVS PGT History: where the subject actually appears

Tier-1 runs two hours and is purely a screening paper: three marks a correct answer, one deducted for a wrong one, shortlisting at 1:10, and no carry-forward into merit. Tier-2 runs two and a half hours for 100 marks and is set bilingually in Hindi and English. Final merit is 85 per cent Tier-2 and 15 per cent interview. The post sits at Level-8 of the pay matrix, Rs 47,600 to Rs 1,51,100, with an upper age limit of 40 years.

Dates and windows

Every line above except the result is common to the whole of Notification 01/2025: one notification, one application window and one pair of examinations covering PGT, TGT, PRT, Principal and the non-teaching posts in both KVS and NVS. History candidates for the two organisations sat the same papers on the same days. Result dates diverge because CBSE released Tier-2 outcomes in twelve phases between 17 August and 14 September 2026, and History fell in the third. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

Two things are misread about this post. The first is that it is a smaller version of the Kendriya Vidyalaya vacancy: it is not, because NVS notified 110 History posts against 75 in KVS, so Navodaya is the larger part of the opportunity. The second is that a History postgraduate is competing on History from the start. Tier-1 contains no History at all, and it is where most subject-strong candidates are eliminated.

The Navodaya History block, and the arithmetic on it

NVS notified 110 PGT History posts: 46 unreserved, 11 EWS, 29 OBC non-creamy-layer, 16 SC and eight ST, plus four PwBD reservations spread across locomotor, visual, hearing and other categories. KVS notified 75 in the same table, giving 185 History posts between the two bodies. Tier-1 shortlists at 1:10 against notified vacancies, and CBSE's shortlisting statistics of 24 March 2026 show 2,014 History candidates carried into Tier-2 once ties are absorbed. Interview shortlisting is 1:3, so roughly 330 candidates should reach interview against the Navodaya posts alone. The field narrows late rather than early, which is the opposite of the intuition most candidates bring from state teaching recruitment.

The screening paper has no History in it

Tier-1 is 100 questions for 300 marks in two hours, split as General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge at 20 questions and 60 marks each, plus 10 questions and 30 marks each for English and a Modern Indian Language of choice. A correct answer earns three marks and a wrong one costs one, a third of the value, so blind guessing is expensive. PGT candidates sat this in the 11 January 2026 morning shift alongside Principal, Vice-Principal and Assistant Commissioner applicants. History postgraduates typically carry the General Knowledge and language parts and lose their margin on Numeric Ability and Basic Computer Literacy, which together are 120 of the 300 marks and respond to plain revision rather than subject depth.

Forty marks of Tier-2 are written History

Tier-2 is 70 items for 100 marks in two and a half hours: 60 objective questions of one mark with 0.25 deducted for error, and 10 descriptive questions worth four marks each with no penalty. Because merit is 85 per cent Tier-2 and 15 per cent interview, the descriptive block is roughly a third of the whole selection and it is the part History candidates practise least. Written history under a clock rewards a stated position, a named counter-position and one line of evidence inside a short paragraph, not an essay. The milder Tier-2 penalty also changes tactics: eliminating to two options and answering is worth it here, unlike in Tier-1.

The official History syllabus is not in the notification

Notification 01/2025 sets the Tier-2 standard for PGT posts at postgraduate level, against graduation level for TGT and senior secondary for PRT, and then says only that the detailed syllabus is published under the recruitment heading on the KVS and NVS websites. The subject-wise document is a separate publication and we could not open it while preparing this note, so we will not reproduce a History unit list we have not read. Coaching sites circulate topic lists of their own; treat those as indicative and download the official Tier-II syllabus from the KVS or NVS recruitment page before fixing a revision sequence around any of them.

The job is residential, and that is examined on probation

This is where an NVS History post differs materially from the Kendriya Vidyalaya equivalent. The notification records 653 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas functioning across India except in Tamil Nadu, mostly rural, fully residential and co-educational, and requires teachers to live on the campus with rent-free accommodation as available. Beyond teaching, the listed duties are House Mastership, remedial and supervisory studies, organisation of co-curricular activities, escorting students on migration and student welfare generally, and the notification states these are assessed during probation alongside teaching ability. Initial posting may be anywhere in India and a request to change station or region will not be entertained under any circumstances.

When was the NVS PGT History Tier-2 result declared?

On 20 August 2026, in the third phase of CBSE's Tier-2 result release for Notification 01/2025, in the same press note as PGT Economics and TGT Work Experience. One result covers both KVS and NVS candidates because both organisations recruit through the same examination. Since PGT History carries an interview, the result at this stage indicates shortlisting status rather than marks; CBSE has said marksheets will be issued within fifteen days of the final result, after the interview process is complete.

Is any History asked in the NVS PGT Tier-1 paper?

No. Tier-1 is a general screening paper of 100 questions for 300 marks in two hours: General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge at 20 questions and 60 marks each, and language competency in English and one Modern Indian Language at 10 questions and 30 marks each. Yes. The notification states that Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential institutions and that teachers are required to stay in the Vidyalaya campus, for which rent-free accommodation as available is provided. In addition to teaching, the post carries residential duties: House Mastership, remedial and supervisory studies, organising co-curricular activities, escorting students on migration and other official purposes, and student welfare generally. Performance in these areas is assessed during the probation period alongside teaching ability. This requirement is specific to NVS and does not apply to Kendriya Vidyalaya posts.

Could a candidate apply for PGT History in both KVS and NVS?

Yes, in this cycle, after a mid-window change. The notification provided that a candidate applying for a similar post in both KVS and NVS would pay the fee only once. A public notice of 4 December 2025 extended the deadline to 11 December 2025 and recorded that the two organisations had aligned qualifications so that both applications were possible, and a further notice of 13 December 2025 reopened the portal until 15 December 2025 for candidates previously blocked from the second organisation by the qualification difference.
