Urdu supplies exactly 100 of the 200 marks. The other 100 are the general battery every candidate in the recruitment sits regardless of subject, and two of its five blocks, Hindi and English comprehension, are language work an Urdu graduate can convert efficiently. Note that the paper also carries Hindi as a compulsory 20-mark block in Section A, which is a real constraint for candidates educated largely through Urdu and English.

What this means for your preparation

Urdu candidates lose this paper in Hindi and arithmetic, not in Urdu. The subject is worth 100 marks and, for a graduate who meets the eligibility rule, those marks are largely secure. The other 100 are General Awareness, reasoning, arithmetic, Hindi and English at 20 marks each, and the compulsory Hindi block in particular catches candidates whose schooling and degree ran through Urdu and English. The second thing to understand is the vacancy shape: 161 posts, none of them unreserved, and 116 of them in the female post code.

The compulsory Hindi block

Section A contains a 20-mark Hindi Language and Comprehension block that every candidate must sit, including those applying for Urdu. For a candidate whose academic life has been in Urdu and English this is not a free 20 marks, and it cannot be skipped by reallocating effort to Urdu, because Section B is capped at 100. The material is Devanagari comprehension, grammar and usage at school standard rather than literary Hindi, so it is finishable with a few weeks of systematic work on script fluency, sandhi, samas, idioms and passage reading. Candidates who defer it until the last month typically convert fewer than half of those 20 marks.

What the board actually publishes about Urdu

DSSSB does not print a topic-level Urdu syllabus. The advertisement's scheme of examination says only that Section B is MCQs of one mark each from the subject concerned, including questions on teaching methodology and B.Ed. That single line and the eligibility rule are the full extent of the official statement, so detailed Urdu topic lists on coaching sites are reconstructions rather than the board's syllabus. The level follows the eligibility, a Bachelor's in Urdu with 50 per cent marks, and a meaningful share of the 100 questions is pedagogy from the B.Ed. rather than literature, which is the part subject specialists most often under-prepare.

A narrow field and a distorted reservation shape

The 06/2025 table shows 67/25 as 28 OBC, 1 SC, 2 ST and 14 EWS for 45 posts, and 68/25 as 81 OBC and 35 EWS for 116 posts, with unreserved at zero in both and no SC or ST seats in the female code at all. Urdu in this cycle is therefore an OBC and EWS backlog recruitment, heavily weighted to female vacancies. The consequence for planning is that the relevant cut-off is your own category's within your own post code, and a strong overall score in a category with two or three seats can still fall short. Read the category table before deciding the post is worth a year.

Pedagogy is inside the same hundred marks

Because teaching methodology sits within Section B, every pedagogy question displaces an Urdu content question. Language pedagogy, the teaching of reading and writing, error correction, evaluation and lesson planning, is examinable and is the block that literature-trained candidates routinely leave to chance. The B.Ed. is already an eligibility requirement, so the material exists in your own coursework; the fault is treating the degree as a gate passed rather than as examinable content. Revise the language-teaching methods component alongside the literature and treat the two as one 100-mark preparation, not as a subject with an appendix.

Two hours, two hundred questions, a quarter off

The paper allows 36 seconds a question and deducts 0.25 for each wrong answer. In a subject with 161 seats and a small qualified pool, a handful of marks moves a position materially, so reckless guessing is costlier here than in a 675-post subject. A workable order is Urdu first while recall is sharpest, then the English and Hindi comprehension blocks, then reasoning and arithmetic which reward time, and General Awareness last because it is recall or nothing. The qualifying floor of 40 per cent for General and EWS is not the target; the merit position against your category within your post code is.

What is the eligibility for DSSSB TGT Urdu?
