Updates as of September 22, 2026
FE Mechanical distributes its 110 questions across fourteen topic areas, and four of them are joint-heaviest at 10 to 15 questions each: Dynamics, Kinematics and Vibrations; Fluid Mechanics; Thermodynamics; and Mechanical Design and Analysis. Those four alone can account for up to 60 of the 110 questions, which is a markedly more concentrated profile than the electrical and computer paper.
NCEES FE Mechanical SpecsThe mechanics core sits just below that band. Statics carries 9 to 14 questions and Mechanics of Materials another 9 to 14, covering shear and moment diagrams, stress transformations, combined loading, buckling and statically indeterminate systems. Material Properties and Processing and Heat Transfer each carry 7 to 11 questions.
NCEES FE Mechanical SpecsTwo non-mechanical areas are examinable and routinely skipped. Electricity and Magnetism carries 5 to 8 questions covering electrical fundamentals, DC and AC circuit analysis and motors and generators, and Measurements, Instrumentation and Controls carries another 5 to 8 covering sensors, control systems, dynamic response and measurement uncertainty. Together they can be worth as much as Heat Transfer.
NCEES FE Mechanical SpecsThe fee payable to NCEES is USD 225. The exam is computer-based and offered year-round at NCEES-approved Pearson test centres, with registration and date selection through a MyNCEES account. NCEES states that once approved to test you have 12 months to sit the exam or forfeit the registration fee. Results are typically available within 7 to 10 days.
NCEESThe exam is closed book with an electronic reference. NCEES supplies the current version of the appropriate reference handbook on screen as a searchable PDF at 100 per cent on a 24-inch monitor, bars personal reference material from the testing room, and states in its exam guide that the Ctrl plus F search feature is not available for use; searching runs through a box on the left of the reference pane.
NCEES Exam GuideThere is no published percentage to hit. NCEES converts raw results to a scaled score that adjusts for minor differences in difficulty between exam forms, sets the standard through subject-matter experts using psychometric statistical methods, and states that it does not publish the passing score and applies no predetermined percentage of examinees who should pass or fail. Attempts are limited to one per testing window and three in any 12-month period.

What this means for your preparation
The characteristic FE Mechanical error is assuming the thermal and fluids half and the solid mechanics half can be traded against each other. They cannot, because both are large. Four areas sit at 10 to 15 questions and two more at 9 to 14, so the paper has six heavyweight blocks and a candidate strong in only one half is leaving roughly thirty questions on the table.
Six blocks carry the paper
Dynamics, Kinematics and Vibrations; Fluid Mechanics; Thermodynamics; and Mechanical Design and Analysis each carry 10 to 15 questions, and Statics and Mechanics of Materials each carry 9 to 14. At the upper end those six reach 88 of the 110 questions. Everything else, including Mathematics at 6 to 9 and Engineering Economics at 4 to 6, is comparatively marginal. Study plans that begin with a long mathematics refresher are mis-weighted for this discipline: mathematics here is roughly a third of the size it is on the electrical and computer specification. Start with the six, and give the smaller areas a single focused pass each.
Mechanical Design and Analysis is the applied differentiator
At 10 to 15 questions, Mechanical Design and Analysis is as large as thermodynamics and covers stress analysis of machine elements, failure theories, springs, pressure vessels, bearings, power transmission and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. It is the area least likely to map onto a single university course, since the content is usually spread across machine design, manufacturing and drawing subjects. Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in particular is often taught as a drafting convention rather than examinable engineering. Treat this area as a distinct syllabus rather than as revision of mechanics of materials, which is separately weighted at 9 to 14.
Do not write off the electrical and controls questions
Electricity and Magnetism carries 5 to 8 questions on electrical fundamentals, DC and AC circuit analysis and motors and generators, and Measurements, Instrumentation and Controls carries 5 to 8 on sensors, control systems, dynamic response and measurement uncertainty. Between them they reach up to 16 questions, more than Heat Transfer at its lower bound. Mechanical candidates commonly decide to sacrifice both because they feel out of discipline. The content required is introductory and the handbook supplies the relations, so a short deliberate block of study here recovers marks far more cheaply than squeezing further gains out of thermodynamics.
