The PGT English paper at a glance

An English candidate meets the subject twice in the same paper. Twenty of Section A's hundred marks are English language and comprehension, and then all two hundred marks of Section B are English at post-graduate level with pedagogy. Dates and windows

What this means for your preparation

The recurring mistake in PGT English is preparing as though this were a literature examination. It is not. Two hundred marks of Section B combine English at post-graduate standard with teaching methodology, and the April 2026 paper is reported to have mixed grammar, literature and vocabulary with explicit teaching-aptitude questions. A candidate who has read the Norton anthology but never opened a methods-of-language-teaching text is preparing for two thirds of the section.

Grammar is not beneath a postgraduate paper

Reporting on the 15 April 2026 English paper puts grammar and vocabulary alongside literature in Section B, and Section A adds a further twenty marks of English language and comprehension on top. That is a large body of marks available to precise, mechanical accuracy: agreement, tense sequence, prepositions, idiom, error spotting, one-word substitution. Postgraduate candidates routinely underweight this because it feels like undergraduate work, then lose it to carelessness under a three-hour, three-hundred-question clock. Drill it to reflex speed so that the time saved there can be spent on the literature and pedagogy questions that genuinely need thought.

The Hindi twenty marks decide borderline cases

Section A gives twenty marks each to English and Hindi language and comprehension. An English postgraduate can generally treat the English twenty as secured, which means the Hindi twenty is the swing block, and it is the one most English candidates neglect entirely. In a subject with ninety-three posts and a correspondingly large applicant pool, the difference between a place and a near miss is routinely a handful of marks. Basic Hindi grammar, synonyms and antonyms, sandhi and samas, and a short comprehension passage are a bounded, learnable body of material, unlike the open-ended literature reading.

Male and female post codes are scored separately

Post code 05/25 carries sixty-four posts and 06/25 carries twenty-nine, and they were examined on different days, 16 and 15 April 2026 respectively. Merit and cut-offs are struck per post code, so the two sets of candidates are not competing with each other and the paper set for each day was different. Any cut-off figure that circulates for PGT English is meaningless unless it names which of the two codes it belongs to. Apply the same caution to shift-wise difficulty claims: the two papers were different instruments and normalisation across them does not arise.

Pedagogy is a stated component, not a rumour

DSSSB's scheme describes Section B as the post-graduate course qualification together with teaching methodology, and the April 2026 English analysis records teaching-aptitude questions in the paper. Prepare the pedagogy of English specifically rather than generic educational psychology: approaches to teaching prose, poetry and grammar, language acquisition and the structural versus communicative debate, remedial teaching, evaluation and question design, use of teaching aids, and the objectives of the senior-secondary English course a Delhi government school actually runs. Attempt discipline in a 300-question paper

Three hundred questions in three hours allows thirty-six seconds per question, and 0.25 is deducted for every wrong answer, so four errors cancel a correct answer. Reported good attempts across the April 2026 PGT papers were 175 to 210. That is the practical shape of a strong English attempt: near-total coverage of Section A's language and reasoning, aggressive attempt of grammar and vocabulary in Section B, and selective engagement with literature questions on periods or authors outside your own postgraduate specialism.
