The Social Security Assistant figures come from EPFO's own 2023 advertisement PDF. The Stenographer paper split and dictation timings are taken from Careerpower's syllabus write-up because the official Stenographer advertisement PDF could not be opened; they should be checked against the next advertisement before you plan around them. Note the shape of the SSA paper in particular: English alone carries 200 of the 600 marks, a third of the paper.

Dates and windows

Every confirmed line here is read off EPFO's own Recruitments listing or the 2023 advertisement. The only open question on the calendar is when the next advertisement appears, and no official source gives a date for it.

What this means for your preparation

The commonest mistake with this recruitment is reading a coaching page's 2026 dates as though they were EPFO's. The 27 March to 26 April window doing the rounds is the 2023 advertisement's window with the year changed. EPFO's own Recruitments page shows the opposite: the 2023 cycle reached its posting-allocation stage in March 2026 and nothing new has replaced it.

Treat the two posts as separate examinations

Social Security Assistant and Stenographer were advertised together in 2023 but tested differently, and the difference matters for how you prepare. The SSA paper is 150 questions for 600 marks with a quarter-mark penalty and a computer literacy block worth only 40 marks. The Stenographer paper, as reported, is a longer 200-question, 800-mark paper weighted heavily towards English Language and Comprehension at 400 marks. The second stages are not comparable at all: SSA candidates face a data entry test at 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi, while Stenographer candidates face dictation for ten minutes at 80 words per minute followed by transcription in 50 minutes for English or 65 for Hindi. A Stenographer aspirant who trains only typing speed has prepared for the wrong test.

The skill test does not add to your rank

The 2023 advertisement is explicit that the computer skill test is qualifying in nature and that marks obtained will not be reckoned for merit ranking. That has two consequences. First, every mark that decides your selection is earned in the Phase I written paper, so the written paper deserves essentially all of your scoring effort. Second, a qualifying test is a pass-fail gate with no partial credit for coming close, so a candidate typing at thirty words per minute against a thirty-five word requirement loses the whole selection regardless of a strong written score. Build the speed to a comfortable margin above the threshold well before the written result, because the gap between result and skill test is usually short.

English decides the SSA paper

In the SSA Phase I structure, English with Comprehension is 50 questions for 200 marks. General Aptitude, General Knowledge and Quantitative Ability carry 30 questions and 120 marks each, and Computer Literacy only 10 questions and 40 marks. In other words a third of the paper sits in one section, and it is a section where accuracy under a one-fourth penalty is achievable with reading practice rather than formula recall. Candidates who allocate study time evenly across five sections are under-investing in the section that actually moves their total. The Computer Literacy block, at 40 marks, deserves proportionally little time despite being the section people most often over-prepare.

Shortlisting is category-wise, roughly ten to one

The 2023 advertisement provides for calling candidates to the skill test at about ten times the number of vacancies in each category. Because the ratio is applied within each category rather than across the whole merit list, the effective written threshold differs by category and by the vacancy count of the year. There is no fixed cut-off to aim at, and last cycle's published cut-off is a description of a particular vacancy count and a particular paper's difficulty, not a target. Use it to gauge roughly where a competitive score sits, and expect it to move if the next advertisement notifies a materially different number of posts.

Watch the official page, not the aggregators

EPFO publishes advertisements and stage notices on its own Recruitments listing, and the 2023 application itself ran through NTA's EPFO recruitment portal rather than an EPFO-hosted form. Careerpower reports that IBPS will conduct the next EPFO examinations for ASO, SSA and JSA, but no official notice confirms this. The practical consequence is that you cannot assume the application portal will be the same as last time, and a bookmark to a coaching page will not tell you when the real form opens. Check the EPFO Recruitments page itself, and expect the advertisement to name its own application portal.

No. As of 22 September 2026 EPFO's own Recruitments page carries no new Social Security Assistant or Stenographer advertisement. The most recent SSA entry there is dated 16/03/2026 and concerns posting category and ranks for candidates recruited against the vacancies notified in 2023. Coaching sites showing an application window of 27 March to 26 April 2026 are repeating the 2023 advertisement's dates, which the official 2023 PDF records as 27th March, 2023 to 26th April, 2023.

Does UPSC conduct the EPFO Social Security Assistant exam?

Not for this post. UPSC handles EPFO's officer-level recruitment, and news reporting in 2024 covered a UPSC EPFO Personal Assistant examination. The Social Security Assistant and Stenographer cycle advertised in 2023 was run by EPFO with applications taken through NTA's EPFO recruitment portal. Careerpower reports that IBPS will conduct the next EPFO examinations for the ASO, SSA and JSA posts, but that is a coaching report and no official EPFO notice has confirmed it.
