DFAT Graduate Program 2028: Timeline, Salary, Eligibility, Acceptance Rate

Checked 1 November 2026. On 1 November 2026 DFAT's graduate page said the 2027 program had closed and invited registrations of interest for the 2028 program; no 2028 dates, salary or degree window had been published. Program details are from DFAT's published 2027 program information unless labelled as our expectation for 2028. Read on 1 Nov 2026.

Applications for the 2028 DFAT Graduate Program are not open yet: on 1 November 2026 DFAT's graduate page said the 2027 program had closed and that you can register your interest in the 2028 program and be notified when applications open. DFAT has published no 2028 dates; for the 2027 program applications opened in March 2026 and closed in April 2026, so we expect the 2028 round around March–April 2027 (our expectation, not an announced date: check dfat.gov.au).

For the 2027 program DFAT lists a salary of $84,115 plus 15.4% superannuation at APS 4 on commencement, rising to $92,753 plus 15.4% super at APS 5 when you complete the 18-month program. You must be an Australian citizen when you apply, and for the 2027 program you needed at least a bachelor's degree completed between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2026. We found no official acceptance rate. This guide sets out the official timeline, salary, eligibility rules, streams and selection stages, and how to prepare before the round opens.

After the eligibility check, the online assessment is the first assessment stage. DFAT's selection page describes it as a "behavioural and/or psychometric assessment" and names no test provider, length or question types. Start a short free sample below: it mixes reasoning and behavioural questions in our timed practice player and explains every answer. Our DFAT online assessment guide covers this stage in detail, and the APS graduate aptitude test guide covers aptitude tests across APS graduate programs.

DFAT Graduate Program timeline: the official 2027 calendar and what to expect for 2028

DFAT published a recruitment calendar for the 2027 program. Here it is, with the dates we expect for the 2028 program if DFAT repeats it. The right-hand column is our expectation, shifted by one year; DFAT has not announced any of it.

Step2027 program (official)2028 program (our expectation)
Applications openMarch 2026~March 2027
Applications closeApril 2026~April 2027
Selection processApril to July 2026~April to July 2027
Recommendations for employment and security clearanceAugust 2026~August 2027
Letters of offer (pending security clearance)October to December 2026~October to December 2027
Relocation to CanberraJanuary to February 2027~January to February 2028
Program startsFebruary 2027~February 2028

Two things follow from this calendar. First, the 2027 window was short: applications opened in March 2026 and closed in April 2026 (DFAT gives months, not exact dates), so it pays (our advice) to have your degree details, your study and work history and examples of your experience ready before the 2028 round opens. Second, the published calendar allows roughly 10 to 11 months between the application window and the February 2027 start (our arithmetic), covering selection, recommendations and the security clearance; letters of offer are scheduled for October to December 2026, pending the grant of the clearance. To hear when the 2028 round opens, use the register-your-interest link on DFAT's Graduate program page.

DFAT graduate salary

DFAT states the classification and salary on its program summary. For the 2027 program:

PointClassificationSalary (2027 program)Super at 15.4% (our arithmetic)Salary + super (our arithmetic)
On commencementAPS 4$84,115 + 15.4% super$12,953.71$97,068.71
On completion (after 18 months)APS 5$92,753 + 15.4% super$14,283.96$107,036.96
DFAT graduate pay, 2027 program (salary and 15.4% super)
APS 5 on completion: salary + super (our arithmetic)$107,036.96
APS 5 on completion: salary$92,753
APS 4 on commencement: salary + super (our arithmetic)$97,068.71
APS 4 on commencement: salary$84,115

Annual figures in Australian dollars from DFAT's 2027 program summary; super computed by us at the stated 15.4%. No 2028 salary published yet.

Superannuation is paid by the employer on top of salary, so the 15.4% does not come out of your pay. DFAT also lists training from its Diplomatic Academy, generous leave, employee networks, an inclusive and flexible workplace and a relocation package if you move to Canberra from within Australia. DFAT has not yet published a 2028 salary; we expect it with the 2028 recruitment information. The figures above are the 2027 program's.

Worked example 1: what the 2027 graduate salary means each month

  • APS 4: $84,115 ÷ 12 = $7,009.58 a month before tax. Super on top: $84,115 × 15.4% = $12,953.71 a year. (Our arithmetic.)
  • APS 5: $92,753 ÷ 12 = $7,729.42 a month before tax. Super on top: $14,283.96 a year. (Our arithmetic.)
  • The step from APS 4 to APS 5 on completion is $8,638 a year, a rise of 10.3%. (Our arithmetic.)
  • These are gross monthly equivalents (annual salary ÷ 12), not take-home pay estimates.

