HPU postgraduate admission at a glance

There is no single Himachal Pradesh University common postgraduate paper. The tests are subject-specific and staggered across a fortnight, which is why a candidate applying for two subjects can find both papers scheduled in the same window. All dates in the first six rows are taken from the Handbook of Information 2026 published on the Himachal Pradesh University website; the August items are read from the university's own notice listings. A separate aggregator page gives an application deadline of 14 June 2026 and an exam window of 1 to 20 June 2026 with a B.Ed test on 15 June; those figures do not match the handbook and should not be treated as official.

What this means for your preparation

The single most costly misunderstanding at Himachal Pradesh University is assuming there is one entrance test and one deadline. There are two admission systems running in parallel with different closing dates, and the earlier of the two closes more than six weeks before the later. A candidate who reads the merit-course deadline of 14 June and applies for an entrance course has already missed 26 April.

Two deadlines, and the earlier one is silent

The handbook fixes 26.04.2026 as the last date for entrance-based courses and 14.06.2026 for merit-based courses. The first thing to do in any future cycle is to locate your exact programme in that split, because everything downstream, including whether you sit a paper at all, follows from it.

Entrance marks alone, qualifying marks alone

Where an entrance test applies, the handbook states admission is made strictly on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance examination. Where it does not, admission is made strictly on the basis of marks in the last qualifying examination. There is no blended weighting in either direction. This is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly, because many Indian universities give the graduation aggregate a share of the final score. At Himachal Pradesh University a strong graduation record buys nothing on the entrance side, and a strong test performance is irrelevant on the merit side. The fee table separates subsidised master's tuition, quoted at Rs 5,370 to Rs 17,870 per semester, from non-subsidised seats where additional fees apply and vary by programme. In practice these run as distinct admission lists. The university's own notices show non-subsidised M.A. History lists reaching a fifth and sixth round on 22 to 24 August 2026 and a non-subsidised Law list in the same period, well after the 25 July closing date for vacant subsidised seats. A candidate short of the subsidised cut-off should be watching the non-subsidised lists specifically, since they move on their own and later calendar.

Distance and campus admission run on different clocks

Several of the late-August items are HPUDES and CDOE notices, that is, the distance and open-learning arms, not the Summer Hill campus departments. The M.A. English, M.A. Hindi, M.A. Political Science and B.Com counselling notifications posted on 25 and 31 August 2026 carry HPUDES labels, and the September items include class links for a CDOE BA first-semester batch admitted in August 2026. Reading these as evidence that campus postgraduate admission is still open would be a mistake. If the regular entrance route has closed for the year, the distance route is a genuinely separate option with its own later timetable, not an extension of the same one.
