Checked 26 October 2026. CSMLS says it may change fees without notice and posts policy changes on its Certification pages. The dates, fees and rules here were read on csmls.org and in the October 2026 General MLT handbook on 26 October 2026.
CSMLS (the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science) runs certification exams for General Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT) and Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA). For 2027 it has published three exam sessions: 22 to 26 February, 21 to 26 June and 25 to 29 October. Registration for the February 2027 session opened on 15 October 2026 and closes on 30 November 2026; late registration runs 1 to 15 December 2026 at a higher fee.
Two things changed in 2026. CSMLS says that as of 1 March 2026 its General MLT exam is written only in the province of Alberta: the October 2026 handbook says all General MLT exams must be written in Alberta, and the dates page marks the General MLT sessions "Open to Alberta Residents only" (the handbook also lets CMLTA give permission to some candidates who live elsewhere). And CSMLS has set an end date: the October 2028 session is the last General MLT exam, and the handbook says CSMLS General MLT exam services will be discontinued on 1 January 2029. The MLA exam stays open across Canada.
ProSyllabus is an independent study site. It is not part of CSMLS (the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science), CMLTA or CAMLPR, and nothing here is the official exam. Every date, fee and rule on this page is taken from the official pages listed at the foot of the page.

Who can sit the CSMLS General MLT exam now
The October 2026 handbook describes CSMLS as the Alberta certifying body for General MLTs, providing exam services on behalf of the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA). The Exam Eligibility page lists two ways to become eligible for the first time:
| Route | What CSMLS says |
|---|---|
| EQual accredited Alberta program | Complete an EQual accredited Alberta medical laboratory program and reside in Alberta. The handbook adds that you must finish all program requirements at least two weeks before the first day of the session and no more than 12 months before the first day of the session month. |
| Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) | Complete the CSMLS PLA and reside in Alberta, holding an Eligibility Statement that has not expired. The PLA page says 31 December 2026 is the last day to submit a new General MLT PLA application; none will be accepted from 1 January 2027. |
The handbook also lists candidates given permission by CMLTA to attend a CSMLS General MLT session, for example program graduates or internationally educated technologists who live outside Alberta. It says all General MLT exams must be written in Alberta whatever the testing method, and that non-residents of Canada can only write at a test centre in Alberta.
If you live in another province
For the competencies behind MLT certification exams outside Alberta, the CSMLS Competency Profiles page sends candidates to CAMLPR, which runs fields-of-practice exams. CAMLPR recommends its MLT General bundle (Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Microbiology and Histology) for the widest employability, with 60 questions in 60 minutes for each field. Check with your provincial regulator and camlpr.org for your route and dates.

From the October 2026 session, General MLT candidates have four attempts in two cycles. The first cycle is one attempt, to be taken within 12 months of becoming eligible. After an unsuccessful first attempt you have three more, to be taken within three years or by the October 2028 session, whichever comes first.
| Milestone | Rule |
|---|---|
| First attempt | Within 12 months of initial eligibility; candidates are expected to attend the first available session |
| Attempts two to four | Within three years of the first unsuccessful attempt, or by October 2028, whichever comes first |
| Last day to register for the last General MLT exam | 31 August 2028 |
| Last General MLT exam session | October 2028 |
| CSMLS General MLT exam services end | 1 January 2029 |
A missed appointment counts against you: CSMLS says a candidate who arrives more than 30 minutes late or misses the appointment is a no-show, forfeits the exam fee and loses an attempt, which is counted as a failed attempt.
After you register: booking your seat
| Step | Detail |
|---|---|
| Confirmation | CSMLS emails an Exam Registration Confirmation with your eligibility ID and a link to schedule with Prometric. The handbook says you may have to wait up to four days before you can schedule. |
| Choose how you test | In-person testing (IPT) at a test centre or remote proctored testing (RPT). Candidates who are not residents of Canada must book IPT at a test centre in Alberta. |
| Book early | Schedule your seat no later than 30 days before the session to guarantee a spot; CSMLS cannot guarantee seats after that. |
| Exam day | Bring government-issued photo ID and arrive 30 minutes early (or launch a remote exam 30 minutes early). The exam is computer-based and recorded. |
When results come out
CSMLS says results are released online within 45 days of the exam date, after its own checks and an analysis by a third-party psychometrician. The 2027 "results released by" dates are 12 April, 10 August and 13 December. You get an email with a link to the results portal; CSMLS does not give results by phone. A pass shows the Angoff score; an unsuccessful candidate sees their own score and the Angoff score, with their performance in the categories of the exam blueprint.
CSMLS, After the Exam: the release process adds up to a maximum of 45 days. Steps grouped by ProSyllabus.
Preparing for the February 2027 session
The exam is 210 multiple-choice questions in 3.5 hours across Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Hematology, Histotechnology and Transfusion Science. Our guide to the CSMLS MLT exam format and blueprint explains how the questions are weighted. For timed practice, ProSyllabus sells an independent CSMLS MLT practice exam: a 100-question mock weighted to the blueprint and six discipline sets, with your score in each blueprint category labelled with its official weight. Our own questions, not the CSMLS exam.
