Growing With Age: The Teenage Years

Adolescence is the stage of life between childhood and adulthood, generally from ages 10 to 19. It is during this period that the body and mind undergo rapid growth and development.

  • Physical Growth: Adolescents experience a growth spurt in height and weight.
  • Changes in Body Structure: Boys develop broader shoulders and chest muscles while girls develop breasts and wider hips.
  • Changes in Voice: Boys’ voice deepen due to growth of vocal cords and the Adam’s apple becomes prominent; girls’ voices change slightly.
  • Appearance of Hair: Hair starts growing in the armpits and pubic area for both boys and girls; boys may develop facial and chest hair.
  • Skin Changes: Increased oil secretion may cause pimples and acne on the face.

Secondary Sexual Characteristics and Puberty

These are traits that develop during adolescence to distinguish males from females but are not directly related to reproduction.

  • Boys: Facial hair, deepening of voice, broader chest, and muscular build.
  • Girls: Breast development, rounded body shape, and beginning of menstrual cycles.
  • Puberty: The stage when body develops reproductive capacity.

Menstrual Cycle in Girls

  • The menstrual cycle generally lasts 28–30 days but can vary from 21 to 35 days.
  • Menstruation is the periodic discharge of blood lasting 3 to 7 days.
  • Proper menstrual hygiene is essential to maintain health and comfort during this stage.

Emotional and Behavioural Changes

  • Mood swings: Adolescents often experience sudden changes in emotions.
  • Increased sensitivity: Strong feelings like excitement, anger, and compassion occur.
  • Social awareness: Greater interest in social and peer relationships develops.

Healthy Lifestyle for Adolescents

  • Nutrition: Balanced diet rich in proteins, calcium, and iron supports growth.
  • Personal Hygiene: Regular bathing and menstrual hygiene help prevent infections.
  • Physical Activities: Regular exercise and sports enhance physical and mental health.
  • Avoiding Harmful Substances: Saying no to tobacco, alcohol and drugs is crucial.
