TEA-Occ practice test: count the high tones, find the upright lamps (independent trainer)
Part of the TEA-Occ is heard on audio, and its publisher says it measures selective attention, sustained attention and attentional switching. This trainer is our own set of original exercises: count the high tones while ignoring the low ones, find the lamps pointing straight up, then do both at once. Level 1 is free; there are four levels in all.

Sound on, please
This trainer is partly heard, not seen
Turn your volume up (on an iPhone, turn the silent switch off), then play the two test tones: a high one, then a low one.
How the trainer works
- Turn your sound on and play the test tones: you should hear a high tone, then a low one.
- Listening: a run of tones plays. Count only the high tones and ignore the low ones, then tap your count on the keypad.
- Looking: a panel of lamps appears. Tap every lamp whose pointer points straight up, before the clock runs out. Tap again to take a mark back.
- Both at once: a new panel appears while runs of tones play. Search and count at the same time, then key in each count.
- Nothing is shown on screen when a tone plays: you have to hear it.
What the result tells you
- Correct counts: the runs of tones where your count of high tones was exactly right
- Lamps found: lamps pointing up that you tapped; wrong taps are shown separately and lower your finding accuracy
- Score: out of 100: the average of two percentages, your exact counts out of the runs counted, and the upright lamps you found out of all upright lamps plus your wrong taps
- Alone vs both: at levels 1 and 2, your counting and your finding alone against both at once; level 3 compares finding alone with finding while counting; level 4 is combined rounds only
- Cleared: our own target, not an official standard: an overall score of at least 80, and at least 75 on the rounds where you do both (at level 4 every round is both, so 80)
Independent practice
Independent practice by ProSyllabus, not produced or checked by Pearson TalentLens, RSSB, an assessment centre or a train company. These are original exercises, not official TEA-Occ items, pages or recordings, and trainer scores do not predict a TEA-Occ result. Train companies send the approved practice materials at least a week before the assessment; work through those too.
Read our guide to the TEA-Occ test. If you have ADHD, dyslexia or a hearing condition, read our guide to adjustments in train driver selection and ask the train company early.
Before you buy
Is this the real TEA-Occ?
No. It is our own set of original exercises: counting high tones, ignoring low tones and finding upright pointers, separately and together. They are not official TEA-Occ items, pages or recordings, and a trainer score does not predict a TEA-Occ result. Use the approved practice materials the train company sends you to see what to expect.
What do I get for the payment?
All 4 levels (level 1 stays free), with levels 2 to 4 opening on this device and any device you sign in on. Higher levels bring the high and low pitches closer together, play the tones faster, make the runs longer (up to 13 tones at level 4), add diagonal pointers to the panel from level 2 and near-upright ones at level 4, and give more rounds to both tasks at once (2 of 4 rounds at level 2, 2 of 3 at level 3, all 3 at level 4). Every result scores counting and finding separately, and shows correct counts, lamps found and wrong taps.
Will it tell me whether I would pass?
No. RSSB says RIS-3751-TOM issue four does not set pass marks: RSSB has recommended pass marks, but each train company decides which pass marks it uses. "Cleared" is our own target for moving up a level.
Does it work on a phone?
It is built for phones and computers, in Safari or Chrome, with the sound on. On an iPhone, turn the silent switch off and the volume up. Headphones help in a noisy room.
Do I need an account?
No. Level 1 is free with no sign-in. You can pay as a guest; signing in once afterwards keeps the trainer on your account.
