Checked 3 October 2026. The papers and keys (2022 to 2026) are fixed, so these counts change only if we reclassify a question; our placement of the contested questions is shown below. They describe past papers. GATE publishes no official weightage, and the 2027 paper, set by IIT Madras, can differ.
GATE publishes no weightage for Biotechnology. Every "GATE BT weightage" table online is therefore somebody's estimate, and most do not say how it was made. Ours is a count. We took the five most recent official question papers (2022 to 2026) and answer keys, placed all 275 subject questions into the syllabus subsection that each tests, and added up the marks from the key.
Then we did the thing no weightage table we found does: we laid the 2027 syllabus over the count. IIT Madras removed three headings that past papers drew on heavily, so the old "important topics" lists are partly out of date before the exam is held.
Where other pages get this wrong
More than a fifth of the marks in the 2026 paper (19 of 85, 22.4%) came from topics the 2027 syllabus no longer names.
Commonly published instead: Weightage lists that still rank "mass and heat transfer, thermodynamics and stoichiometry" among the high-scoring areas for GATE 2027, and syllabus summaries that say the 2027 revision only "added" topics.
In the 2026 paper we filed 19 of 85 subject marks under material and energy balances, thermodynamics and transport processes, the three headings missing from the 2027 BT syllabus. Over five papers the count is 63 of 425 marks (14.8%). Eleven contested questions move that total between 53 and 74 depending on where you file them; they are printed below.
Counts are ours, from the official papers and keys.
How the paper is built
Every GATE BT paper has 65 questions for 100 marks in three hours. The first ten questions are General Aptitude (15 marks). The other 55 are the subject part, worth 85 marks, and the brochure says 13 of those 85 are Engineering Mathematics (its mark table prints this as 13 Engineering Mathematics plus 72 other subject marks). The 2027 syllabus has six sections: Engineering Mathematics; General Biology; Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Biology; Fundamentals of Biological Engineering; Plant, Animal and Microbial Biotechnology; and Recombinant DNA Technology and Other Tools.
There are no sectional papers or choices in BT. You answer everything, so the weightage tells you where to spend preparation time, not what to skip.

| 12 | 8 | 11 | 13 | 19 | Topics the 2027 syllabus no longer names (material and energy balances and growth stoichiometry, thermodynamics, transport processes) | 63 | 14.8% |
Marks from the official answer keys, classified by us question by question. Each bar is 85 marks. Section names follow the 2027 syllabus.
The section totals are the least contested part of the count: even if a handful of questions moved between neighbouring sections, the broad shape would stand. General Biology is the largest section at 80 marks (18.8%), Engineering Mathematics is next at 71 (16.7%), then Fundamentals of Biological Engineering at 68 and Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology at 67. The two biotechnology sections together, 76 marks across five papers, are smaller than General Biology alone.
Amber bars are topics the 2027 syllabus no longer names. The 14 largest of 26 subsections are shown; every subsection is in the table that follows.

Four things the count shows
Patterns worth planning around
- Bioreaction engineering is the single largest subsection. 42 marks in five papers: chemostat and fed-batch balances with Monod growth (2023 Q48, Q53; 2024 Q53, Q60; 2025 Q62; 2026 Q55, Q56, Q61), reactor design, and the effectiveness factor of immobilised enzymes (2022 Q48; 2025 Q54). It is numerical, and it is still in the 2027 syllabus.
- Process control appears in every paper. 2, 2, 1, 4 and 3 marks: first-order response, transfer functions and proportional controllers (2022 Q41, 2023 Q64, 2024 Q12, 2025 Q42 and Q43, 2026 Q15 and Q36). It is the cheapest dependable mark in the paper.
- Biochemistry swings the most. 7, 4, 4, 14 and 9 marks; 2025 had nine questions on it (coenzymes, epimers, glycolysis regulation, mitochondrial inhibitors, optical activity). Enzyme kinetics in some form appears every year (2022 Q19, Q50; 2023 Q54; 2024 Q44; 2025 Q32; 2026 Q21, Q32, Q35).
