NVS PGT Biology at a glance

Tier-1 carries no Biology at all. It is a 100-question, 300-mark general paper in six parts and exists only to reduce the field. Everything that decides a Biology candidate's rank is in the Tier-2 paper and the interview.

Dates and windows

This calendar is common to every subject in Recruitment Notification 01/2025 and to both KVS and NVS; only the result phase and the interview scheduling differ by post. Biology candidates should not expect a separate exam-day or application timetable. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

The commonest mistake in NVS PGT Biology is preparing at the level of the qualifying degree. Entry requires a Master's in Biological Science or Life Science, so candidates arrive with specialist training in molecular biology, taxonomy or biotechnology and revise at that depth. The published Tier-2 syllabus is 31 senior-secondary units. Nothing above that level is examinable, and the marks are lost on school-level breadth, not on research-level depth.

Botany and zoology are weighted alike

Of the 31 units, roughly half are plant-side: Plant Kingdom, Morphology and Anatomy of Flowering Plants, Photosynthesis in Higher Plants, Respiration in Plants, Plant Growth and Development, Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants. The other half are animal and human: Structural Organisation in Animals, Breathing and Exchange of Gases, Body Fluids and Circulation, Excretory Products, Locomotion and Movement, Neural and Chemical Coordination, Human Reproduction and Reproductive Health. An M.Sc Zoology holder who skips plant anatomy and plant physiology forfeits a comparable share of the paper to an M.Sc Botany holder who skips human systems. Neither side can be treated as revision-by-glance, because the objective questions test recall of structures, pathways and named examples rather than conceptual reasoning.

Forty of the hundred marks are written answers

Ten descriptive questions carry 40 marks against 60 objective questions carrying 60. That ratio rewards a different skill from the multiple-choice practice most Biology aspirants do. A descriptive answer in this subject usually means a labelled diagram plus a sequenced explanation: the light and dark reactions, the nitrogen cycle, the cardiac cycle, Mendelian dihybrid ratios, the steps of recombinant DNA technology. Writing these under time pressure, in the two and a half hours shared with the objective section, is what separates candidates who know the content from those who can deliver it. There is no negative marking on the descriptive part, so leaving one blank is a straightforward loss of four marks.

What 161 posts do to the shortlist arithmetic

Tier-1 shortlists at 1:10, which puts roughly 1,610 Biology candidates into the Tier-2 paper, and Tier-2 shortlists at 1:3, which puts roughly 483 into the interview. Biology sits third among the twelve NVS PGT subjects, above Chemistry at 121 and Computer Science at 135 but below Physics at 186. The larger post count widens the shortlist, but it also widens the applicant pool, because the eligibility clause admits any specialisation in Biological Science or Life Science: Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Life Science postgraduates all compete for the same 161 posts. CBSE has published no category-wise qualifying marks for either tier.

The interview tests the residential school, not the science

Fifteen per cent of the final merit comes from an interview conducted for a fully residential rural school. The notification says JNV teachers reside on campus, receive rent-free accommodation as available, and carry house mastership, remedial and supervisory study, and co-curricular duties. It also says performance is assessed on the residential system as well as teaching ability. A Biology candidate is therefore likely to be asked about laboratory safety with resident adolescents, running a kitchen garden or biodiversity club, and handling health and adolescence topics in a boarding environment. Answers that treat the post as a day-school teaching job read as unprepared.

One application can cover both bodies

The notification states that a candidate submits only one application for as many posts as they wish to apply for, and that a candidate applying for similar posts in both organisations pays the fee for a single post. So NVS PGT Biology and KVS PGT Biology were not separate applications or separate fees in this cycle, and the Tier-1 and Tier-2 papers were the same sitting. The choice is about the posting, not the exam: NVS means a rural residential campus with initial posting anywhere in India and requests for change of station not entertained, whereas KVS places teachers in day schools attached to central government stations.

Common questions

How many NVS PGT Biology vacancies are there in this recruitment?

One hundred and sixty-one, as listed in the NVS column of the vacancy table in CBSE Recruitment Notification 01/2025. The category split is 66 unreserved, 16 EWS, 43 OBC-NCL, 24 SC and 12 ST, with seven posts reserved horizontally for candidates with benchmark disabilities. That makes Biology the third largest PGT subject on the NVS side, behind Physics with 186 and Mathematics with 167, and ahead of Economics with 148. KVS vacancies for Biology are counted separately in the same table.

Is the NVS PGT Biology Tier-2 paper at post-graduate level?

No. The Tier-2 syllabus published by KVS on 13 November 2025 lists 31 units and all of them are senior-secondary: The Living World, Biological Classification, Cell Cycle and Cell Division, Photosynthesis in Higher Plants, Principles of Inheritance and Variation, Biotechnology and its Application, Ecosystem, Biodiversity and Conservation and so on. A Master's degree is the eligibility bar, not the examination standard. Preparation should be built on the senior-secondary course, with the Master's background used for confidence in the descriptive answers rather than for extra topics.

Can an M.Sc in Botany, Zoology or Biotechnology apply for NVS PGT Biology?

The notification's qualification for PGT Biology is a Master's in Biological Science or Life Science, or any specialisation in the concerned subject, with at least 50 per cent marks, together with a B.Ed carrying at least 50 per cent or a three-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed. On that wording the common life-science specialisations qualify. The maximum age is 40, with the standard relaxations of five years for SC and ST, three years for OBC-NCL and ten years for women applying to teaching posts. Candidates should check their own degree nomenclature against the notification text.

When is the NVS PGT Biology Tier-2 result?

CBSE is releasing Tier-2 results in twelve phases between 17 August and 14 September 2026, with phase dates reported as 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 26 and 28 August and 1 September onward. Press notes have named PGT Computer Science on 17 August, PGT Economics and History on 20 August, PGT Chemistry on 21 August, PGT Physics on 23 August and PGT Hindi on 5 September. Biology has not been separately named in the press notes seen here, so the candidate login at the recruitment portal is the reliable check.

How is the final NVS PGT Biology merit list calculated?

Tier-1 is a screening test only and its 300 marks do not carry into the merit. Candidates are shortlisted from Tier-1 at ten times the number of vacancies, sit the 100-mark Tier-2 Biology paper, and are shortlisted from it at three times the vacancies for interview. The interview carries 100 marks. Final merit is 85 per cent of the Tier-2 score plus 15 per cent of the interview score. The notification publishes no minimum qualifying percentage by category for either tier.

What is the difference between NVS PGT Biology and KVS PGT Biology?

The examination is identical, because both bodies recruit through the same Notification 01/2025, the same Tier-1 and Tier-2 papers and the same syllabus, and a single application with a single fee can cover similar posts in both. The job differs. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential, largely rural schools where teachers live on campus and take house mastership and supervisory study duties, and initial posting is anywhere in India with change-of-station requests not entertained. Kendriya Vidyalayas are day schools with their own posting and transfer arrangements.
