KVS is unusual among TGT recruitments in that the subject does not appear at all in the screening paper. Tier-1 is a common 100-question test of reasoning, numeric ability, computer literacy, general knowledge, English and a modern Indian language, taken by every applicant regardless of post, and it only decides who is shortlisted at a ratio of 1:10. The whole of a Mathematics candidate's subject marks sit in the 100-mark Tier-2 paper.

This calendar is common to every post in KVS Advertisement 01/2025 — Mathematics shares its notification, application window, Tier-1 date and Tier-2 date with Sanskrit, Science, Physical and Health Education and every other TGT, PGT and PRT subject. Only the Tier-2 question paper, the vacancy count and the eventual cut-off differ by subject. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.
What this means for your preparation
The commonest mistake in KVS TGT Mathematics is preparing the paper as though it were school mathematics. The published Tier-2 syllabus does start at the NCERT secondary level, but it also contains undergraduate linear algebra, single-variable calculus and classical inequalities. Candidates who revise only classes nine and ten meet those blocks cold, and in a 100-mark paper that decides 85 per cent of the final merit there is no room to absorb the loss.
Where the graduate-level content actually sits
Three parts of the Mathematics syllabus are clearly above school level and are the ones most often skipped. The first is matrices treated as linear algebra: vector spaces R, R squared and R cubed, linear independence, geometric transformations, eigenvalues, eigenvectors and reduction to diagonal form. The second is calculus as a block in its own right: sets and functions, polynomial, sine, cosine, exponential and logarithmic functions, limits, continuity, differentiation with chain, product and quotient rules, second-order derivatives and integration. The third is elementary inequalities, naming absolute value, Cauchy-Schwarz and Tchebychef. None of these can be picked up from a class ten textbook, and they align with the eligibility rule that Mathematics must have been a main or elective subject for at least three years or six semesters.
The school block is wide but predictable
The larger share of the syllabus is secondary mathematics stated in unusual detail, which makes it scoreable. It runs through number systems and representation of irrationals on the number line, laws of exponents with rational exponents, polynomials with the Remainder and Factor Theorems, pairs of linear equations by substitution and elimination, quadratic equations and the discriminant, arithmetic progressions, coordinate geometry with distance and section formulae, Euclid's five postulates, lines and angles, the SAS, ASA, SSS and RHS congruence criteria, similarity, quadrilaterals, circle and tangent theorems, Heron's formula, sectors and segments at 60, 90 and 120 degrees, surface areas and volumes, statistics, classical probability, trigonometric ratios at the standard angles and heights and distances. Treat this as guaranteed marks rather than as the whole paper.
Forty marks are written, not ticked
The Tier-2 paper is 70 questions for 100 marks in two and a half hours, and only 60 of those questions are objective. Ten descriptive questions carry 40 marks, which is more per question than anything else in the selection. A Mathematics candidate who has trained exclusively on multiple-choice practice tests is unprepared to set out a proof, justify a construction or carry a derivation through in writing under time pressure. Proof-style items suit this subject particularly well — congruence and circle theorems, the identity sin squared A plus cos squared A equals one, the relationship between the zeros and coefficients of a polynomial, eigenvalue computation. Practise writing full solutions with steps, not just arriving at the answer.
What the negative marking is really doing
The two tiers punish guessing very differently and that should change tactics between them. Tier-1 deducts a full mark for a wrong answer against three marks for a right one, a one-third penalty across 100 questions, so on the common screening paper an unfounded guess is expensive and a blank is often the better choice. Tier-2 deducts only 0.25 of a mark on the objective section where each correct answer is worth one, so the arithmetic favours attempting any question you can narrow to two plausible options. Mathematics candidates tend to carry Tier-1 caution into Tier-2 and leave solvable items blank; the penalty structure does not justify that.
Reading the cut-off history honestly
For the 2023 KVS cycle, CareerPower reports Tier-1 cut-offs for Mathematics of 141 for UR, 133 for OBC, 120 for SC and 111 for ST, on a paper of 180 marks. Those are the second highest of the subjects on this page, below Sanskrit at 141 UR marks against 142 and above Science at 130 and Physical and Health Education at 113. They are useful only as a relative signal: the 2026 Tier-1 paper is 300 marks, not 180, so the numbers do not transfer, and this is a coaching portal's compilation rather than a KVS publication. What survives the change of scale is the ordering — Mathematics shortlists at a demanding level.

Both, and that is the difficulty. The published Tier-2 syllabus covers secondary-school mathematics in detail — number systems, polynomials, coordinate geometry, congruence and circle theorems, mensuration, statistics, probability, trigonometry and heights and distances — and then adds undergraduate material: vector spaces R, R squared and R cubed, linear independence, eigenvalues, eigenvectors and diagonalisation, a full calculus block from limits through integration, and inequalities including Cauchy-Schwarz and Tchebychef. The eligibility rule requiring Mathematics for at least three years or six semesters of the degree is consistent with that level.
What degree subjects do I need for KVS TGT Mathematics?
The notification requires either a four-year integrated degree from an NCTE-recognised university with at least 50 per cent in the concerned subject and in aggregate including the B.Ed. component, or a Bachelor's degree plus B.Ed. with 50 per cent in each. The combination is prescribed: Mathematics as a main or elective subject for at least three years or six semesters, Physics for at least one year or two semesters, and one of Chemistry, Electronics, Computer Science or Statistics for one year or two semesters. CTET Paper-II is mandatory, as is competence to teach in English and Hindi.
Does the Tier-1 paper test Mathematics?
Not as a subject. Tier-1 is a common 100-question, 300-mark paper of two hours sat by all applicants, split into General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge at 20 questions each, and Language Competency in English and in a modern Indian language at 10 questions each. Numeric Ability is arithmetic aptitude, not the TGT Mathematics syllabus. Tier-1 is a screening test that shortlists at a ratio of 1:10 per category; subject knowledge is examined only in Tier-2.
How much does the interview count against my Tier-2 Mathematics marks?
The final merit is 85 per cent from Tier-2 and 15 per cent from the interview, which itself carries 100 marks. Candidates are shortlisted for interview at a ratio of 1:3 per category on the strength of the Tier-2 subject paper. In practice this means the 100-mark Mathematics paper of 29 March 2026 determines most of the outcome, and a strong interview can move a borderline candidate but will not rescue a weak subject score.
Has the KVS TGT Mathematics Tier-2 result been declared?
As of 22 September 2026 the results are being released subject by subject rather than all at once.
