Tier-1 includes a 20-question, 60-mark Basic Computer Literacy section, but that is general digital literacy and is not the subject paper. All 100 marks of subject assessment sit in Tier-2.

Dates and windows

Apart from the 17 August result, this calendar is common to every subject in Recruitment Notification 01/2025 and to both KVS and NVS. Computer Science was placed first in the result sequence, so its candidates have been waiting on the interview stage longest. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

Most NVS PGT Computer Science candidates come from an MCA, M.Tech or M.Sc IT background and prepare the way they prepared for placement tests: C or C plus plus, data structures, operating system internals, algorithm complexity. The published Tier-2 syllabus contains none of that. It is the school computer science course, and its programming content is Python and MySQL only. The gap between what an engineering postgraduate knows and what this paper asks is the single largest source of avoidable loss.

Python, and only Python, is the language

The syllabus specifies Python tokens and literals, mutability, operators including identity and membership, type conversion, conditional and iterative flow with range, break, continue and nested loops, and then goes function by function: for strings it names capitalize, title, count, find, index, endswith, isalnum, lstrip, partition, split and join; for lists append, extend, insert, remove, pop, reverse, sort and sorted; for tuples and dictionaries a comparable list including fromkeys, setdefault and popitem; and the math, random and statistics modules down to fabs, randrange and mode. Objective questions at that grain test whether you know what a named method returns, not whether you can design a program. Reading the method lists and predicting outputs is the efficient drill.

Files, SQL and pandas are the middle third

File handling appears twice over: text files with the r, r plus, w, w plus, a and a plus modes, write and writelines, read, readline and readlines, seek and tell and the with clause; binary files with pickle dump and load and search, append and update operations; and CSV with csv.reader and csv.writerow. The database block covers the relational model with degree and cardinality and the four key types, then DDL and DML, constraints, where, between, like, order by, is null, aggregate functions, group by with having, and cartesian, equi and natural joins, plus the SQL math, text and date functions. Python-MySQL connectivity with cursor, fetchone, fetchall and rowcount is named explicitly, as are pandas Series and DataFrames and matplotlib line, bar and histogram plots.

Nearly a quarter of the syllabus is non-technical

Two blocks carry material that engineering candidates routinely skip. Societal impacts covers digital footprints, net and communication etiquette, intellectual property rights with copyright, patent and trademark, plagiarism and infringement, open source licensing including Creative Commons, GPL and Apache, cybercrime from phishing to ransomware, cyber safety and trolling, malware types, e-waste management, the Indian IT Act, and gender and disability issues in computing. The emerging trends block names artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, augmented and virtual reality, robotics, big data, IoT, sensors, smart cities, cloud computing with SaaS, IaaS and PaaS, grid computing and blockchain. These are definitional, high-yield and quick to revise.

What the 17 August result now means

Computer Science led the twelve result phases, declared on 17 August 2026. For a post carrying an interview the result shows shortlisting status rather than a marksheet; marks follow within 15 days of the final result once interviews are complete. With 135 NVS posts, the 1:3 rule puts roughly 405 candidates into the interview round, which carries 100 marks and 15 per cent of merit. The 85 per cent from Tier-2 is already fixed, so the remaining preparation is entirely about the interview, and specifically about teaching this syllabus to school students rather than about professional software work.

A Navodaya computer lab is not a KVS one

The interview is for a fully residential school, usually rural. The notification says teachers reside on campus with rent-free accommodation as available and carry house mastership, remedial and supervisory study and co-curricular duties, and that appraisal covers the residential system alongside teaching ability. For this subject that shapes the likely questions: managing lab and internet access for resident students outside school hours, teaching the IT Act and cyber safety content to boarders who have their first sustained internet exposure on campus, running a coding or robotics club, and teaching Python to students whose earlier schooling had no computer subject at all. Initial posting is anywhere in India and change-of-station requests are not entertained.

When was the NVS PGT Computer Science Tier-2 result declared?

On 17 August 2026, in the first of twelve result phases, together with TGT Computer Science, Finance Officer and Stenographer Grade-I. Candidates log in at the recruitment portal to view and download a Tier-II result status. For PGT and TGT Computer Science and Finance Officer, shortlisted candidates proceed to interview and call letters appear in the application login once scheduling is finalised; Stenographer Grade-I instead goes to a skill test. How many NVS PGT Computer Science vacancies are there?

One hundred and thirty-five on the NVS side of the vacancy table in Recruitment Notification 01/2025: 56 unreserved, 13 EWS, 36 OBC-NCL, 20 SC and 10 ST, with six posts reserved horizontally for candidates with benchmark disabilities. That ranks sixth among the twelve NVS PGT subjects, behind Physics 186, Mathematics 167, Biology 161, Economics 148 and English 146, and ahead of Hindi 127 and Chemistry 121. KVS posts for the subject are counted in a separate column of the same table.

Which programming language is in the NVS PGT Computer Science syllabus?

Python, and nothing else. The published Tier-2 syllabus names Python tokens, data types, operators, control flow, strings, lists, tuples, dictionaries, user-defined functions, scope, text, binary and CSV file handling, the math, random and statistics modules, and pandas with matplotlib for data handling. The database side is MySQL, including Python-MySQL connectivity with cursor, fetchone, fetchall and rowcount. There is no C, C plus plus or Java content, and no data structures, algorithm analysis or operating system internals of the kind found in engineering entrance papers.

What qualification is needed for NVS PGT Computer Science?

An M.Sc in Computer Science or IT, or an MCA, or an M.E. or M.Tech in Computer Science or IT, each from a recognised institution or university with at least 50 per cent marks, together with a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution with 50 per cent or a three-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed with 50 per cent. Proficiency to teach in both Hindi and English medium is required. The maximum age is 40 years, with the usual relaxations of five years for SC and ST, three years for OBC-NCL and ten years for women applying to teaching posts.

Does Tier-1 test computer science for this post?

No. Tier-1 contains a Basic Computer Literacy section of 20 questions worth 60 marks, but it sits alongside General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, General Knowledge, English and a Modern Indian Language in a 100-question, 300-mark paper, and it tests general digital literacy rather than the subject. Tier-1 also carries harsher negative marking, a full mark per wrong answer, and is used only to screen candidates at ten times the vacancies. It contributes nothing to the final merit, which comes from Tier-2 and the interview.

Should I choose NVS or KVS for PGT Computer Science?

The paper, the syllabus and the timetable were identical, and the notification says a candidate applying for similar posts in both organisations pays the fee for a single post, so both could be pursued from one application. The difference is the posting. A Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is a fully residential school in a largely rural location; the teacher lives on campus, takes house mastership and supervisory study duties, and is appraised on the residential system, with initial posting anywhere in India and change-of-station requests not entertained. Kendriya Vidyalayas are day schools with different posting and transfer arrangements.
