Updates as of September 22, 2026
Recruitment Notification 01/2025 advertised 134 Principal posts in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and 93 in Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, plus 58 Vice-Principal posts, the Vice-Principal cadre existing in KVS only. Coaching portals later reported revised figures of 161 Principal and 69 Vice-Principal vacancies after the overall KVS count rose from 9,126 to 9,921.
KVS/NVS Notification 01/2025Neither post is open to a candidate straight from the classroom without qualifying service. Principal requires three years as a Principal in Pay Level-12, or three years as a KVS Vice-Principal in Level-10, or twelve years of regular service as a PGT or Lecturer in Level-8. Vice-Principal requires service as a Vice-Principal in Level-10 or at least six years as a PGT or Lecturer in Level-8.
KVS/NVS Notification 01/2025No application window is open on 22 September 2026. Registration ran from 14 November to 4 December 2025 and was extended to 11 December 2025 by a CBSE public notice that also aligned the Principal qualification between KVS and NVS and allowed candidates to apply to both organisations, previously an either-or choice.
CBSE Public Notice, 4 December 2025The cycle is at its interview stage. CBSE released Tier-2 results in phases from 17 August 2026. The Principal Tier-2 result was not part of the numbered phase sequence: the 11th-phase press note of 5 September 2026 records that it had already been declared on 3 September 2026. Tier-3 interview call letters began issuing on 7 September 2026, and results are accessed through examinationservices.nic.in.
Prepp (coaching portal)The notification we read sets no separate departmental or promotion quota for Principal or Vice-Principal. The restriction operates entirely through the service and pay-level conditions in the essential qualifications, which in practice confine the field to serving PGTs, Vice-Principals and Principals in government and autonomous organisations rather than reserving a share of posts.
KVS/NVS Notification 01/2025KVS advertises these posts rarely. The drive before 01/2025 was issued in December 2022 and covered Principal, PGT, TGT and Librarian vacancies, with applications closing on 2 January 2023 after an extension, roughly three years earlier. A serving PGT who misses one cycle may wait years for the next.

Principal and Vice-Principal applicants sat the same Tier-1 paper on the same two days as PGT, TGT and PRT candidates; the calendar is common to the whole of Notification 01/2025. Dates after Tier-1 are reported by coaching portals citing CBSE rather than taken from a notice we could read on the KVS site. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.
What this means for your preparation
This is not a teaching recruitment with a harder paper. It is a promotion-grade selection where the service condition decides who may apply at all, and where a master's degree and a B.Ed. on their own qualify nobody. The commonest wasted application comes from a PGT with the right degrees but fewer than six years in Pay Level-8, who is ineligible for Vice-Principal and twice removed from Principal.
Service in a pay level, not years in a classroom
Every route into these posts is defined by a pay level as well as a duration. Vice-Principal needs either current service as a Vice-Principal in Level-10 or at least six years as a PGT or Lecturer in Level-8. Principal needs three years as a Principal in Level-12, or three years as a KVS Vice-Principal in Level-10, or twelve years of regular service as a PGT or Lecturer in Level-8. Contractual teaching, guest engagement and service in a lower level do not count toward those periods, and the condition is assessed as at the closing date of the application. Anyone planning an application in a future cycle should confirm the pay level recorded in their service book, not merely the years elapsed.
The age band has a floor as well as a ceiling
Unusually for Indian teaching recruitment, both posts carry a minimum age: 35 years for Principal and for Vice-Principal, with maxima of 50 and 45 respectively. Read against the service requirement, the two conditions interlock. A PGT who entered Level-8 service at 28 reaches the six-year Vice-Principal threshold at 34, a year before becoming age-eligible, and the twelve-year Principal threshold at 40, inside the band. The narrow band matters most for the Vice-Principal post, where only a ten-year window exists between the floor and the ceiling. Category relaxations apply on the upper limit in the usual way, but the floor is not relaxed by the notification we read.
Two tiers, then an interview weighted at fifteen per cent
The scheme of examination is the same architecture applied across the notification. Tier-1 is a two-hour qualifying OMR paper of 100 questions for 300 marks across general reasoning, numeric ability, basic computer literacy, general knowledge and language competency in English and one modern Indian language, with one mark deducted for a wrong answer and shortlisting at 1:10 against vacancies. Tier-2 runs two and a half hours for 100 marks, 60 objective questions of one mark each with 0.25 deducted for error and ten descriptive questions for 40 marks. Interview shortlisting is 1:3 from Tier-2, and the final merit for Principal and Vice-Principal is 85 per cent Tier-2 and 15 per cent interview.