- Tools questions are shrinking. Recombinant DNA technology and the three tools subsections (molecular, analytical, computational) gave 13 marks in 2023 and 3 in 2026. Sequence-analysis questions come up almost yearly (2022 Q24, Q44; 2023 Q26, Q27, Q51; 2025 Q47; 2026 Q30) and are cheap marks.
Question references are year and question number in the official paper, so you can check each.
Engineering Mathematics: 13 marks on paper, 13 to 17 in practice
The brochure says Engineering Mathematics carries 13 marks in BT. We counted every question that is solved by a technique the Engineering Mathematics syllabus names (calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, probability and statistics, numerical methods, plus coordinate geometry and algebra that the syllabus does not itemise).
| Year | Linear algebra | Calculus | Differential equations | Probability and statistics | Numerical methods | Other (geometry, algebra) | Total (our count) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 13 |
| 2023 | 2 | 4 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 4 | 13 |
| 2024 | 3 | 5 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 15 |
| 2025 | 3 | 5 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 13 |
| 2026 | 3 | 4 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 17 |
Three of five papers match 13 exactly (2022, 2023, 2025). 2024 has 15, because a 2-mark question on the volume of a leaking fermenter reduces to an integral, and 2026 has 17, including two 2-mark questions on straight lines and a circle that no syllabus line covers and a 2-mark cooling problem that is solved as a first-order differential equation. If you file those bioprocess-context questions elsewhere the count comes back toward 13, which is why we print the table rather than a single figure. Either way, mathematics is a sixth of the paper and well within reach for a candidate who practises it.
What the 2027 syllabus does to the count
The 2026 syllabus had two engineering sections. Section 4, Fundamentals of Biological Engineering, listed Engineering Principles Applied to Biological Systems (material and energy balances, recycle, bypass and purge, stoichiometry of growth, degree of reduction, theoretical oxygen demand), Classical Thermodynamics and Bioenergetics, and Transport Processes (fluid flow, mixing, oxygen transfer and kLa, heat transfer, LMTD, heat exchangers). Section 5 was Bioprocess Engineering and Process Biotechnology. The 2027 syllabus has one engineering section, which keeps Bioreaction Engineering and Upstream and Downstream Processing, and the three headings above are not in it.
| Year | Material and energy balances, growth stoichiometry | Thermodynamics and bioenergetics | Transport processes | Total marks | Share of the 85 subject marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 12 | 14.1% |
| 2023 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 8 | 9.4% |
| 2024 | 1 | 3 | 7 | 11 | 12.9% |
| 2025 | 3 | 5 | 5 | 13 | 15.3% |
| 2026 | 6 | 3 | 10 | 19 | 22.4% |
Our counts. The 2026 paper took 19 marks from these three headings: degree of reduction and growth stoichiometry (Q40, Q57, Q62), kLa, mixing, fluid flow and viscosity (Q44 to Q47, Q65), and Gibbs energy (Q34, Q50). If the 2027 paper follows its syllabus, those marks move elsewhere. If it does not, a candidate who dropped the topics loses them. We cannot tell which, and neither can anyone else until the paper is held.
The eleven contested placements behind the 53 to 74 range
- 2022 Q28 (batch growth yield): bioreaction, or growth stoichiometry. 2022 Q57 (metabolic flux balance): computational tools, or material balances.
- 2023 Q47 (Arrhenius ratio of rate constants): bioreaction, or thermodynamics. 2023 Q48 (oxygen transfer rate in a chemostat from yield): bioreaction, or stoichiometry.
- 2024 Q61 (scale-up at constant shear): bioreaction, or transport. 2025 Q44 (Rushton impeller power): transport, or bioreaction. 2025 Q65 (coupled reactions, free energy of ATP hydrolysis): thermodynamics, or biochemistry.
