Updates as of September 22, 2026
FE Electrical and Computer is the widest of the FE specifications, splitting its 110 questions across seventeen topic areas rather than the fourteen used by the civil and mechanical papers. The breadth is the defining feature: it runs from Properties of Electrical Materials through Communications, Computer Networks and Software Engineering, so no single subject block dominates the paper.
NCEES FE Electrical SpecsTwo areas tie for the heaviest weighting at 11 to 17 questions each: Mathematics, covering algebra and trigonometry, complex numbers, discrete mathematics, analytic geometry, calculus, ordinary differential equations, linear algebra and vector analysis; and Circuit Analysis for DC and AC steady state, covering KCL and KVL, series and parallel circuits, Thevenin and Norton equivalents, node and loop analysis, waveforms, phasors and impedance.
NCEES FE Electrical SpecsThe computing half of the title is real and examinable. Digital Systems carries 8 to 12 questions, Computer Systems 5 to 8, Computer Networks 4 to 6 and Software Engineering 4 to 6, covering number systems, Boolean logic, logic minimisation, flip-flops and counters, state machines, timing, microprocessors, memory technology, interfacing, routing and switching, network models, intrusion detection, algorithms and data structures.
NCEES FE Electrical SpecsThe fee payable to NCEES is USD 225 and the exam is computer-based, administered year-round at NCEES-approved Pearson test centres with booking through a MyNCEES account. NCEES states that once you are approved to test you have 12 months to sit the exam or the registration fee is forfeited. Results are typically available within 7 to 10 days.
NCEESCandidates may not bring reference material. NCEES supplies the current version of the appropriate reference handbook on screen as a searchable PDF displayed at 100 per cent on a 24-inch monitor, personal references are prohibited in the testing room, and the exam guide states the Ctrl plus F search feature is not available, so retrieval runs through a dedicated search box on the left of the reference pane.
NCEES Exam GuideScoring is scaled, not percentage-based. NCEES converts performance to a scaled score that adjusts for minor differences in difficulty across exam forms, sets the standard through subject-matter experts using psychometric statistical methods, does not publish the passing score, and applies no predetermined percentage of examinees who should pass. Attempts are capped at one per testing window and three in any 12-month period.

What this means for your preparation
Electrical and computer candidates most often mis-plan this exam by preparing like specialists. Seventeen topic areas over 110 questions means the paper rewards a competent pass across everything and punishes depth in a favourite subject. A power engineer who ignores software engineering, or a computer engineering graduate who skips electromagnetics and machines, is discarding questions that are individually easy and collectively decisive.
Mathematics is a bigger block than any engineering subject
At 11 to 17 questions, Mathematics ties Circuit Analysis for the largest area, and it is broader here than in the mechanical specification. It spans algebra and trigonometry, complex numbers, discrete mathematics, analytic geometry, calculus, ordinary differential equations, linear algebra and vector analysis. Complex numbers and discrete mathematics are the two most often neglected, the first because it feels like a tool rather than a topic, the second because many electrical curricula place it outside the core. Treating mathematics as a subject in its own right, worth up to 17 questions, rather than as revision support, is the single largest weighting decision in a study plan.
Circuit analysis is where speed pays
Circuit Analysis for DC and AC steady state also runs to 11 to 17 questions, covering KCL and KVL, series and parallel circuits, Thevenin and Norton equivalents, node and loop analysis, waveform analysis, phasors and impedance. These are the most mechanical questions on the paper in the sense that a practised method reaches the answer without judgement. At roughly 2 minutes 55 seconds per question across the 5 hour 20 minute exam, banking time here is what funds the slower Control Systems and Communications questions later. Drill node and mesh analysis and phasor conversion until they are automatic rather than reasoned.
Do not abandon the computer half
Digital Systems at 8 to 12, Computer Systems at 5 to 8, Computer Networks at 4 to 6 and Software Engineering at 4 to 6 together reach as many as 32 questions, comparable with Mathematics and Circuit Analysis combined. The content is definitional and quickly revised: number systems, Boolean logic and minimisation, flip-flops and counters, programmable logic devices, state machines and timing; microprocessors, memory technology and interfacing; routing and switching, network topologies and models, intrusion detection and security; algorithms, data structures and software implementation. For a power-focused candidate this is the cheapest block of marks on the entire specification.
