KVS TGT English paper and post at a glance

The general-studies material that English aspirants often assume is part of their subject paper is not: reasoning, numeric ability, computer literacy and general knowledge all sit in Tier 1, which is qualifying only. Tier 2 is entirely English, and the descriptive block of 40 marks is the single largest concentration of marks in the recruitment that a candidate can control by practice rather than recall.

Dates and windows

This schedule is common to every subject under Notification 1/2025 rather than specific to English: one notification, one application window, one Tier 1 and one Tier 2 window cover all TGT subjects, the PGT posts and the non-teaching posts. Only the Tier 2 result was staggered by post, and TGT English fell in phase 9. The exam dates and the reported extension come from coaching and news portals, not a KVS document we could read. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

English graduates arrive expecting a literature paper and meet a language paper. The reported Tier 2 syllabus is built on grammar, usage, vocabulary and comprehension rather than periods, authors and critical theory, and it is explicitly pitched at graduation level even though its base is NCERT classes 6 to 10. Candidates who revise Chaucer and Eliot and skip determiners, modals and reported speech lose marks on the cheapest questions in the paper.

A usage paper set above its source level

Testbook's account of the English syllabus lists articles, modals, pronouns, verbs, prepositions and tenses, then narration, voice and punctuation, then idioms, synonyms, antonyms and word power, and finally reading comprehension. The note attached to it matters more than the list: the content base is NCERT classes 6 to 10 but the questions are set at graduation level. In practice that means school-syllabus categories tested through undergraduate-level discrimination, where two options are both grammatical and only one is idiomatic. Preparation that stops at rule recall will not separate those. Working through error-spotting and sentence-improvement sets under time, and then checking why the distractor was wrong, is the drill this paper rewards.

Forty descriptive marks are the real differentiator

Tier 2 is 100 marks: 60 objective questions worth one mark each with a 0.25 deduction, and 10 descriptive questions worth 40 marks with no deduction, in two and a half hours. For English candidates the descriptive block is both the easiest to underestimate and the most controllable. Sixty objective questions on grammar and vocabulary compress a large cohort into a narrow band, because most serious candidates will get most of them right. The written answers spread that band out. Practise ten answers against the clock before the exam, because the discovery that four hundred words take longer than expected is one that should not be made in the hall.

Where the English cut-off sits in the family

Career Power's figures for the previous cycle put TGT English at 129 out of 180 for unreserved, 120 for OBC non-creamy-layer, 114 for SC and 106 for ST. TGT Hindi that year was substantially higher at 141, 134, 132 and 124, and TGT Art Education sat in between at 132, 126, 124 and 107. The reading is not that English is easier but that its post count is larger: 314 notified posts against 13 for Hindi means a much wider interview shortlist at the 1:3 ratio, which pulls the qualifying mark down. These figures are unofficial and rest on an older 180-mark structure, so treat them as relative position rather than a target.

Eligibility turns on the subject percentage

The notification asks for a Bachelor or Honours degree with at least 50 per cent both in the concerned subject and in the aggregate, plus a B.Ed at 50 per cent, or one of the integrated routes, and it requires CTET Paper II and competency to teach through both English and Hindi medium, with an age ceiling of 35. For English graduates two clauses cause most rejections. The first is the subject percentage: a strong aggregate does not rescue English marks below 50. The second is the Hindi-medium competency requirement, which applies to English teachers in Kendriya Vidyalayas as much as to anyone else and is not waived by the subject.

What to do now that the cycle has closed

As of 22 September 2026 nothing is open. Registration under Notification 1/2025 closed in December 2025, Tier 2 was held from 27 to 31 March 2026, and the English result came out on 1 September 2026. For a shortlisted candidate the remaining work is the interview, 100 marks carrying 15 per cent of the merit against 85 per cent for Tier 2, so it changes outcomes only at the margins but can decide a close place. For everyone else the useful step is the eligibility one: CTET Paper II is a separate CBSE examination on its own calendar and must already be in hand when a KVS window opens, because these windows run for about three weeks.

How many KVS TGT English vacancies were notified in 2025?

Recruitment Notification No. 1/2025 lists 314 TGT English posts: 129 unreserved, 31 EWS, 84 OBC non-creamy-layer, 47 SC and 23 ST, plus a small number of slots reserved for candidates with disabilities. That makes English the fifth largest TGT stream in the notification, behind Sanskrit at 529, Special Educator at 493, Mathematics at 413 and Social Studies at 327. Coaching portals later reported a revised English figure of 359, which we could not verify in a KVS document.

Is the KVS TGT English paper based on literature?

The 180-mark figures belong to an older single-paper structure and are not directly comparable with the current Tier 2, which is 100 marks split 60 objective and 40 descriptive.

Do I need CTET for KVS TGT English?

Yes. The essential qualifications in Notification 1/2025 require a pass in the Central Teachers Eligibility Test Paper-II conducted by CBSE for the TGT posts, including the language subjects, alongside a Bachelor or Honours degree at 50 per cent in English and in the aggregate and a B.Ed at 50 per cent. The notification also requires competency to teach through both English and Hindi medium. CTET is run separately by CBSE on its own calendar, so it must be cleared before a KVS window opens.

No. Registration under Notification 1/2025 opened on 14 November 2025 and closed on 4 December 2025, reported as extended to 11 December 2025. Tier 1 was held on 10 and 11 January 2026 and Tier 2 from 27 to 31 March 2026, with the English result out on 1 September 2026. Only the interview stage remains for shortlisted candidates. KVS recruitment has been infrequent in recent years and no further TGT English notification has been announced.