Salaries from DFAT's 2027 program summary. Monthly figures are simple annual ÷ 12 gross amounts.

Eligibility: who can apply

DFAT's graduate page sets these rules for the 2027 program, on top of its general eligibility requirements:

RuleWhat DFAT says
Australian citizenshipYou must be an Australian citizen at the time of application. Under the Public Service Act 1999, all DFAT employees must be Australian citizens
DegreeAt least a bachelor's degree completed between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2026 (2027 program). The selection page: the most recent degree must not be more than 5 years old
Overseas qualificationIf your only qualification is from an overseas institution, provide Australian documentation recognising it (Department of Education)
Security clearanceObtain an Australian national security clearance at Negative Vetting Level 2 before starting, and maintain it: the graduate page says loss of a security clearance at any time will lead to termination of employment
Applying from overseasPossible. The graduate page says the security interview will be conducted in Australia, and if you are overseas you are expected to return at your own expense

Two DFAT pages put the security interview slightly differently. The graduate page says the interview "will be conducted in Australia"; DFAT's general eligibility page says that, depending on your circumstances, it may be by videoconference or you may need to travel to Canberra at your own expense, assessed case by case. Plan for travel if you are abroad. The clearance process can take several months and includes background checks with ASIO, and DFAT says an offer of employment may be withdrawn if you cannot get the required clearance.

Worked example 2: does your degree fit the window?

  • Rule used: the 2027 program window, bachelor's degree or higher completed between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2026.
  • Finished your degree in November 2021 → outside the 2027 window, unless a more recent degree (for example honours or a master's completed from 2022) falls inside it, since the selection page refers to your most recent degree.
  • Final-year student finishing in November 2026 → inside the 2027 window: the window ran to 31 December 2026, after applications had closed in April 2026, so final-year students could apply in March–April of their final year.
  • For the 2028 program DFAT has not published the window. If it moves forward by one year, as the five-year rule suggests, it would run from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2027; that is our assumption, so check the 2028 page when it opens.

Our reading of DFAT's 2027 program rules. DFAT has not yet published the 2028 rules.

Streams: Corporate or Policy

The 18-month program has two streams, and DFAT says you can apply for either the Corporate or the Policy stream. Each graduate completes four placements.

StreamDegrees DFAT namesExample placementsLater overseas roles DFAT mentions
CorporateFinance, accounting, business, commerce, human resources, management, psychology, marketing, communications, data, ICT, engineering, architectureConsular and crisis management, overseas property office, accounting and financial management, HR, diplomatic security, strategic communications, ICT, corporate law, Australian Passport Office, international operationsSecond Secretary and Vice Consul (Corporate), mixed duties
PolicyInternational relations, law, arts, defence and national security, development, economics, social sciences, education, health sciences, public policy, history, journalism, communication, linguistics, humanitarian support, cyber security, STEMBilateral economic and political relations, trade negotiations and economic analysis, development and aid programs, international and cyber security, international law, public diplomacy, multilateral and global issues, strategic communicationsSecond Secretary (policy, trade or development), mixed duties

Worked example 3: choosing your stream

  • Commerce graduate interested in finance and how embassies are run → Corporate: commerce and finance are named for that stream, and its placements include accounting and financial management and overseas property.
  • Economics graduate who wants to work on trade agreements → Policy: economics is named for that stream, and its placements include international trade negotiations and economic analysis.
  • Communications graduate → either: communications appears in both stream lists, and strategic communications placements exist in both. Pick the one whose placements you can best speak to with your own examples.
  • DFAT says experience in either stream puts graduates in a competitive position to apply for overseas roles at the end of the program; it does not promise a posting.

Disciplines and placements as listed on DFAT's Graduate program page, read 1 November 2026.

The selection stages

StageWhat DFAT says
1. EligibilityAustralian citizenship; at least a bachelor's degree, most recent degree not more than 5 years old
2. Online assessmentBehavioural and/or psychometric assessment
3. Video interviewOne-way recording of up to three minutes response time
4. Assessment centreInterview, group activity and written test
5. Referee checksVia an online platform
6. Merit poolCreated after assessment centre outcomes and completed referee checks

DFAT says it looks for graduates who work collaboratively, manage relationships and show humility, drive and accountability, who are adaptable and resilient, and who solve problems through analytical thinking. Its AI guidelines ask you to use your own knowledge and specific examples from your experience, to be transparent and appropriately reference any AI tools or external support used to enhance your responses, and not to use AI tools during the interview or any assessment task; knowingly providing false statements may disqualify you. DFAT says its employees are required to uphold the APS Values (impartial, committed to service, accountable, respectful, ethical, and stewardship), and DFAT adds its own values of achievement, leadership and accountability, valuing people, and collaboration (APS and DFAT values). RecruitAbility applies: if you choose to apply under it, declare a disability and meet the minimum requirements, you are invited to further assessment (RecruitAbility).

