Chapter summary

The mass media — television, newspapers, films, magazines, radio, advertisements and the internet — reach very large audiences and are an inseparable part of everyday life. Like any social institution, the media's structure and content are shaped by economic, political and socio-cultural contexts, and their relationship with society is dialectical: society shapes the media and the media influence society. Mass communication requires a formal structural organisation to meet large-scale capital, production and management demands, so the state and the market play major roles, and access to media is unequal (the digital divide). Modern mass media began with Gutenberg's printing press; newspapers helped create what Benedict Anderson called the 'imagined community' of the nation and nurtured anti-colonial public opinion, which the colonial state tried to censor. In independent India, Nehru called on the media to be a watchdog of democracy and a partner in national development; All India Radio and Doordarshan spread development messages, while soap operas like Hum Log combined entertainment with education. The print media grew rather than declined, helped by the Indian-language newspaper revolution and new technologies. Globalisation since the 1990s transformed the media: national markets gave way to a fluid global market, distinct media forms fused, private satellite channels multiplied, and transnational channels localised their content (Hindi programming, regional channels) to reach diverse Indian audiences, while private FM radio expanded entertainment broadcasting.

Extra questions & answers

Why are the media called 'mass' media?

Because they reach mass audiences comprising very large numbers of people, through forms such as television, newspapers, radio, films and the internet.

What is meant by the dialectical relationship between media and society?

Both influence each other: the society in which media are located shapes their nature and role, while the media in turn have a far-reaching influence on society.

Why does mass communication require a formal structural organisation?

Because it must meet large-scale capital, production and management demands, so the state and/or the market play a major role in its structure and functioning.

How did newspapers help the growth of nationalism?

By letting people across a country read the same news, they created a sense of togetherness; Benedict Anderson called the nation thus formed an 'imagined community'.

What role did the nationalist press play under colonialism?

It nurtured and channelised anti-colonial public opinion and opposed oppressive colonial measures, leading the colonial state to impose censorship.

What approach to the media did Nehru advocate in independent India?

That the media should function as a watchdog of democracy and a partner in national development, spreading self-reliance and fighting oppressive social practices.

How did programmes like Hum Log use the entertainment-education strategy?

By deliberately placing educational messages — on gender equality, small families and national integration — within an entertaining soap opera that drew huge audiences.

Why did the print media expand rather than decline despite television and the internet?

Because of rising literacy and migration, the Indian-language newspaper revolution catering to local needs, new printing technologies, and lower prices and multiple editions.

How did globalisation transform the media industry?

National markets gave way to a fluid global market, distinct media forms fused, and private satellite and transnational channels multiplied rapidly since the 1990s.

How did transnational channels adapt to Indian audiences?

Through glocalisation — using Indian languages, broadcasting Hindi and regional programming, and dubbing content — having found that the familiar is more effective in reaching diverse Indian audiences.
