What the PGT Commerce candidate actually sits

Tier-1 is a two-hour OMR paper of 100 questions for 300 marks with one mark deducted per wrong answer out of the three each question carries; it contains no commerce and screens candidates to Tier-2 at roughly 1:10 per category. The 2.5-hour Tier-2 paper is the only place commerce is tested, and it has to cover Accountancy, Business Studies and the statistics-and-economics stream inside a single 100-mark paper. Shortlisting from Tier-2 to interview runs at about 1:3 per category.

Dates and windows

One schedule serves every post and every subject in Recruitment Notification 01/2025, so there is no Commerce-only window or Commerce-only exam date. Only the notification, the syllabus release and the interview bio-data format are confirmed on the KVS site; the exam and result dates are from coaching trackers and are labelled accordingly. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

Two things trip up PGT Commerce candidates disproportionately. The first is an eligibility trap the notification states outright: an M.Com in Applied or Business Economics does not qualify, and candidates discover this at document verification rather than at application. The second is scope. Commerce is examined across three content streams in a 100-mark paper, while a Chemistry or Economics candidate faces one.

Check the degree title before anything else

The notification requires a master's degree in Commerce with at least 50 per cent marks plus a B.Ed with at least 50 per cent, and then adds a sentence that no other PGT subject carries: a holder of an M.Com degree in Applied or Business Economics shall not be eligible. This is a bar on the degree as titled on the certificate, not an assessment of the papers studied. Candidates from university departments that award the M.Com under that nomenclature should read the clause before paying the fee, because the exclusion is applied at verification after Tier-2 and interview, which is the most expensive possible point to be removed. An M.Com in Accountancy, Business Administration or general Commerce is not affected.

Three streams, one hundred marks

The published Tier-2 Commerce syllabus is split across Accountancy in fourteen units, Business Studies in twenty-three units, and a statistics-and-economics component. The Accountancy units run from Introduction to Accounting and Theory Base through Depreciation, Trial Balance and Rectification, Partnership Firms including reconstitution, retirement, death and dissolution, Share Capital, Debentures, Financial Statements of a Company and Cash Flow Statement. The Business Studies units run from Foundation of Business through the management sequence of Planning, Organising, Staffing, Directing and Controlling, to Financial Management, Financial Markets, Marketing and Consumer Protection. A PGT Commerce candidate cannot afford to be a pure accountancy specialist; roughly two-thirds of the listed units are not accountancy at all.

The descriptive forty marks favour Commerce candidates

Ten descriptive questions carry 40 marks with no negative marking, against 60 objective questions worth 60 marks penalised at 0.25 each. For Commerce this asymmetry is unusually exploitable, because the descriptive format suits partnership reconstitution and company final-accounts problems, cash flow statements and ratio analysis, which are worked answers rather than recall. Business Studies descriptive questions on principles of management, business environment or consumer protection under the 2019 Act reward structured, bulleted-in-substance prose written quickly. Practise finishing a full partnership or cash-flow problem in eight to ten minutes; the entire paper is 2.5 hours and the objective half will consume most of the first ninety.

Commerce closes high relative to the science subjects

CareerPower's archive puts the 2023 KVS PGT Commerce cut-off at 145 UR, 140 EWS, 138 OBC-NCL, 130 SC and 116 ST, and the 2018-19 written-stage figure at 100 UR, 95 OBC, 88 SC and 77 ST. In the same archive Commerce sits second only to Computer Science and about eleven marks above Chemistry and Economics at UR in 2023. The likely reason is arithmetic rather than difficulty: with only 96 KVS posts notified, Commerce has one of the smallest vacancy pools in the cycle against a large pool of B.Com and M.Com graduates. These are coaching-site figures and KVS had not published a 2026 subject-wise cut-off at the time of writing.

Do not let Tier-1 numeric ability lull you

Commerce candidates often assume the Numeric Ability part of Tier-1 is free marks. It is 20 questions of 100, worth 60 of 300, and it is arithmetic and data interpretation rather than accounting, so the transfer is smaller than expected. The heavier risk sits in Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge, another 40 questions and 120 marks, which have no relationship to a commerce degree at all. With Tier-1 deducting one mark per wrong answer and shortlisting to Tier-2 at about 1:10 per category, a Commerce candidate who prepares only the subject paper will usually never sit it.

Common questions

Is an M.Com in Business Economics eligible for KVS PGT Commerce?

No. Recruitment Notification 01/2025 states that a holder of an M.Com degree in Applied or Business Economics shall not be eligible for the PGT Commerce post. The bar is on the degree as titled, not on the papers studied within it, and it is applied at document verification. An M.Com in Commerce, Accountancy or similar nomenclature with at least 50 per cent marks, plus a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution with at least 50 per cent marks, is the eligible route. Proficiency to teach in both Hindi and English medium is also required.

How many KVS PGT Commerce vacancies were announced?

Recruitment Notification No. 01/2025 sanctions 96 KVS Post Graduate Teacher (Commerce) posts, alongside 43 NVS PGT Commerce posts in the same common notification. That makes Commerce one of the smaller subject pools in a cycle whose notified KVS PGT total is 1,465. Adda247 reports a later upward revision to 102 Commerce posts against a revised KVS PGT total of 1,606, but the revision is not visible in the notification PDF and revised per-subject figures differ between coaching trackers, so the notified 96 is the safer reference.

What subjects does the KVS PGT Commerce Tier-2 paper cover?

Three streams. Accountancy covers fourteen units from Introduction to Accounting and Theory Base through Depreciation and Provisions, Trial Balance and Rectification, partnership accounting including reconstitution, retirement, death and dissolution, Share Capital, Debentures, Financial Statements of a Company and Cash Flow Statement. What is the exam pattern for KVS PGT Commerce?

Tier-1 is a two-hour OMR paper of 100 questions for 300 marks, split as Reasoning 20, Numeric Ability 20, Basic Computer Literacy 20, General Knowledge 20, English 10 and a Modern Indian Language 10, with one mark deducted per wrong answer; it carries no commerce. Tier-2 is the commerce paper, 2.5 hours, 60 objective questions for 60 marks with 0.25 negative marking plus 10 descriptive questions for 40 marks. The final merit weights Tier-2 at 85 per cent and the 100-mark interview at 15 per cent.

What was the KVS PGT Commerce cut-off?

KVS had not published a subject-wise cut-off for the 2026 cycle at the time of writing; it normally accompanies the final result. Is KVS PGT Commerce recruitment open now?

No. The application window for Recruitment Notification 01/2025 ran from 14 November to 4 December 2025 and is closed. Tier-1 was held on 10 and 11 January 2026 and the Tier-2 subject paper in late March 2026, with results released in phases through September 2026 and interviews now in progress following the bio-data format KVS published on 21 August 2026. No fresh KVS PGT Commerce notification has been announced, and KVS recruits teachers in occasional drives rather than every year.
