Where English actually earns marks in this recruitment

An English postgraduate's subject advantage is worth 30 marks out of 300 at the screening stage, ten per cent, and Part VI is deliberately in another language. The screen is cleared on reasoning, arithmetic, basic computing and current affairs like everyone else's, and it is cleared under a heavy penalty of one mark deducted from three for each wrong answer. The subject expertise pays only from Tier-2 onward, where it pays entirely.

Dates and windows

Every date here is common to all posts and subjects in Notification 01/2025 across both NVS and KVS, with the single exception of the last row: PGT English was named among the posts whose Tier-2 results were released in the early-September tranche of the phased declaration that ran from 17 August to 14 September 2026. Interview dates are issued individually through candidate logins. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

English candidates walk into this recruitment believing the language sections will carry them. They will not. Of Tier-1's 300 marks, English competency is worth 30 and the other language part is worth 30 in an Indian language, so 240 marks turn on reasoning, arithmetic, computer literacy and general knowledge. Every year a large number of strong English postgraduates are eliminated before their subject paper is ever opened, by a screening test that does not test their subject. The second misjudgement follows from the first: because the subject paper is skills-based rather than canon-based, a candidate who prepared literary history rather than unseen comprehension and formal writing can clear the screen and still underperform on their own subject.

Ten per cent is not an edge worth planning around

Part V of Tier-1 is ten questions, 30 marks, on English language competency at a general standard, and Part VI is ten questions in a Modern Indian Language. Even a candidate who scores every mark in Part V carries a 30-mark advantage into a 300-mark test where one mark is deducted from a three-mark question for each wrong answer, so four careless errors in reasoning wipe the whole of it out. The screen cuts to ten candidates per vacancy, which for 146 English posts means around 1,460 seats at Tier-2. The practical implication is that autumn revision should be weighted toward numeric ability and basic computer literacy, which are the two parts an English graduate is least likely to have touched since school.

The published paper is skills-first, not canon-first

Section A of the Tier-2 English syllabus is Reading Comprehension on three or four unseen passages drawn from prose, poetry, drama, articles, editorials and scientific and literary extracts, assessed on comprehension, inference, vocabulary, tone, rhetorical devices and logical sequencing. Section B is Writing Ability, with B1 covering formal and informal letters including business letters, job applications, letters to the editor, complaints and personal letters, plus report writing in factual, newspaper and analytical forms, and notices, circulars and press releases; B2 covers essay writing in argumentative, analytical, reflective and descriptive modes. A candidate who prepares literary history and neglects the unseen passage and the format conventions of a press release is preparing the wrong paper.

Candidates should open the PDF from the KVS document page directly and read the English section to its end rather than relying on any secondary summary, including this one. Coaching sites reproduce fuller lists, but none of them is the notification, and the notification itself says only that the detailed syllabus is on the KVS and NVS websites under the Recruitment heading.

The descriptive section is where the specialism repays

Forty of the hundred Tier-2 marks come from ten descriptive questions with no negative marking, and this is the only place in the whole selection process where an English postgraduate's training is directly and fully rewarded. Because Tier-2 supplies 85 per cent of the final merit against 15 per cent for the interview, those forty marks are effectively 34 per cent of a candidate's selection score. Write to the format the question names: a report is not an essay, a notice has a fixed shape, and an argumentative essay under time needs a stated position in the first sentence. The paper allows 2.5 hours for 70 questions, so a plan of roughly a minute per objective question leaves under an hour for all ten written answers.

NVS counts English as a mainstream subject, and posts you anywhere

The NVS vacancy tables separate mainstream PGT subjects from Modern Indian Language PGT posts. English sits in the mainstream list at 146, alongside Physics, Mathematics and Economics, while the entire regional-language PGT pool comes to 18 posts across Assamese, Bangla, Manipuri, Garo, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. An English applicant is therefore competing in one of the largest pools in the recruitment, not a niche one. Appointment brings Level-8 pay of Rs.47,600 to 151,100, an upper age limit of 40, a requirement of proficiency to teach in both Hindi and English medium, compulsory residence on the Vidyalaya campus, posting anywhere in India and no entertaining of change-of-station requests.

Common questions

How many NVS PGT English vacancies are there?

Notification 01/2025 sanctions 146 NVS Post Graduate Teacher (English) posts: 62 unreserved, 14 EWS, 39 OBC, 21 SC and 10 ST, with six reserved for persons with benchmark disabilities. That is the second largest humanities pool at NVS after Economics at 148, out of an NVS PGT total of 1,531. Corrigendum-3 of 10 December 2025 revised various vacancy tables but amended only Physical Education among NVS PGT subjects, leaving the English figure unchanged.

Does being an English postgraduate help in the NVS PGT Tier-1 exam?

Much less than candidates expect. Tier-1 is 300 marks, of which English language competency is only 30, delivered as ten questions. Another ten questions worth 30 marks test a Modern Indian Language, not English. The remaining 240 marks are General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge at 60 marks each. With one mark deducted from every three-mark question answered wrongly, a small advantage in the language part is easily erased elsewhere, so numeracy and computer literacy deserve the greater share of preparation time. Concretely, ten Part V questions cannot offset the twenty questions each in reasoning, numeric ability, computer literacy and general knowledge that make up the other 240 marks of the screening test.

What is in the NVS PGT English Tier-2 syllabus?

The official Tier-II syllabus published on 13 November 2025 begins with Section A, Reading Comprehension, using three or four unseen passages from prose, poetry, drama, articles, editorials and scientific and literary extracts, tested on comprehension, inference, vocabulary, tone, rhetorical devices and logical sequencing. Has the NVS PGT English Tier-2 result been declared?

Yes. India TV reported on 4 September 2026 that Tier-2 results had been released for PGT English among other posts including PGT Physical Education, TGT Music, TGT Physical Education, PRT Music and PRT Special Education. Results are accessed on examinationservices.nic.in using application number and date of birth. PGT English fell within the phased declaration that ran from 17 August to 14 September 2026. Candidates shortlisted at the 1:3 ratio receive interview schedules and call letters through their candidate logins.

Is NVS PGT English the same as a regional language teacher post?

No. The NVS vacancy tables list English among the mainstream PGT subjects at 146 posts, in the same block as Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Economics. The separate Modern Indian Language PGT block is far smaller, totalling 18 posts across Assamese, Bangla, Manipuri, Garo, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. An English applicant competes in a large mainstream pool. Appointees must in any case have proficiency to teach in both Hindi and English medium, as the notification requires for PGT posts.

What are the working conditions for an NVS PGT English teacher?

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are rural, fully residential schools, and the notification states that teachers are required to stay on the Vidyalaya campus. Initial posting may be anywhere in India and requests for a change of station or region will not be entertained under any circumstances. The post is Level-8 in the pay matrix, Rs.47,600 to 151,100, with an upper age limit of 40 and eligibility of a master's degree in the subject with at least 50 per cent plus a B.Ed. with 50 per cent. A candidate may apply to both NVS and KVS in the same cycle.
