Updates as of September 22, 2026
Recruitment Notification No. 01/2025, issued by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan on 13 November 2025, sanctions 129 KVS posts of Post Graduate Teacher (Economics). The same common notification carries 148 NVS PGT Economics posts, and Economics is one of only three subjects where the NVS pool exceeds the KVS pool. Notified KVS PGT posts total 1,465.
KVS Notification 01/2025 (PDF)The Tier-2 syllabus KVS published on 13 November 2025 opens the Economics section with three statistics units before any economics theory: Collection, Organisation and Presentation of Data, and Statistical Tools and Interpretation covering measures of central tendency, correlation and index numbers. Statistics is therefore examined as part of the Economics paper, not as an optional adjunct.
KVS Tier-2 Syllabus (PDF)The cycle is at interview stage. KVS published the format of bio-data for candidates shortlisted for interview under Notification 01/2025 on 21 August 2026, and Adda247 reports Tier-2 results released in thirteen phases, the most recent on 14 September 2026. A final merit list for PGT Economics had not been published at the time of writing.
KVS Interview Bio-data FormatEconomics has historically been the least competitive of the large PGT subjects on cut-off. CareerPower's archive puts the 2018-19 PGT Economics written cut-off at 87 for UR, against 97 for Chemistry, 100 for Commerce and 103 for Computer Science in the same year. The 2023 Economics UR figure is 134, level with Chemistry and below Commerce and Computer Science.
CareerPower (coaching site)No new KVS PGT Economics notification has been announced for 2026-27. Coaching trackers report a revision of the KVS PGT total to 1,606, with Economics quoted at 139 by both Testbook and Adda247, but the revision does not appear in the notification PDF. KVS recruits teachers in occasional drives, not annually.
Testbook (coaching site)What the PGT Economics candidate actually sits
| Component | Questions | Marks | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier-1 Parts I-IV: Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy, General Knowledge | 80 | 240 | No economics content at all |
| Tier-1 Parts V-VI: English and a Modern Indian Language | 20 | 60 | Part V set in English only |
| Tier-2 objective, Economics | 60 | 60 | 0.25 mark deducted per wrong answer |
| Tier-2 descriptive, Economics | 10 | 40 | Written answers with diagrams, no negative marking |
| Interview | Not applicable | 100 | Counts 15 per cent; Tier-2 counts 85 per cent |
The published Economics syllabus divides into four blocks: statistics for economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics and Indian economic development. All four have to be answered inside one 2.5-hour, 100-mark Tier-2 paper, which means a candidate cannot trade a strong macro background against ignorance of index numbers or the post-1991 reform narrative. Tier-1, the 300-mark general screen, contains no economics and shortlists to Tier-2 at roughly 1:10 per category; Tier-2 shortlists to interview at about 1:3.

This is a single schedule shared by every post and every subject in Recruitment Notification 01/2025, so Economics candidates had no separate application window or exam date. Only the notification, the Tier-2 syllabus release and the interview bio-data format are confirmed on the KVS website; exam and result dates are taken from coaching trackers and labelled as reported. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.
What this means for your preparation
PGT Economics candidates arrive from master's programmes built on econometrics, advanced microeconomic theory and development economics, and then meet a Tier-2 paper whose published units are the school economics course: statistics for economics, elementary micro and macro, and Indian economic development. Preparing at the level of the degree rather than the level of the syllabus is the single commonest error, and it shows up most in the statistics block.
Statistics is examined, and it is examined first
The Economics syllabus KVS published begins with Introduction, then Collection, Organisation and Presentation of Data, then Statistical Tools and Interpretation. Those units cover sources and methods of data collection, frequency distributions, tabular and diagrammatic presentation, arithmetic mean, median and mode, dispersion, correlation, and index numbers including their use in measuring inflation. Postgraduate economists tend to skip this because it is arithmetically trivial next to regression analysis, which is exactly why they lose marks on it: the questions are about definitions, formulae, when a particular index or measure of central tendency is appropriate, and small numerical computations done quickly. Three of the fifteen listed units are statistics, so it is a material share of a 100-mark paper.
Micro and macro are theory at diagram level
The microeconomic units run Introduction to Microeconomics, Consumer's Equilibrium and Demand, Producer Behaviour and Supply, and Forms of Market and Price Determination under Perfect Competition, covering central problems, the production possibility frontier, utility and indifference-curve analysis, determinants of demand, price elasticity, production functions and costs, revenue, producer's equilibrium, market equilibrium and price ceilings and floors. The macroeconomic units cover National Income and Related Aggregates, Money and Banking, Determination of Income and Employment, Government Budget and the Economy, and Balance of Payments. What the descriptive section rewards is a clean diagram with correctly labelled axes and a short derivation, not a literature-aware essay. Practise drawing indifference curves, cost curves and the AD-AS relationship by hand at speed.
