Social Science is the one TGT subject in this recruitment where a single honours degree does not cover the paper. Eligibility is satisfied by having studied any one of History, Political Science, Geography, Economics, Sociology, Business Studies or Statistics, but Section B's 100 marks are drawn across history, geography, civics and economics together. What this means for your preparation
The defining problem of this paper is that Social Science is not a subject, it is four. Eligibility is granted on one of History, Political Science, Geography, Economics, Sociology, Business Studies or Statistics, but Section B examines history, geography, civics and economics together in a single 100-mark block. A history graduate who prepares history thoroughly has covered perhaps a quarter of the subject half of the paper. Four disciplines, one hundred marks
The published Social Science syllabus breaks into four areas. History runs from the contemporary world, the Industrial Revolution and the economic depression through the major revolutions and wars to the Indian freedom struggle from 1885 to 1947. Geography covers earth studies, geomorphology, climatology, oceanography, mapping and the biosphere, alongside India's physical features, climate and natural resources. Civics and political science cover political systems, power sharing, federalism, democracy and diversity, political parties, elections and the Indian Constitution. Economics covers basic concepts, poverty, food security, development, Indian economic structure, finance and banking. Budget preparation across all four rather than deepening the one you hold a degree in; an unprepared quarter costs more marks than a very strong quarter earns.
Where the cheap marks sit
Of the four areas, geography and economics are the most rule-bound and therefore the most reliably scoreable. Geomorphology, climatology, oceanography and mapping are definitional and diagrammatic, and Indian physical geography, climate and resources are a closed list that can be finished and revised. The economics block is similarly bounded: poverty, food security, development indicators, and the structure of Indian finance and banking. History and civics reward breadth but punish half-knowledge, because MCQs on the freedom struggle and on constitutional provisions hinge on dates, names and article numbers. Secure geography and economics first, then spend the remaining time on the 1885 to 1947 sequence and the Constitution.
The competition is wider here than elsewhere
With 310 male and 92 female posts and roughly 58 per cent of them unreserved, Social Science attracts the largest applicant pool in the recruitment, and unlike the Punjabi and Urdu codes it is genuinely open. Seven different degree subjects grant eligibility, so the field is not only large but heterogeneous, and it includes candidates whose degree is in sociology, business studies or statistics and who will be examined on none of those directly. That combination pushes the effective cut-off well above the 40 per cent qualifying bar, and it is the reason a Social Science candidate cannot afford to concede Section A in the way a small-field language candidate sometimes can.
Do not discount the general half
Section A is the same 100 marks for every subject: General Awareness, General Intelligence and Reasoning, Arithmetical and Numerical Ability, Hindi Language and Comprehension and English Language and Comprehension, 20 marks each. Social Science candidates have a genuine edge in General Awareness, because polity, modern history, geography and economic current affairs overlap heavily with what they are already revising for Section B. The trap is the reverse asymmetry: arithmetic and reasoning are the two blocks with no overlap at all, and they are 40 marks. Treat them as a separate daily habit rather than as revision, because they improve with repetition and not with reading.
Pedagogy and the marking penalty
Teaching methodology and B.Ed. content sit inside Section B, not in a separate paper, so every pedagogy question displaces a content question in the same 100 marks. Social science pedagogy, source-based teaching, map work, project and inquiry methods and evaluation, is examinable and is often the block that composite-subject candidates ignore entirely. On timing, 200 questions in 120 minutes is 36 seconds each with 0.25 deducted per error. The rational pass order is Section B first while recall is sharpest, since that is where your preparation is deepest, then comprehension, then reasoning and arithmetic, leaving General Awareness for the residue.

Which degree makes me eligible for DSSSB TGT Social Science?
