CGA AAO and JAO examinations at a glance

The Junior Accounts Officer examination exists in two forms: JAO (Civil) within the Civil Accounts organisation, and JAO (Common) which serves staff of the Delhi Administration, the Cabinet Secretariat and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. CGA separately runs a Departmental Confirmatory Examination for Accountants, limited competitive examinations for promotion of Lower Division Clerks to Accountant and of matriculate Group D staff to Lower Division Clerk, and a qualifying examination for non-matriculate Group D staff.

Dates and windows

Two of these rows are deliberately empty of dates. Neither the AAO (Civil) nor the JAO examination has a notified forthcoming sitting on the CGA website, and nothing here projects one from the 2022 cycle. When a cycle is announced, the sequence visible in the 2022 record was registration through the online portal, then admit cards by order, then the result by order.

What this means for your preparation

The honest headline for this examination is an absence. The Controller General of Accounts publishes its examination notices, admit card orders and results on its own site, and as at 22 September 2026 the newest of those for the AAO (Civil) examination is dated August 2022. Anyone circulating a 2026 AAO examination date is not taking it from cga.nic.in, and it should be treated as unverified until an order appears there.

Read the absence correctly

A gap in published notices is not proof that no examination has been held; the CGA site is not always a complete or timely index, and orders sometimes circulate internally through Pay and Accounts Offices before they appear online. What the gap does mean is that no date can responsibly be quoted. The practical response is to treat the departmental channel as primary: the registration process for the computer-based test runs through the candidate's own Pay and Accounts Office, which will receive the circular whether or not it is posted publicly. Ask the PAO administration section directly rather than relying on aggregator sites, and treat any date without an order number and a date of issue as rumour.

The registration route is institutional, not individual

CGA has published a Standard Operating Procedure specifically for approvers in the AAO computer-based test registration process, which tells you something important about how the examination works. Registration is not a matter of an individual candidate filling in a form on a portal and paying a fee; a candidate's entry has to be approved within the Pay and Accounts Office chain before it becomes valid. That creates a second internal deadline sitting inside the public registration window, and it is the one candidates miss. Submit early enough for the approver to act, and confirm that the approval has actually been recorded rather than assuming that a submitted form is a completed registration.

The eight-paper syllabus is the historical shape

The question papers CGA publishes run from 2009 to 2018 and consistently show eight papers: Precis and Draft, Service Rules, Accounting Procedure, Parliamentary Financial Control and Government Budgeting, Specialised Account Rules and Office Management, Public Works Accounts, Procurement Supply Accounts Internal Audit and Control, and Commercial and Management Accounts. That is the written-era structure, and the examination has since moved to a computer-based test. The subject spread remains the most reliable guide to the knowledge domain, and the old papers are the best free practice material available, but the number of papers, the marks and the question format under the CBT regulations must be taken from the notification for the cycle actually being sat.

Do not conflate AAO with JAO

CGA runs both an Assistant Accounts Officer (Civil) examination and a Junior Accounts Officer examination, and the JAO examination itself exists in two versions: JAO (Civil) inside the Civil Accounts organisation and JAO (Common) for staff of the Delhi Administration, the Cabinet Secretariat and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. They are separate examinations with separate candidate populations, and a circular addressed to one does not govern the other. Work from the order numbers

Everything CGA issues for this examination carries an order number and a date, for example Order No 1976 dated 11 August 2022 for the 2022 CBT result and Order No X-11002/2/2022-EXAM-CGA/7927/1954 dated 22 July 2022 for the admit cards. That numbering is the practical test of authenticity. A screenshot or forwarded message about an AAO examination date that carries no order number, no date of issue and no link to a file on cga.nic.in should not be acted on, and certainly not used to plan leave or preparation. When a new cycle opens, expect the same three-document pattern: a registration circular, an admit card order, then a result order.

When is the next CGA AAO (Civil) examination?

No date has been published. As at 22 September 2026 the Controller General of Accounts website carries no notification for a forthcoming AAO (Civil) computer-based test, and the most recent dated item relating to the examination on its latest announcements and circulars page is the 2022 CBT result order dated 11 August 2022. Rather than project a date from that cycle, watch the CGA examination and announcements pages, and ask your own Pay and Accounts Office, since the registration process for this examination runs through the PAO chain.

Is the AAO (Civil) examination still a written exam?

The Controller General of Accounts operates the examination as a Computer Based Test and maintains a dedicated online registration portal for it, along with a Standard Operating Procedure for the approvers who process registrations inside Pay and Accounts Offices. The written-format question papers published on the CGA site stop at 2018. The subject coverage of those older papers remains useful as study material, but the number of papers, marks and question format applicable to any future sitting should be taken from the notification for that cycle rather than from the 2018 papers.

How do I register for the AAO CBT?