Indian economic development is a third of the list
Five of the fifteen units are Indian: Development Experience 1947 to 1990, Economic Reforms since 1991 covering liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation, Current Challenges Facing the Indian Economy, and Development Experience of India including comparison with neighbours. The current-challenges unit covers poverty, human capital formation, rural development, employment, infrastructure, sustainable development and environment. This block is the most memorisable part of the paper and therefore the cheapest marks available, but it is also where dates, plan periods and policy names have to be exact. It is worth writing out a single timeline from the pre-independence economy through the Five Year Plans to 1991 and after, because both objective and descriptive questions draw from it.
Economics has been the softest large-subject cut-off
CareerPower's archive shows the 2018-19 PGT Economics written cut-off at 87 UR, 86 OBC, 79 SC and 73 ST, the lowest of the four large subjects it lists for that year, with Chemistry at 97, Commerce at 100 and Computer Science at 103 for UR. The 2023 figures put Economics at 134 UR, 126 EWS, 125 OBC-NCL, 120 SC and 112 ST, level with Chemistry and roughly eleven and fifteen marks below Commerce and Computer Science. These are coaching-site figures and KVS had not published a 2026 subject-wise cut-off at the time of writing. The relative position is the useful signal, not the absolute number.
Where Economics candidates actually get eliminated
Tier-1 carries 300 marks of reasoning, numeric ability, basic computer literacy, general knowledge and two languages, with one mark deducted per wrong answer out of three per question, and shortlists to Tier-2 at about 1:10 per category. Economics candidates often assume the general-knowledge and numeric sections are close enough to their discipline to need no work; in practice the general-knowledge part is current affairs and static GK rather than economic policy, and the numeric part is school arithmetic and data interpretation under time pressure. With 129 KVS posts, most Economics applicants leave the process at Tier-1, before the subject paper they prepared for is ever opened.
Common questions
How many KVS PGT Economics vacancies were announced?
Recruitment Notification No. 01/2025 sanctions 129 KVS Post Graduate Teacher (Economics) posts, with a further 148 NVS PGT Economics posts in the same common notification, which makes Economics one of the few subjects where the Navodaya pool is larger than the Kendriya Vidyalaya one. Notified KVS PGT posts across all subjects total 1,465. Testbook and Adda247 both report a later revision quoting 139 Economics posts against a revised KVS PGT total of 1,606, which is not visible in the notification PDF.
What is the KVS PGT Economics Tier-2 syllabus?
KVS published it as a separate document on 13 November 2025. The Economics section lists fifteen units: Introduction; Collection, Organisation and Presentation of Data; Statistical Tools and Interpretation; Introduction to Microeconomics; Consumer's Equilibrium and Demand; Producer Behaviour and Supply; Forms of Market and Price Determination under Perfect Competition; National Income and Related Aggregates; Money and Banking; Determination of Income and Employment; Government Budget and the Economy; Balance of Payments; Development Experience 1947 to 1990 and Economic Reforms since 1991; Current Challenges Facing the Indian Economy; and Development Experience of India. No pedagogy or ICT unit is listed.
Does the KVS PGT Economics paper include statistics?
Yes, and substantially. Three of the fifteen published units are statistics for economics: Collection, Organisation and Presentation of Data, and Statistical Tools and Interpretation, which cover data sources and collection methods, frequency distributions, tabular and diagrammatic presentation, arithmetic mean, median and mode, measures of dispersion, correlation, and index numbers including their application to inflation. Candidates from theory-heavy master's programmes routinely under-prepare this block. The questions are definitional and computational rather than econometric, so the marks are cheap to secure with short, regular numerical practice.
What qualification is needed for KVS PGT Economics?
A master's degree in Economics or a specialisation of it with at least 50 per cent marks, together with a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution with at least 50 per cent marks, or a three-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed. An integrated postgraduate course in the subject from an NCTE-recognised institution with at least 50 per cent aggregate including the B.Ed component is an accepted alternative. Proficiency to teach in both Hindi and English medium is required. The upper age limit for PGT posts is 40 years, with the usual category relaxations.
What was the KVS PGT Economics cut-off?
KVS had not published a subject-wise cut-off for the 2026 cycle at the time of writing; it is normally released with the final result. CareerPower's archive lists the 2023 PGT Economics cut-off as 134 UR, 126 EWS, 125 OBC-NCL, 120 SC and 112 ST, and the 2018-19 written-stage figures as 87 UR, 86 OBC, 79 SC and 73 ST, the lowest of the large subjects that year. These are coaching-site figures, not a KVS release, and are best read as showing Economics sitting below Commerce and Computer Science rather than as a target score.
Can I apply for KVS PGT Economics now?
No. Applications under Recruitment Notification 01/2025 opened on 14 November 2025 and closed on 4 December 2025. Tier-1 was held on 10 and 11 January 2026 and the Tier-2 Economics paper in late March 2026, with results released in phases through September 2026 and interviews now in progress after KVS issued the bio-data format on 21 August 2026. No fresh KVS PGT Economics notification has been announced. KVS teaching recruitment runs in occasional large drives, with earlier PGT cycles on record in 2016-17, 2018-19 and 2022-23.
