NHS GMTS 2027 · Stage 2 video interview · Virtual Assessment Centre

NHS GMTS video interview and assessment centre practice: answer video questions against the clock, work through 3 assessment-centre exercises, and see what your answers missed

For candidates preparing for Stage 2 and the Stage 3 Virtual Assessment Centre of the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme. 30 video-interview questions in 6 timed drills built on the six NHS values, your strengths and your motivation: time to prepare, then a timed answer you say aloud or type. Then three practice exercises we chose for the half-day Virtual Assessment Centre stage, all set in one invented NHS-style trust: a group exercise with role cards, a written task and a briefing. The NHS does not list its VAC exercises; these are our practice formats. You answer by speaking (your browser types it) or typing. ProSyllabus stores no audio or video, only your answer text; some browsers use their own online speech service for dictation.

VACs run from January to February 2027.

  • Drill 6: Leading change on placement5 questionsWhat would you do: resistance to change, a data problem, someone skipping a required step

The preparation-then-timed-answer structure mirrors the NHS description of Stage 2, which takes about 60 minutes overall, with only the video questions timed and time to prepare before you answer. Each question in a five-question drill gives you 60 seconds to prepare, then 2 minutes to answer. These exact times are our practice timings: follow the instructions the NHS gives you for your own assessment.

The NHS GMTS stages, 2027 entry

Stage 1: Future Potential Assessment
Online, about 45 minutes, not time-limited. You can practise each question type first. Everyone gets a feedback report.
Stage 2: NHS GMTS Alignment Assessment
About 60 minutes, including video responses. Only the video questions are timed, and the NHS says you will have plenty of time to prepare before recording. You can practise each question type first. Everyone gets a feedback report.
Who reviews your video
The NHS says its team manually reviews all video interview responses and does not use artificial intelligence for that review.
Stage 3: Virtual Assessment Centre (VAC)
Half a day of several exercises, online. You meet the NHS team and other candidates. VACs start in January 2027 and run through February. A feedback report follows, whatever the outcome.
After the VAC
One of three outcomes: an offer, a place on the reserve list, or unsuccessful. Successful candidates are then matched to placements using their assessment scores and preferences (allocation); trainees start on the first Monday of September 2027.
What the NHS looks for
The NHS says its process is designed to assess your strengths, not what or where you studied or your work experience: your potential to become a future NHS leader, with the right values and motivation to make positive change happen.
Pay
A minimum starting salary of £31,276 (plus High Cost Area Supplement where it applies), with the opportunity to increase to £33,681 after 12 months, subject to satisfactory probation.

The six NHS values the drills are built on

The NHS Constitution for England sets out six values, and the scheme points candidates to them: Working together for patients, Respect and dignity, Commitment to quality of care, Compassion, Improving lives, Everyone counts. Drills 2 to 4 take them two at a time.

Questions

Is this from the NHS?

No. ProSyllabus is independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by the NHS or the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme. The NHS recruitment pages do not list the Stage 2 questions, name the VAC exercises or describe how answers are scored. Every question, scenario and model answer here is our own, built on what the NHS does publish: the stages, its interest in strengths, values and motivation, and the six NHS values in the NHS Constitution. The NHS also provides preparation materials in your candidate account, including practice tests similar to the Stage 1 and Stage 2 assessments and familiarisation materials before the VAC: use them too.

Are the timings the same as Stage 2?

The shape follows the NHS description: Stage 2 takes about 60 minutes, only the video questions are timed, and you have time to prepare before you answer. The exact times are ours: 60 seconds to prepare and 2 minutes to answer, one response per question in each attempt, so you practise thinking on the clock. These are our practice timings: follow the instructions the NHS gives you for your own assessment.

Does the NHS VAC include a group exercise, a written task and a briefing?

The NHS says only that the half-day VAC has several exercises and that you meet the NHS team and other candidates. It does not list them. We chose these three formats for our independent practice exercises, set in one invented trust so they feel like one day.

How is my answer judged?

Each question has our own list of practice points: such as a concrete example showing your own role, the value demonstrated, the outcome and what you learned. An automated marker checks your answer against every point in about a minute, and any credit it gives quotes your own words. It can miss something or credit something it should not, so treat it as practice feedback and compare with the model answer or answer frame. The band (strong, solid, developing) is our guide, not an NHS score or a prediction. Your Stage 2 video itself is reviewed by people at the NHS.

Do I need NHS experience?

No. The NHS says its process is not about the work experience you have done. Examples from university, part-time jobs, volunteering, caring or sport count fully in our feedback.

Can I speak my answers?

Yes. Press "Speak my answer" and your browser turns what you say into text (Chrome, Edge and Safari; it asks to use the microphone, and some browsers use their own online speech service for this). ProSyllabus stores no audio or video: only the text of your answer is sent for feedback. You can type or correct the text during the answer window. This pack does not record video.

Can I try it first?

Yes. One video question is free, on the same clock, with full feedback and a model answer, and no sign-up.
