Checked 3 October 2026. From the official 2021 guidelines (Delhi DoE circular) and the 2023 guidelines published by SAI. No guidelines have been issued since 2023; a new edition could change any of this.

The Fit India Quiz is a school quiz on sport and fitness run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through the Fit India Mission and the Sports Authority of India. It has three stages: an individual online preliminary round run by the National Testing Agency (NTA), State/UT rounds for the best schools in each State, and a national round recorded for television. This guide is about the first stage, the only one most students ever sit. The facts come from the two official rulebooks we could find, the 2021 and 2023 guidelines, and the gaps between them are shown rather than smoothed over.

Status on 3 October 2026

The last Fit India Quiz we can find is the 2023 edition (the third): its preliminary round ran on 21–22 December 2023 and its State rounds on 26 March – 10 April 2024. No 2024, 2025 or 2026 edition has been announced. The official quiz page still shows the 2023 text, the NTA registration portal does not respond, and National Sports Day 2026 (28–30 August) ran without the quiz. Any “2026 dates” you see elsewhere are guesses.

The prelim at a glance, 2021 against 2023

Two sets of official guidelines exist. The 2021 set was circulated to Delhi schools by the Directorate of Education in June 2021. The 2023 set survives as an annexure to a Sports Authority of India tender published on 1 August 2024, because the copy that used to sit on the Fit India website now returns an empty file. The 2022 guidelines were not found anywhere. What changed between the two is mostly the device and the clock.

Sources: 2021 and 2023 guidelines; the fee waiver is from PIB, 14 September 2021.

The 2021 guidelines planned a proctored test on a computer on 4 September 2021. That is not what happened: the 2021 prelim was reported as held on 15–16 November 2021, and how it was delivered is not stated in any official document we found. From the 2022 edition the prelim moved to an Android app that students could use from home or school, and the 2023 rules make that explicit: the app is Android only. A family with only an iPhone needs to borrow an Android phone.

Where other pages get this wrong

The prelim has 60 questions, not 75, and it runs on an Android phone, not at an exam centre.

Commonly published instead: Our own older guide on this site says “75 questions”; our parents’ page talks about admit cards, pens and arriving early at a centre.

Both official rulebooks say 60 multiple-choice questions at +4 and −1. From 2022 the test was taken on an Android app from home or school; there is no centre and nothing to carry.

Who can sit it

Students do not enter on their own. Schools enter them. The 2023 rules say the school runs the first round of selection internally, registers its chosen students and pays the fee. A 2022 NTA notice, as summarised by ALLEN, adds that “individual candidates cannot apply” and that students from Class 1 to 12 of any board were eligible. The 2023 rules say there is “no age limit”, but that the questions are pitched so that students of Class 8 and above can answer them. In practice that means a school can enter a Class 6 student, but the paper is written for older children.

One school-hosted copy of the 2023 rules reads “Schools can register no more than 2 students. There is no upper limit”, which contradicts itself. The copy published by SAI reads “more than 2”, so the school copy has a typo. Schools can enter as many students as they like, with 2 as the floor.

Marking, and when to guess

The prelim uses +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one. That is gentler than it looks. The rules do not say how many options each question has; assuming four, a blind guess is right one time in four and wrong three times in four, so on average it earns 4 × 0.25 − 1 × 0.75 = +0.25 marks. If you can rule out even one option, the expected gain rises sharply. The table below is our arithmetic on that assumption, not an official figure.

Options you can rule outChance of being rightChance of being wrongExpected marks per guess (our arithmetic)
None (pure guess among 4)1 in 4 (0.25)3 in 4 (0.75)+0.25
One (guess among 3)1 in 32 in 3+0.67
Two (guess between 2)1 in 21 in 2+1.5
Leave it blank——0

Because the expected value is positive even for a blind guess, a student chasing a high rank should normally answer every question they have time for. The exception is a student who only needs a participation certificate, which everyone who takes part receives regardless of score. Remember that the 2023 prelim gave 30 minutes for 60 questions, which is 30 seconds a question, so time is the real constraint, not the penalty.

