CUET UG Subject Combination for DU: Which 5 Papers, Programme by Programme

CUET (UG) lets you pick up to five papers from 37, and NTA says you may choose them “irrespective of the subjects opted in class XII”. That sentence is true for the exam and misleading for admission. The University of Delhi — one of the biggest users of CUET scores — accepts only particular combinations of papers for each programme, computes your merit from the best combination you have, and requires you to take CUET in the subjects you studied in Class XII. Pick five papers without checking those rules and a strong score can still leave you ineligible for the programme you wanted.

The pattern behind the table is simple once you see it. Most humanities and commerce programmes rank you on four papers: at least one language, plus domain subjects, with a few programmes naming a subject you must have. Several science programmes are different — B.Sc. (Hons.) Electronics, for instance, ranks on three science papers and only requires you to have taken a language. Economics (Hons.) is the strictest — Mathematics is compulsory and there is no second combination. B.Com. (Hons.) accepts Mathematics or Accountancy. Of the programmes in this table, BMS is the only one that requires the General Aptitude Test (B.A. Programme and some B.Voc combinations can use it), and it has just one combination, so a BMS aspirant has little room: language, Mathematics, one domain subject and GAT use four of the five slots.

Two consequences. A student who studied Sanskrit in Class XII and takes the CUET Sanskrit paper has, for DU, taken a language, not a domain subject — so it cannot be one of the “any 3 List B” papers. And the language requirement is not just “any language”: DU asks for the language you studied in Class XII.

NTA’s bulletin lets you choose papers without reference to Class XII. DU’s bulletin narrows that: you must take CUET in the subjects you are appearing in or have passed in Class XII, and if one of your Class XII subjects has no CUET paper, you replace it with a CUET subject whose syllabus matches it by at least 50%. For minimum eligibility DU wants Class XII from a single recognised board; for mapping subjects, marksheets of more than one board may be used. Each programme adds its own Class XII conditions on top (Mathematics as a B.A. Programme core discipline needs Maths passed in Class XII, for instance).

Class XII marks do not decide your rank at DU, but they decide ties — and at the top colleges, where hundreds of candidates cluster within a few points, ties are not rare.

Most candidates use all five slots, and for DU that is usually right: four papers make the merit combination and the fifth is insurance — a second language that opens combination II, Mathematics that opens Economics and B.Com., or GAT that opens BMS and B.A. Programme combination III. A fifth paper you will not use in any combination costs ₹400 (general) and a shift of your exam week for nothing. Run your five through the checker above before you register.

In 2026 NTA also opened a subject-change window (17–19 April) for candidates who had already paid, explicitly “to make them eligible for admission in their desired University”. We found no such window among the 2025 notices (2025 had only the March correction window). Whether it returns in 2027 is not known — decide your combination at registration and treat any later window as a bonus.