For the one-way recorded stage, our DFAT video interview guide has a timed three-minute practice box.

How hard is it to get in? (The acceptance rate question)

We found no official acceptance rate. We checked its Graduate program and selection process pages and the "Managing our people" sections of its 2024–25 and 2025–26 annual reports: we found no figure for the number of graduate applications, offers or the size of the intake, so no official acceptance rate can be calculated. Treat any percentage you see on a forum or a jobs site as unverified unless it links to an official DFAT source.

What the official pages do show is how many separate hurdles there are: each of the online assessment, the video interview and the assessment centre is a separate stage, followed by referee checks and a merit pool, and an offer is conditional on an NV2 clearance that can take months. The part you control is preparation for each stage and having your clearance paperwork in order.

Other ways into DFAT

If you are not yet eligible, DFAT's Other opportunities page lists cadet programs for students completing a bachelor's degree, which it says are open to First Nations students and to students of an accounting or finance related discipline with at least 12 months of study remaining in the year they start. Cadets work a minimum of 600 hours a year across two rotations, have up to 36 months to finish, and move into a permanent job at DFAT on completion; Finance Stream cadets work in Canberra, First Nations cadets in Canberra or a state capital city. DFAT does not offer internships in Canberra, though some overseas posts run local internships. It also points to the New Colombo Plan for undergraduates and to programs at its portfolio agencies (Austrade, Tourism Australia and ACIAR). Experienced applicants can watch DFAT's current opportunities.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for the round to open before preparing. Applications for the 2027 program were open only from March to April 2026.
  • Assuming last year's degree window still applies. The 2027 program needed a degree completed between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2026; check the 2028 page.
  • Applying without Australian citizenship at the time of application. It is a legal requirement for DFAT employees.
  • Underestimating the clearance. NV2 can take months, and an overseas candidate may need to travel at their own expense for the security interview.
  • Picking a stream by prestige rather than fit. The streams name different disciplines and placements, and your examples should match the stream.
  • Using AI tools in the assessments or interviews. DFAT says they are not to be used there, and knowingly providing false statements may disqualify you from employment.
  • Planning around an "acceptance rate" from a forum. We found no official figure.

For the 2027 program: APS 4 at $84,115 plus 15.4% superannuation on commencement, and APS 5 at $92,753 plus 15.4% super on completion of the 18-month program. The 2028 salary has not been published yet.

What is the DFAT Graduate Program acceptance rate?

We found no official figure. We found no application or offer counts on DFAT's graduate pages or in the people sections of its 2024–25 and 2025–26 annual reports, so treat percentages quoted elsewhere as unverified.

What are the eligibility requirements for the DFAT Graduate Program?

Australian citizenship at the time of application and, for the 2027 program, at least a bachelor's degree completed between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2026. You also need to obtain a Negative Vetting Level 2 security clearance before starting.

Can I apply to the DFAT Graduate Program in my final year?

On our reading, yes for the 2027 program: the degree window ran to 31 December 2026, after applications closed in April 2026, so students completing their degree by the end of 2026 could apply. Check the 2028 window when it is published.

All graduate roles are in Canberra. DFAT offers a relocation package if you move to Canberra from within Australia.

What are the stages of the DFAT graduate selection process?

Eligibility, an online behavioural and/or psychometric assessment, a one-way video interview (DFAT: "one-way recording of up to three minutes response time"), an assessment centre with an interview, group activity and written test, referee checks, and then a merit pool.

How long is the DFAT Graduate Program?

18 months, with four placements in either the Corporate or the Policy stream, as an ongoing full-time APS employee.

Can I apply from overseas?

Yes. DFAT says you can apply while overseas, but the graduate page says the security interview will be conducted in Australia and that you return at your own expense if you are overseas, while DFAT's general eligibility page says it may be by videoconference or in Canberra, assessed case by case.

Does DFAT offer internships?

DFAT does not offer internships in Canberra. Some overseas posts run local internships, and DFAT runs cadet programs, which it says are open to First Nations students and to students of accounting or finance related disciplines.
