What the PGT Computer Science candidate actually sits

Computer Science candidates should note that Part III of Tier-1, Basic Computer Literacy, is not their subject paper: it is 20 general questions worth 60 marks that every applicant for every post answers, and it rewards familiarity with office software and everyday computing rather than programming. The actual Computer Science paper is Tier-2, 2.5 hours and 100 marks, and it is written on paper in OMR and descriptive form, not at a terminal. Shortlisting runs about 1:10 into Tier-2 and about 1:3 from Tier-2 into interview.

Dates and windows

The schedule above is common to every post and every subject in Recruitment Notification 01/2025; Computer Science has no separate window or exam date of its own. The notification, the Tier-2 syllabus and the interview bio-data format are confirmed on the KVS site, while the exam and result dates come from coaching trackers and are marked as reported. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

The eligibility rule is where most PGT Computer Science applications fail, and it fails in the opposite direction to what candidates expect. This notification does not list a B.E. or B.Tech route, a post-graduate diploma route or a DOEACC B-level route. It asks for a master's-level computing qualification, and a B.Tech in Computer Science on its own does not satisfy it however strong the degree.

Only four degree routes, and none of them is a B.Tech

Recruitment Notification 01/2025 gives PGT Computer Science an essential qualification of M.Sc. in Computer Science or IT, or MCA, from a recognised institution or university with at least 50 per cent marks, or M.E. or M.Tech. in Computer Science or IT with at least 50 per cent marks. A four-year B.E. or B.Tech, a BCA, a PGDCA or a DOEACC certification is not listed as sufficient. This is narrower than the PGT Computer Science rules several state services and DSSSB operate, and candidates who have cleared those exams on a B.Tech frequently assume the same route works here. Separately, B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution with at least 50 per cent marks, or the three-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed, is required, as it is for every PGT subject.

The syllabus is a school computer-science syllabus

The Tier-2 units KVS published are Computer Systems and Organisation, Computational Thinking and Programming in two parts, Society Law and Ethics, Computer Networks, Database Management, Introduction to Python, Database Concepts and Structured Query Language, Emerging Trends, Data Handling using Pandas, Database Query using SQL, Introduction to Computer Networks and Societal Impacts. That is the shape of the senior-secondary computer-science course a Kendriya Vidyalaya PGT teaches, not a postgraduate computing curriculum. There is no operating systems theory, compiler design, algorithm analysis or software engineering in the list. An MCA or M.Tech holder preparing from postgraduate material will be over-prepared on topics that will not appear and under-prepared on Python string, list, tuple and dictionary operations, file handling and SQL query writing.

Python and SQL are the paper, not a part of it

Across the listed units, programming is Python-specific: data types, operators, control flow, strings with indexing and operations, lists, tuples, dictionaries, the math, random and statistics modules, user-defined functions and scope, and text, binary and CSV file handling. Database work is SQL-specific: relational concepts, DDL and DML commands, queries and Python-SQL connectivity, plus data handling with Pandas and Matplotlib. Preparation should be written practice in exactly these, because the descriptive section asks for code on paper. Candidates who work daily in another language should spend their revision writing Python by hand, including output-prediction and error-spotting, rather than reading about it. Computer Networks, protocols such as HTTP, FTP, TCP/IP, SMTP and POP3, and the ethics and cybersecurity units are high-yield recall and cheap to secure.

Computer Science historically closes highest of all PGT subjects

CareerPower's archive puts the 2023 KVS PGT Computer Science cut-off at 149 UR, 139 OBC-NCL, 136 EWS, 132 SC and 121 ST, the highest of any subject it lists for that year, above Commerce at 145 and Chemistry and Economics at 134. The 2018-19 written-stage figures follow the same order at 103 UR, 99 OBC, 94 SC and 83 ST. The combination of a 176-post pool and a very large supply of MCA and M.Sc. Computer Science graduates with a B.Ed explains it. These are coaching-site figures, not a KVS release, and no 2026 subject-wise cut-off had been published at the time of writing; treat them as showing the relative position of the subject rather than a score to hit.

Do not mistake Tier-1 Part III for your subject

Part III of Tier-1 is Basic Computer Literacy, 20 questions worth 60 marks, and it is the same paper every candidate for every post sits, whether they are applying for PRT Hindi or PGT Computer Science. It tests general computing awareness, not programming, so the advantage a computer scientist has there is real but small and confined to 60 of 300 marks. The remaining 240 marks are reasoning, arithmetic, general knowledge and two language sections, with one mark deducted per wrong answer out of three per question. Since Tier-2 shortlisting is about 1:10 per category, a candidate who assumes the subject expertise carries Tier-1 usually never reaches the Python paper.

Common questions

Is B.Tech Computer Science eligible for KVS PGT Computer Science?

Not on its own under Recruitment Notification 01/2025. The essential qualification listed is M.Sc. in Computer Science or IT, or MCA, from a recognised institution or university with at least 50 per cent marks, or M.E. or M.Tech. in Computer Science or IT with at least 50 per cent marks. No B.E., B.Tech, BCA, post-graduate diploma or DOEACC B-level route appears. A B.Tech holder would need to add a qualifying master's-level computing degree. B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution with at least 50 per cent marks is required in addition, as for every PGT subject.

How many KVS PGT Computer Science vacancies were announced?

Recruitment Notification No. 01/2025 sanctions 176 KVS Post Graduate Teacher (Computer Science) posts, with a further 135 NVS PGT Computer Science posts in the same common notification. The notified KVS PGT total across all subjects is 1,465. Coaching trackers report a later revision to 1,606 KVS PGT posts overall, but they disagree on the Computer Science figure, Testbook quoting 177 and Adda247 quoting 190. Neither revised number appears in the notification PDF, so the notified 176 is the safer reference.

What is the KVS PGT Computer Science Tier-2 syllabus?

KVS published it separately on 13 November 2025. The units are Computer Systems and Organisation including Boolean logic, number systems and encoding schemes; Computational Thinking and Programming in two parts, built entirely on Python; Society, Law and Ethics; Computer Networks including topologies, transmission media and protocols such as HTTP, FTP, TCP/IP, SMTP and POP3; Database Management with relational concepts and SQL, including Python-SQL connectivity; Emerging Trends covering AI, machine learning, IoT, blockchain and cloud computing; Data Handling using Pandas and Matplotlib; and Societal Impacts including cybersecurity.

Is the KVS PGT Computer Science exam a coding test on a computer?

No. Both tiers are pen-and-paper. Tier-1 is a two-hour OMR paper of 100 questions for 300 marks containing no subject content. Tier-2 is the 2.5-hour Computer Science paper, 60 objective questions for 60 marks with 0.25 negative marking, plus 10 descriptive questions for 40 marks with no negative marking. Python code and SQL queries in the descriptive section are written out by hand rather than executed, so practice should include writing and tracing code on paper, including output prediction and error identification.

What was the KVS PGT Computer Science cut-off?

KVS had not released a subject-wise cut-off for the 2026 cycle at the time of writing; it normally comes with the final result. When is the next KVS PGT Computer Science recruitment?

Not announced. The Recruitment Notification 01/2025 window closed on 4 December 2025, Tier-1 was held on 10 and 11 January 2026, the Tier-2 subject paper in late March 2026, results were released in phases through September 2026, and interviews are under way following the bio-data format KVS issued on 21 August 2026. KVS conducts teaching recruitment in occasional large drives rather than annually, with earlier PGT cycles on record in 2016-17, 2018-19 and 2022-23, so no date should be assumed for the next one.