- 2026 Q44 (dissolved oxygen reads zero): transport, or bioreaction. 2026 Q50 (delta G and rate of an enzyme reaction): thermodynamics, or biochemistry. 2026 Q54 (cooling of a heat exchanger, solved as a differential equation): mathematics, or transport. 2026 Q65 (packed-bed void fraction): transport, or bioreaction.
Fifty of the 275 questions had a second defensible home (82 of 425 marks); these eleven are the ones that touch the removed headings. The full list of every question and every alternative is in the index below.
Oxygen transfer (kLa) is the clearest example for your preparation: the 2026 syllabus names it under Transport Processes, and the 2027 syllabus no longer does. Bioreaction Engineering still names "diffusion effects", the Thiele modulus and the effectiveness factor, which the papers have also asked (2022 Q48, 2025 Q54). Treat the removed headings as lower priority rather than as zero, and finish the named topics first.
Question types by year
| Year | MCQ / MSQ / NAT questions | Marks from MCQ / MSQ / NAT |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 27 / 8 / 20 | 38 / 16 / 31 |
| 2023 | 22 / 7 / 26 | 25 / 14 / 46 |
| 2024 | 30 / 10 / 15 | 38 / 20 / 27 |
| 2025 | 23 / 15 / 17 | 36 / 23 / 26 |
| 2026 | 21 / 14 / 20 | 26 / 24 / 35 |
From the official answer keys, subject part only (55 questions, 85 marks). MSQ and NAT carry no negative marking, so in 2026 34 of 55 subject questions could be attempted without losing marks for a wrong answer. A numerical answer must fall in the accepted range and a multiple-select question must have exactly the right options, so a wrong attempt still earns nothing.
Study-order tool
If the tool does not load, the section table above carries the averages: General Biology 16.0 marks a paper, Engineering Mathematics 14.2, Fundamentals of Biological Engineering 13.6, Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology 13.4, Recombinant DNA and Tools 8.4, Plant, Animal and Microbial Biotechnology 6.8, and 12.6 marks from the topics the 2027 syllabus no longer names.
Every question, indexed by subsection
This is the index behind the counts: every subject question in the five papers, filed under one subsection. An asterisk marks a question with a second defensible home. Questions 1 to 10 in each paper are General Aptitude and are not counted. Open the five PDFs and work through one row at a time for a by-topic pass.

How we counted, so you can check it
- Every question from 11 to 65 in the paper was read and placed in the one syllabus subsection whose wording covers the concept it tests; marks come from the official answer key.
- A question that is a calculation wrapped in a bioprocess story is filed by the technique that solves it (a cooling curve solved as a differential equation is mathematics). Where a second subsection fits, the alternative is recorded.
- In the 2022 PDF text layer the stems of Q33 to Q35 run together; we separated them by their own wording. The 2023 paper prints the thirtieth question as "Q.20" a second time; its answer key lists it as question 30, and we count it as 30.
- We counted 2022 to 2026. The 2021 paper is only a scanned image on the official site and is not counted.
Practise it, don't just read it
The quizzes follow the same split: enzyme kinetics, Monod growth, Mendelian genetics, flux balance, and the four tools topics. Use the weightage above to decide which to take first.
The ProSyllabus GATE BT library has nine topic quizzes of ten questions each: Michaelis Menten Enzyme Kinetics Fundamentals, Mendelian Inheritance Patterns Fundamentals, Monod Microbial Growth Model Fundamentals, Oxygen Transfer in Bioreactors Advanced Challenge, Metabolic Flux Balance Analysis Advanced Challenge, and the Molecular Tools, Analytical Tools, Computational Tools and Recombinant DNA Technology practice quizzes. Note that oxygen transfer (kLa) sits under the Transport Processes heading of the 2026 syllabus, which the 2027 syllabus no longer lists; the other eight map onto topics that are still named.
