ESAT Preparation: Official Materials, Past Papers and a Study Plan
Preparing for the ESAT with UAT-UK's free material — specification, guides, specimen and practice tests, the ENGAA/NSAA archive — with an October sprint, a January plan and a tracker.

UAT-UK publishes no past ESAT papers, and sharing live test content is prohibited. What UAT-UK does publish is free: the content specification, a long ESAT Guide for each module, one specimen test and one practice test per module in the real Pearson test player, and the ENGAA and NSAA Section 1 papers from 2016 to 2023, which UAT-UK says "contain questions of the type found in the ESAT". This guide shows how to use them — for a three-week sprint to October or a longer run to January.

These are long, so do not read them cover to cover. Use the specification to find your gaps, then read only those chapters and do their exercises. The Maths 1 guide deserves the most attention because every candidate sits Maths 1 and every other module assumes it; UAT-UK's own warning is that the guides are "not a comprehensive textbook".

Seventeen days to October

Our sprint: 25 September to a 12 October sitting is 17 days (a 16 October sitting gives you four more). If you sit four modules, add a day to each block. Days 3–8 are where the marks are gained.

Our plan for the 4–8 January sitting. Remember school exams: January suits applicants whose October clashes with them — unless they are applying to Oxbridge (Cambridge mature colleges with a January deadline and Oxford's Astrophoria Foundation Year are the exceptions).

For students on an Indian syllabus
UAT-UK publishes no mapping to CBSE, ISC or JEE, so treat what follows as our own reading of the specification. Maths 1 and most of Physics and Chemistry sit comfortably within Class 10–11 work, but the ESAT asks for them fast and without a calculator, which JEE-style practice does not always train. Maths 2 includes calculus, logarithms and trigonometry that some students meet only late in Class 11 or in Class 12, so check its topic list early. Biology leans on cell biology, genetics and physiology. For many students the bigger adjustment is speed rather than content: about a minute and a half a question, every question answered.

Mistakes to avoid
- Booking a real test as practice — UAT-UK strongly discourages paying to sit early, and you may sit once per cycle.
- Using a calculator in practice: the test has none.
- Leaving blanks: there is no negative marking.
- Practising modules you will not sit — fix your modules first.
- Sharing or seeking real test content: it is prohibited.
Practise it, don't just read it
Short timed topic quizzes are an easy daily habit alongside the official materials.
The ProSyllabus ESAT library has topic quizzes for Maths 1 (algebra, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability), Maths 2 (functions and calculus), Physics (mechanics, electricity, waves), Chemistry and Biology — the first one is free.
Are there ESAT past papers?
No. UAT-UK publishes no past ESAT papers. It offers specimen and practice tests per module and the ENGAA and NSAA Section 1 papers from 2016 to 2023.
Are ENGAA and NSAA papers useful for the ESAT?
Yes, as extra practice. UAT-UK says they contain questions of the type found in the ESAT and marks the questions that are outside the ESAT specification.
Where can I find the ESAT practice test?
In the Pearson VUE test player, linked from UAT-UK's Prepare page and Pearson's UAT-UK page — one specimen and one practice test per module.
How long should I prepare for the ESAT?
Three weeks of focused, timed practice can make a real difference for October; for January, about twelve weeks allows a full pass through the specification.
Is the ESAT syllabus the same as JEE?
No official mapping exists. Much of the content overlaps Class 10–11 work, but the ESAT demands speed without a calculator, and Maths 2 includes calculus some students meet later.
Do I need coaching for the ESAT?
UAT-UK says it does not recommend or endorse any course; its own guides and tests are free.
Do practice tests give an ESAT score?
No. UAT-UK does not publish scaled scores for practice papers.
Can I use a PAT past paper for the ESAT?
Oxford describes PAT papers as useful for interview preparation and warns the ESAT's syllabus and difficulty differ from the PAT, so prefer the official ESAT and ENGAA/NSAA material.
Is JEE preparation enough for the ESAT?
It covers much of the content, but the ESAT needs speed without a calculator and has its own specification; practise with the official specimen and practice tests.
How many hours a week should I study for the ESAT?
For an October sprint, 10–15 hours a week of timed practice is realistic alongside school; for January, 8–10 hours a week over twelve weeks.
Which official ESAT guide should I read first?
The Maths 1 guide, because every candidate sits Maths 1 and every other module assumes it; then the guides for your two other modules.
Are the ESAT guides free?
Yes. UAT-UK publishes the specification, the guides and the specimen and practice tests free of charge.
How do I practise without a calculator?
Do every practice set with pen and paper only: fractions, surds, standard form and estimation. The ESAT allows no calculator.
What should I do in the last week before the ESAT?
No new topics: one practice test per module under time, light review of your error log, and checking your ID, booking and route.
