The exam date of 29 November 2026 is consistent across every source consulted. The application dates are not: the extension is reported with different closing dates by different portals, which is common when a deadline is pushed more than once. None of these dates could be read off the official site directly, as the fetched gujaratset.ac.in page returned an older cycle's content.
What this means for your preparation
The most common misunderstanding about GSET is what the certificate buys. It is an eligibility test, not a recruitment: Karmasandhan describes its purpose plainly as eligibility for Assistant Professor in Gujarat State. Qualifying does not produce a job, a rank list or a posting, and it does not carry the Junior Research Fellowship that UGC NET can award. It removes one barrier to applying for college and university teaching posts in the state.
Paper II is two thirds of your score
The arithmetic is worth internalising before you build a study plan. Paper I is 50 questions for 100 marks; Paper II is 100 questions for 200 marks in your postgraduate subject. The qualifying threshold of 40 per cent for General and EWS candidates, or 35 per cent for SC, ST, PwD, transgender and orphan candidates, is computed on the aggregate of both papers, which means a strong subject paper can carry a mediocre aptitude paper but not the reverse. Candidates who arrive from general competitive-exam backgrounds tend to over-invest in Paper I because it resembles what they already train for. That is the wrong allocation in a paper weighted two to one against them.
No negative marking changes how you sit it
Neither paper deducts marks for a wrong answer. Combined with a three-hour continuous sitting of 150 objective questions, this means there is no defensible reason to leave a question blank, and any time management plan should end with a sweep to fill every remaining bubble. It also changes the value of partial elimination: on a four-option question, narrowing to two doubles your expected return at zero risk. Paper I can be prepared from UGC NET material

Eligibility turns on the Master's, not on age

There is no upper age limit, which makes GSET unusual among state examinations and means it stays open to candidates who have aged out of recruitment exams. Treat GSET and NET as complements, not alternatives
GSET certification is described by its sources as eligibility for Assistant Professor posts, and the sources consulted make no mention of GSET awarding a Junior Research Fellowship. If a fellowship is part of your plan, UGC NET remains the route for that and GSET does not substitute. The sensible reading for a Gujarat-based postgraduate is that GSET is a second, state-level chance at Assistant Professor eligibility on a different calendar from NET, sat on 29 November 2026 against NET's own sessions, with a subject paper close enough in level that one body of preparation serves both.