Units discipline and the electronic reference
The mechanical specification states that both SI and US Customary systems are used, and the exam is closed book with an electronic reference. NCEES supplies the current handbook as a searchable PDF at 100 per cent on a 24-inch monitor, prohibits personal reference material, and disables Ctrl plus F, requiring a search box on the left of the reference pane. For thermodynamics and heat transfer this combination bites hardest, because property tables and correlation forms must be located quickly and then read in the right unit system. Practise from the free downloadable handbook on one screen, and rehearse table lookups under time.
Pace, break and retake economics
The six-hour appointment contains 5 hours 20 minutes of exam time for 110 questions, a little under three minutes each, with a 25-minute scheduled break after roughly half. The timer does not stop for unscheduled breaks. Because NCEES scales scores, does not publish a cut score and applies no fixed pass rate, there is no threshold to coast to and no reason to leave an answer blank. If you fail, the diagnostic report by topic area is your only feedback, attempts are capped at three in any 12 months, and each retake costs the full USD 225.
Common questions
What topics carry the most questions on FE Mechanical?
Four areas tie for the largest weighting at 10 to 15 questions each: Dynamics, Kinematics and Vibrations; Fluid Mechanics; Thermodynamics; and Mechanical Design and Analysis. Statics and Mechanics of Materials follow closely at 9 to 14 each, then Material Properties and Processing and Heat Transfer at 7 to 11 each. The lighter areas are Mathematics at 6 to 9, Electricity and Magnetism and Measurements, Instrumentation and Controls at 5 to 8 each, and Probability and Statistics, Ethics and Professional Practice and Engineering Economics at 4 to 6 each.
How does FE Mechanical differ from FE Civil and FE Electrical?
Each discipline has its own specification with different areas and different question counts, although all three have 110 questions and the same appointment structure. FE Mechanical uses fourteen areas concentrated in six large blocks. FE Civil also uses fourteen areas but includes Surveying and Construction Engineering, which do not appear here, and combines Mathematics with Statistics. FE Electrical and Computer uses seventeen areas and gives Mathematics 11 to 17 questions against 6 to 9 here. Preparing from the wrong discipline's specification is a substantial mis-weighting.
What does the FE Mechanical exam cost and when can I take it?
The fee payable to NCEES is USD 225. The exam is computer-based and administered year-round at NCEES-approved Pearson test centres, so there is no fixed exam date; you register through a MyNCEES account and select from the dates available at your chosen centre. Once you are approved to test you have 12 months to sit the exam or you forfeit the registration fee. Results are usually available within 7 to 10 days and are reported as pass or fail.
Can I use my own formula sheet or handbook?
No. Personal reference material is prohibited in the testing room. The exam is closed book with an electronic reference: NCEES supplies the current version of the appropriate reference handbook on screen as a searchable PDF, rendered at 100 per cent on a 24-inch monitor. The exam guide states the Ctrl plus F search feature is not available, so you must use the search box on the left of the reference pane. You may bring one NCEES-approved calculator without its cover, and a TI-30XS is available on screen.
What score do I need to pass FE Mechanical?
NCEES does not publish one. Performance is converted to a scaled score that adjusts for minor differences in difficulty across exam forms, and the passing standard is set by subject-matter experts through psychometric statistical methods. NCEES states that it does not publish the passing score because it varies slightly based on difficulty, and that it scores each exam with no predetermined percentage of examinees who should pass or fail. Results are reported only as pass or fail; a numerical score is not released to passing candidates.
What happens on exam day at the test centre?
Check-in requires a current government-issued photo identification, an international passport in roman characters or a US military identification, showing an expiry date, your name and date of birth, a recognisable photograph and your signature, and the name must match your appointment confirmation exactly. Security includes palm vein scanning, a digital photograph, emptying pockets, rolling sleeves, a pat-down and a scan with infrared and metal detection wands. NCEES applies a zero-tolerance policy for unauthorised electronic devices.
