The PGT English paper at a glance

Tier-1 runs two hours with one mark deducted for each wrong answer out of three; Tier-2 runs two and a half hours with 0.25 deducted on the objective half only. Nothing in Tier-1 is drawn from the English syllabus, and Tier-1 marks do not enter the merit list: the notification computes merit from Tier-2 and interview at 85 and 15 per cent. PGT English is placed in Level-8 of the pay matrix, Rs 47,600 to Rs 1,51,100.

Dates and windows

This calendar is common to every post and every subject in Recruitment Notification 01/2025: one notification, one application window, one Tier-1 and one Tier-2 sitting for PGT, TGT, PRT and the non-teaching posts alike. Only the Tier-2 result date is subject-specific, because CBSE released results in twelve phases between 17 August and 14 September 2026 and PGT English fell in the tenth. The 10 and 11 January Tier-1 dates are as reported by Career Power; the remaining dates come from CBSE and KVS notices. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

PGT English candidates routinely assume that being an English specialist gives them a head start in the screening test. It does not. Of the 300 marks in Tier-1, exactly 30 touch English at all, and those 30 are a language-competency block pitched well below post-graduate level. The subject knowledge that the post is actually about appears only in Tier-2, and Tier-2 is where the whole merit list is built.

Tier-1 gives English no advantage

Parts I to IV of Tier-1 are General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge, twenty questions and sixty marks each, 240 marks in total with no English content whatsoever. Part V is Language Competency in English at ten questions and thirty marks, and Part VI the same in a Modern Indian Language of the candidate's choosing. An English post-graduate therefore contests 240 of 300 marks on ground unrelated to the subject, with one mark deducted per wrong answer. The screening ratio is one in ten against notified vacancies, which for 164 KVS English posts is a wide net, but Numeric Ability and Computer Literacy are the two parts that eliminate humanities candidates and they deserve real preparation time rather than a week of revision.

What the English Tier-2 syllabus actually spans

The Tier-2 English syllabus circulating for this cycle is built in four sections. Section A is unseen comprehension across prose, poetry, drama, editorials and scientific extracts, testing inference, tone and rhetorical devices. Section B is writing ability, split into functional writing, which is letters, reports, notices, circulars and press releases, and creative or analytical writing, which is essays, articles, debates and speeches. Section C is grammar and usage, including editing and proofreading. Only Section D is literature, and it is deliberately broad: British from the Elizabethans to Orwell, American from Dickinson and Frost to Miller and Hemingway, Indian Writing in English from Narayan and Anand to Roy and Ghosh, world literature including Marquez, Achebe and Neruda, and a strand on literary criticism and movements from classicism to postcolonialism and structuralism.

Forty of the hundred marks are written

The Tier-2 paper is 60 objective questions worth one mark each and 10 descriptive questions worth four marks each. That descriptive block is 40 per cent of the paper and, once the 85 per cent weighting is applied, roughly a third of the final merit position. English is one of the few subjects where the descriptive section overlaps directly with the syllabus itself, because Section B is about writing. Candidates who have prepared literature notes but have not written a timed argumentative essay, a formal report or a press release since their own post-graduation lose marks that objective revision cannot recover. Practise the functional formats to a clock, since the whole paper allows two and a half hours for seventy questions.

The over-prepared British canon

The predictable failure pattern in PGT English is a candidate who knows Shakespeare, the Romantics and the Victorians thoroughly and has read almost nothing in the other three literature strands. On a 60-question objective paper drawn across five literature areas plus comprehension, grammar and writing, deep British coverage buys a limited number of questions while American literature, Indian Writing in English, world literature and critical terminology are each capable of contributing several. Reading two or three primary texts in each neglected strand, plus a short glossary of critical movements, moves more marks per hour of study than a further pass over Hamlet. The paper is set at post-graduation level, so recall of period, author and movement matters more than close textual detail.

No official English cut-off exists

CBSE has published neither a subject-wise Tier-2 cut-off nor category-wise qualifying marks for PGT English. For posts that carry an interview, the phase-ten notice says the result shows shortlisting status only and that marksheets will be issued within fifteen days of the final result, so even successful candidates do not yet hold their Tier-2 score. Expected cut-off tables on coaching sites should be read with care: one widely circulated table quotes PGT ranges out of 150 marks, which does not correspond to the notified 100-mark Tier-2 structure. Until CBSE releases marksheets and the final merit list, any English-specific cut-off figure in circulation is an estimate and not a published number.

Common questions

Is the KVS PGT English result out?

Yes. CBSE declared the Tier-2 result for PGT English on 3 September 2026 in the tenth phase of its result release, alongside PGT Physical Education, TGT Music, TGT Physical Education and two Primary Teacher categories. Results are viewed through the application portal login. Because the post carries an interview, the declaration indicates shortlisting status rather than marks; CBSE states that marksheets will be made available within fifteen days of the final result, after the interview process is complete.

How many KVS PGT English vacancies are there in 2026?

Recruitment Notification 01/2025 lists 164 PGT English posts in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, made up of 68 unreserved, 16 EWS, 44 OBC (NCL), 24 SC and 12 ST, plus two LD, two VI, three HI and four other PwBD reservations. A separate Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti table in the same notification carries 146 PGT English posts. KVS PGT posts across all twelve subjects total 1,465, so English is the single largest subject after Physics and Chemistry.

Does the Tier-1 English section help a PGT English candidate?

Only marginally. Tier-1 runs to 100 questions and 300 marks, of which Language Competency in English is ten questions and thirty marks, with a further ten questions and thirty marks in a Modern Indian Language the candidate selects. The remaining 240 marks are General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge. Tier-1 is a screening test that shortlists candidates in a one-to-ten ratio against notified vacancies, and its marks do not enter the final merit list at all.

What is in the KVS PGT English Tier-2 syllabus?

Four sections. Is the PGT English Tier-2 paper only in English?

The notification's general rule is that Tier-2 for all posts is bilingual, in Hindi and English medium, and the exception it writes out covers PGT (Modern Indian Language) and TGT (3rd Language) posts, where the test is in the language concerned. PGT English is listed in the KVS vacancy table as a mainstream subject alongside Physics and History rather than among the regional-language posts, and CBSE declared its result separately from the Assamese, Bangla, Manipuri, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu group.

How is the final KVS PGT English merit list calculated?

The notification states the merit list is prepared by giving 85 per cent weightage to Tier-2 and 15 per cent to the interview. Tier-2 is 100 marks, 60 objective questions of one mark with 0.25 deducted for a wrong answer and 10 descriptive questions of four marks, in two and a half hours. The interview is 100 marks and is held only for shortlisted candidates. Tier-1 marks are used to screen candidates into Tier-2 and contribute nothing to the final ranking.