The tie-break: the younger student wins

Both rulebooks break a tie in the same way: where two students have the same score, the younger one is ranked higher. There is no second criterion such as time taken or accuracy in a section. It matters because the merit list is used to allocate a small number of places per State, and in a large State many students can share a score near the boundary.

How a prelim score turns into a school place

There is no pass mark and no cut-off. After the prelim NTA ranks students, and places in the State round are given to schools, walking down the merit list. The 2023 rule is precise: if two students on the list are from the same school, the next student’s school takes the place. So each place is a school, and one strong student is enough to carry a school into the State round. How many places a State gets depends on how many schools from that State took part.

Sources: 2021 and 2023 guidelines. The 2023 slab halved the places for small States: a State with 500 or fewer participating schools sent 8 under the 2021 rule and only 4 under the 2023 rule.

Official 2023 guidelines. The 2022 slab was not published; the 2022 team counts (4, 8, 16 or 32 per State) fit this same slab, which is our inference.

Once a school qualifies it needs a second student. The rules call this second student the Quiz Partner: the school nominates another of its prelim takers, and if two of its students both made the merit list, those two form the team. It is not a company or a sponsor. The school then enters the team’s details and bank details on the Fit India site, because prize money is paid to the school and to the students.

How hard is it to get through?

The only edition with enough published numbers to work this out is 2022. The table is our arithmetic on official and reported counts; it tells you the scale, not your own chances, which depend on your State.

Prelim takers reaching the State round (our arithmetic)0.67%418 ÷ 61,981
Schools reaching the State round (our arithmetic)2.1%348 ÷ 16,702

Two things stand out. First, roughly two in three registered students never took the prelim, so a school that registers students and then makes sure they actually sit the test is already ahead. Second, very few prelim takers reached the State round. In 2022 that was 0.67% of prelim takers. That is why schools with a sports-quiz culture keep reappearing in the lists of State champions.

Languages

The prelim is offered in 13 languages in both rulebooks: English, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Assamese, Bengali, Punjabi and Urdu. If a translated question differs from the original, the 2023 rules say the English version prevails; the 2021 rules said English or Hindi. The later rounds are hosted by quiz masters, and the rules do not promise the same language choice there.

What the questions look like

No official question paper or answer key has ever been published. NTA offered a mock test inside its app before the 2023 prelim, reported for 15–17 December 2023 from 9 am to 6 pm. The 2021 guidelines say the prelim included image-based questions. Themes are listed in the guidelines but no weightage is given, so any page that tells you a theme “carries significant weightage” is inventing it. Our syllabus guide in this series sets out the six official themes line by line.

Practise it, don't just read it

Our 10 topic quizzes are not past papers — none exist — but they drill the Olympic, hockey, fitness and yoga material the official themes name, at the same one-mark-per-question speed.

The ProSyllabus Fit India Quiz library has 10 topic quizzes of 10 questions each: Olympic symbols and motto, Olympic history and origins, major Indian sports awards, Indian hockey legends, Commonwealth Games host cities, the FIFA World Cup and football, famous stadiums and venues, sporting equipment and field dimensions, basic fitness and nutrition, and yoga and physical wellness.

A practical plan for a school coordinator

Before the prelim

  • Register at least 2 students, and more if you can: every extra student is another chance at the one place your school needs.
  • Check each student has an Android phone to use. The 2023 app did not run on iOS.
  • Run the NTA mock test on the actual phone the student will use, so the app is installed and working before the real day.
  • Tell students blank answers score zero and a wrong answer costs one mark, so a sensible guess is worth making.
  • Keep a note of each student’s date of birth: ties are broken in favour of the younger student.

Based on the 2021 and 2023 guidelines; a new edition may change the rules.