The handbook is a search interface, not a book
NCEES provides the current reference handbook on screen as a searchable PDF at 100 per cent on a 24-inch monitor, bars personal reference material from the testing room, and disables Ctrl plus F, requiring use of a search box on the left of the reference pane. For this discipline that matters more than most, because the handbook material you need is scattered across electronics, power, signals and digital sections rather than concentrated. Rehearse the search string for each recurring need, transformer relations, Laplace pairs, op-amp configurations, Bode asymptotes, so that retrieval takes seconds rather than a scroll.
Scaled scoring changes how you triage
Because NCEES scales scores and does not publish a cut score, there is no percentage target to aim at and no way to calculate that you have already passed partway through. The practical consequence is that every question is worth attempting: there is no negative marking mentioned and no predetermined proportion of candidates who must fail, so an educated guess on a Communications or Electromagnetics question costs nothing. Leave nothing blank, and use the diagnostic report issued after a failure, broken down by topic area, as the retake plan rather than repeating the whole seventeen-area sweep.
Common questions
How many topic areas does FE Electrical and Computer have?
Seventeen, which is more than any other FE discipline specification we checked; FE Civil and FE Mechanical each use fourteen. The 110 questions are distributed across them with published ranges. Mathematics and Circuit Analysis for DC and AC steady state are the largest at 11 to 17 questions each, Power Systems and Digital Systems follow at 8 to 12, and seven separate areas sit at just 4 to 6 questions. The structure is deliberately broad, spanning electrical, electronic, power, control, communications and computing content.
Is FE Electrical and Computer harder than FE Civil or FE Mechanical?
NCEES publishes no comparative difficulty statement, and because each exam is scaled independently against a standard set by subject-matter experts, cross-discipline comparison of raw difficulty is not meaningful. What is different is shape. Electrical and Computer spreads 110 questions over seventeen areas, so there are more subjects to cover and fewer questions in each. Civil and Mechanical concentrate more weight in a handful of large blocks. Choose the discipline that matches your degree and intended practice area, not one you believe is easier.
What is the FE exam fee and how do I book?
The fee payable to NCEES is USD 225. The exam is computer-based and administered year-round at NCEES-approved Pearson test centres. You register through a MyNCEES account and then select from the dates available at your chosen centre. Once approved to test, you have 12 months to sit the exam or you forfeit the registration fee. The fee is charged again in full for each attempt, and results are normally available within 7 to 10 days as a simple pass or fail.
What reference material can I use during the exam?
Only what NCEES gives you on screen. The current version of the appropriate reference handbook is supplied electronically as a searchable PDF, displayed at 100 per cent on a 24-inch monitor, and personal reference material is prohibited in the testing room. The exam guide states that the Ctrl plus F search feature is not available for use; searching is done through the box on the left of the reference pane. You may bring one NCEES-approved calculator, without its cover, and a TI-30XS is available on screen.
How long is the FE appointment and when is the break?
The appointment is six hours. It comprises two minutes for the nondisclosure agreement, an eight-minute tutorial, 5 hours 20 minutes of exam time and a 25-minute scheduled break. The exam is divided into two sections and the optional scheduled break is offered after roughly half the questions. The exam timer does not stop for unscheduled breaks, which may not involve leaving the building. Across 110 questions the exam time works out at a little under three minutes per question.
How many times can I sit FE Electrical and Computer in a year?
NCEES allows one attempt per testing window and no more than three attempts in any 12-month period, and notes that individual licensing boards may impose stricter restrictions. Each attempt requires the full USD 225 fee. Failing candidates receive a diagnostic report showing performance by topic area, which is the only feedback available: NCEES does not manually verify answers for computer-based exams and does not release questions or answers for review. Confirm your own state board's retake rules before planning repeat sittings.
