AFCAT 2027 Age Limit by Date of Birth, Eligibility, Degrees (No 60% Rule)

Checked 25 September 2026. From the AFCAT 02/2026 notification (para 5) compared with 01/2026 and 01/2025. The 01/2027 notification may change these rules again; read it before applying.

The biggest change in recent AFCAT notifications is one most guides have missed. Up to the 01/2026 cycle, the Air Force required 60% in graduation and 50% each in Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 for most branches. The 02/2026 notification drops every percentage: its eligibility clauses ask only that you have passed the required subjects and degree. This guide sets out the current rules branch by branch and shows what changed.

20–24
age for Flying (up to 26 with a DGCA CPL)
20–26
age for Ground Duty
No % bar
in the 02/2026 eligibility clauses
Unmarried
at course start; no marriage during training

AFCAT 02/2026 notification, para 5.

Age

Branch02/2026 (as on 1 Jul 2027)01/2026 (as on 1 Jan 2027)
FlyingBorn 2 Jul 2003 – 1 Jul 2007 (20–24)Born 2 Jan 2003 – 1 Jan 2007
Flying with a DGCA Commercial Pilot LicenceBorn 2 Jul 2001 – 1 Jul 2007 (up to 26)Born 2 Jan 2001 – 1 Jan 2007
Ground Duty (Technical and Non-Technical)Born 2 Jul 2001 – 1 Jul 2007 (20–26)Born 2 Jan 2001 – 1 Jan 2007

Age is reckoned on the first day of the course month, so the same birth date can be eligible for one cycle and not the next — 1 January for a 01 cycle, 1 July for a 02 cycle — and the date of birth is taken only from the Class 10 (Matriculation) certificate; no later change is accepted.

Which AFCAT cycles can you still take?

Enter your date of birth as on your Class 10 certificate. The tool applies the age rule from the 02/2026 notification — Flying 20–24, Ground Duty 20–26, reckoned on the first day of the course month — to the next cycles.

Only the 02/2026 row is official. Later rows assume IAF keeps the same rule (age on 1 January or 1 July of the course start); check each new notification.

Educational qualifications (02/2026)

BranchQualification
FlyingPassed Mathematics and Physics at 10+2, and a three-year degree in any discipline, or a four-year BE/BTech, or Sections A and B of AMIE / Aeronautical Society of India

Meteorology10+2 and a BSc with Physics and Mathematics, or a four-year BE/BTech in 22 listed streams

From para 5.3 of the 02/2026 notification, condensed. Only candidates who studied Class 12 in the 10+2 pattern are eligible. Weapon Systems selectees "may have to undergo Flying Training" later.

Where other pages get this wrong

The 02/2026 notification sets no minimum percentage for any AFCAT branch.

Commonly published instead: "AFCAT Flying requires 60% in graduation and 50% in Physics and Maths at 10+2" — quoted for the 2026 and 2027 cycles.

Those bars were in the 01/2026 and 01/2025 notifications. Para 5.3 of the 02/2026 notification asks only that the required subjects and degrees be passed, and the portal's branch page now says "a minimum of passing marks". The application form still collects your percentages, and one leftover form note mentions "less than 50% in Post-Graduation", but the eligibility clauses carry no bar. Check the 01/2027 notification: IAF could restore them.

NCC Special Entry and GATE Score Entry

EntryWho qualifiesWritten exam
NCC Special Entry (Flying)NCC Air Wing Senior Division 'C' certificate obtained within two years before the AFCAT registration date, plus the Flying qualificationsExempt — called straight to AFSB
GATE Score Entry (Technical)BE/BTech in one of the listed engineering disciplines and a qualifying score in one of ten GATE papers, obtained within three years before the course startsExempt — shortlisted on GATE score

From paras 7.17–7.18 of the 02/2026 notification. Neither entry charges the AFCAT fee. The GATE Score Entry is new in 02/2026; Separately from the Flying-only NCC Special Entry, para 10 reserves 10% of Ground Duty (Technical and Non-Technical) vacancies for NCC Air Wing Senior Division 'C' certificate holders.

Final-year students

Final-year students can apply. Under 02/2026 they must have no present backlog and must submit proof of completing their final exams by 30 May 2027, with the likely result date; at the Air Force Selection Board they bring a principal\'s certificate stating college, university, discipline, aggregate percentage and expected result date. The 01/2026 rule also required 60% up to the last declared semester; 02/2026 does not.

Documents that prove eligibility

Keep these ready from the day you apply

  • Class 10 certificate — the only accepted proof of date of birth; it must match what you enter.
  • Class 12 marksheet and certificate showing Physics and Mathematics where your branch needs them.
  • Degree certificate and every semester's marksheet, or, for final-year students, the principal's certificate.
  • CGPA conversion — if your university grades in CGPA, its official conversion to percentage (the form still asks for percentages).
  • NCC 'C' certificate, DGCA CPL, or government NOC where they apply.

Physical standards that decide eligibility

StandardFlyingGround Duty
Minimum height162 cm (men and women)Men 157 cm, women 152 cm
EyesightNo manifest myopia; hypermetropia up to +1.5 DMyopia up to −3.5 D, hypermetropia up to +3.5 D, corrected to 6/6

Selected from Appendix A of the 02/2026 notification; regional height relaxations apply. These are checked at the medical examination, but they decide whether Flying is realistic — worth checking before you rank it first.

Other conditions

Rules that disqualify or restrict

  • Marital status: unmarried at the start of the course; a trainee who marries is terminated and must refund the cost of training.
  • Flying branch: anyone who failed the Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) or PABT before, or was suspended from flying training at the Air Force Academy, is not eligible for Flying.
  • Removed for indiscipline from NDA, IMA, AFA, INA or an OTA, or debarred by the Ministry of Defence: ineligible.
  • Government employees need a no-objection certificate at AFSB.
  • Aadhaar is mandatory for registration.