No reserved departmental share, only a filtered field
It is often assumed that a fixed proportion of Principal posts is set aside for departmental promotion. The notification we read does not state any such quota for Principal or Vice-Principal. The effect is achieved differently: because every eligibility route requires qualifying service in a specified pay level in a Central or State government or autonomous organisation, the applicant pool consists almost entirely of serving Vice-Principals, Principals and senior PGTs. A serving KVS Vice-Principal with three years in Level-10 competes in the open merit list rather than against a separate departmental list, which is a materially different proposition from a promotion examination with reserved slots.
What the older Principal cut-off suggests
The Principal cut-off in circulation from an earlier cycle is 203 for unreserved candidates, with 189 for OBC, 187 for SC and 178 for ST; portals differ on whether it belongs to 2023 or to 2018-19, and it was set under the older pattern in which the written test carried 70 per cent of merit and the interview 30. It is therefore not comparable to a Tier-2 paper marked out of 100 with 85 per cent weighting. What survives from it is the spread: the gap between the unreserved and ST figures was about 25 marks, narrower than in most teaching posts, which is what a small, uniformly experienced field tends to produce.
Common questions
What is the minimum experience required to apply for KVS Principal?
Recruitment Notification 01/2025 gives alternative routes. A candidate may be working as a Principal in Pay Level-12 for at least three years in a Central or State government or autonomous organisation, or, for KVS, serving as a Vice-Principal for three years in Pay Level-10, or have twelve years of regular service as a PGT or Lecturer in Pay Level-8. For NVS there is a further route for a Vice-Principal or Assistant Education Officer in Level-10 with nine years of combined PGT and Vice-Principal service including at least three as Vice-Principal. A master's degree and B.Ed., both with at least 50 per cent marks, are required in every case.
Can a PGT apply directly for KVS Vice-Principal?
Yes, but only after qualifying service. The notification allows a candidate working as a PGT or Lecturer in Pay Level-8 to apply for Vice-Principal after at least six years in that level, alongside the alternative route of already serving as a Vice-Principal in Pay Level-10. The candidate must also hold a master's degree with at least 50 per cent marks and a B.Ed. or equivalent integrated degree with at least 50 per cent marks, know computer applications, and have working knowledge of Hindi and English. The age band for Vice-Principal is 35 to 45 years.
How many KVS Principal and Vice-Principal vacancies were notified?
Notification 01/2025 lists 134 Principal posts for Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and 93 for Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, and 58 Vice-Principal posts, the Vice-Principal cadre being a KVS post only. Coaching portals subsequently reported revised figures of 161 Principal and 69 Vice-Principal vacancies as part of the wider revision that lifted the KVS total from 9,126 to 9,921. The notification figures are the ones we read directly; the revised numbers should be checked against any corrigendum published on the KVS recruitment page.
Is there a departmental quota in the KVS Principal recruitment?
The notification we read does not set out a departmental or promotion quota for either Principal or Vice-Principal. Restriction to serving officers is achieved through the essential qualifications themselves, which require qualifying service in a specified pay level, so the field is composed of serving Principals, Vice-Principals and senior PGTs competing in a single merit list. Candidates who have seen references to a departmental share should verify the point in the recruitment rules published under the administration section of the KVS website before relying on it.
What is the exam pattern for KVS Principal and Vice-Principal?
The same two-tier scheme as the teaching posts. Tier-1 is a qualifying OMR paper of 100 questions for 300 marks in two hours covering general reasoning, numeric ability, basic computer literacy, general knowledge and language competency in English and a modern Indian language, with one mark deducted for each wrong answer. Tier-2 lasts two and a half hours for 100 marks, comprising 60 one-mark objective questions with 0.25 deducted per error and ten descriptive questions worth 40 marks. Shortlisting is 1:10 for Tier-2 and 1:3 for interview, and final merit is 85 per cent Tier-2 with 15 per cent interview.
When will KVS advertise Principal and Vice-Principal posts again?
No date has been announced. Applications for Notification 01/2025 closed on 11 December 2025 and that cycle reached its interview stage in September 2026. The previous drive covering Principal posts was advertised in December 2022 with a deadline extended to 2 January 2023, roughly three years before. On that record a serving PGT should treat the opening as unscheduled, keep the service entry in Pay Level-8 documented and watch the recruitment page on kvsangathan.nic.in rather than expect an annual notification.
