The same notification also carries 121 NVS PGT Chemistry posts, which are a separate cadre applied for through the same common application. KVS PGT posts across all subjects total 1,465 in the notification as issued.

KVS Interview Bio-data FormatCoaching trackers report that the sanctioned strength was revised upward after the notification, to 1,606 KVS PGT posts overall, with Chemistry quoted at 227 by both Testbook and Adda247. That revision is not reflected in the notification PDF itself, and the per-subject revised numbers differ between trackers, so the 204 figure in the signed notification remains the safer reference.

Tier-1 is a two-hour OMR paper of 100 questions for 300 marks, with one mark deducted for each wrong answer out of the three a question carries. It contains no subject matter and functions purely as a screen: candidates are called to Tier-2 in a ratio of about 1:10 per category. All of the chemistry a PGT Chemistry candidate is tested on sits in the 2.5-hour Tier-2 paper, which is worth 100 marks in total and splits 60 objective to 40 descriptive. Tier-2 to interview shortlisting runs at roughly 1:3 per category.

This calendar is common to every post and every subject in Recruitment Notification 01/2025, Chemistry included; there is no separate Chemistry application window or Chemistry exam date. The dates confirmed on the KVS site are the notification, the syllabus and the interview bio-data format; the exam and result dates come from coaching trackers and are labelled as such. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.
What this means for your preparation
The commonest mistake in PGT Chemistry is preparing at the level of the entry qualification rather than the level of the paper. KVS asks for a master's degree in chemistry with 50 per cent marks plus a B.Ed, but the nineteen units KVS published for the Tier-2 chemistry paper are the senior-secondary chemistry sequence, not a postgraduate one. The postgraduate degree is the gate; it is not the syllabus.
Read the published unit list, not your MSc notes
The Tier-2 chemistry units KVS listed run: Basic Concepts, Structure of Atom, Classification of Elements and Periodicity, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Chemical Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Redox Reactions, Organic Chemistry basic principles and techniques, Classification of Hydrocarbons, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, d and f Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, Haloalkanes and Haloarenes, Alcohols Phenols and Ethers, Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids, Amines, and Biomolecules. That is the chemistry a Kendriya Vidyalaya PGT teaches. Nothing in the list points to quantum chemistry beyond orbital structure, group theory, advanced spectroscopy or research methodology. A candidate who spends three months on postgraduate physical chemistry is preparing for a paper KVS did not set, and will still be weak on mole-concept stoichiometry and named organic conversions, which the list puts front and centre.
Sixty objective marks reward accuracy, not coverage
The objective half of the Tier-2 chemistry paper is 60 questions for 60 marks with 0.25 deducted per wrong answer. At one mark a question, there is no reward for attempting a hard coordination-compound or kinetics item on a hunch: four wrong guesses wipe out one correct answer. The arithmetic favours a candidate who answers 48 questions with high confidence over one who answers all 60 at 70 per cent accuracy. Practice should therefore be built around timed sets from the listed units with a recorded accuracy figure, not around reading more topics. Numerical units — Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics — are where accuracy decays fastest under time pressure and where drilling pays most.
The forty descriptive marks are the real differentiator
Ten descriptive questions carry 40 marks, forty per cent of the Tier-2 paper, and carry no negative marking, so every one should be attempted. Chemistry candidates routinely under-practise this because postgraduate examinations let them write at length; here the constraint is that 40 marks and 60 objective questions share 2.5 hours. Mechanisms, balanced equations, structures and Nernst or rate-law derivations have to be written compactly and correctly the first time. Work from the same nineteen units: conversions in haloalkanes and alcohols, distinguishing tests for aldehydes and ketones, crystal-field splitting in coordination compounds and colligative-property numericals are the sort of thing a forty-mark descriptive section on this syllabus is built from.
Where the Chemistry cut-off has historically sat
CareerPower's archive puts the 2023 KVS PGT Chemistry cut-off at 134 for UR, 126 EWS, 125 OBC-NCL, 112 SC and 98 ST, and the 2018-19 written-stage figure at 97 UR, 95 OBC, 84 SC and 71 ST. Against the other large PGT subjects in the same archive, Chemistry sits at the lower end: Computer Science closed at 149 UR and Commerce at 145 UR in 2023, both well above Chemistry. These are coaching-site figures, not a KVS release, and KVS had not published a subject-wise cut-off for the 2026 cycle at the time of writing. Treat them as a rough band, not a target.
Tier-1 is a screen a chemistry graduate can fail
Eighty of Tier-1's hundred questions are reasoning, numeric ability, basic computer literacy and general knowledge, and twenty are language. A chemistry postgraduate typically has no recent practice at any of them, and the deduction is one mark out of the three each question carries, which is harsher in proportion than the Tier-2 penalty. Because Tier-2 shortlisting runs at about 1:10 per category, Tier-1 removes the large majority of applicants before a single chemistry question is asked. In a cycle where Chemistry has roughly two hundred posts, the Tier-1 paper is where most Chemistry candidates actually exit, and it deserves scheduled preparation rather than a week of skimming.

Is a PhD or an MSc in Chemistry required for KVS PGT Chemistry?
A master's degree in chemistry or a specialisation of it, with at least 50 per cent marks, is the essential qualification, together with a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution with at least 50 per cent marks, or a three-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed. An integrated postgraduate course in the subject with 50 per cent aggregate including the B.Ed component is accepted as an alternative. A doctorate is not required. Candidates must also satisfy the common requirement of proficiency to teach in both Hindi and English medium.
How much negative marking is there in the KVS PGT Chemistry paper?
The two tiers penalise differently. Tier-1, the general screening paper, deducts one mark for each wrong answer, against three marks per correct answer across 100 questions and 300 marks. Tier-2, the chemistry paper, deducts 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in the 60-question objective section, where each question is worth one mark. The ten descriptive questions worth 40 marks carry no negative marking at all, so there is no arithmetic reason to leave a descriptive chemistry question blank.
