Clerical Officer practice test: rate the actions in 12 work scenarios

In recent publicjobs Clerical Officer and Temporary Clerical Officer competitions, including Clerical Officer in the Civil Service Nationwide 2026, Stage 1 was an online Assessment Questionnaire. In Part B you read a work scenario and rate each possible action on its own as a Good, Adequate, Weak or Bad response, and your score sets your place in the order of merit for interview. This practice test gives you 12 original scenarios and 39 actions to rate in the full test player, with the reason behind every rating. Start with the 4 free ratings.

The publicjobs documents give no time limit for the Assessment Questionnaire, so the 20-minute clock is ours: a pace, not a rule.

How the ratings work

Each action is rated on its own, as if it were the only one taken: Good (meets the needs of the situation well), Adequate (acceptable, with some shortcomings or omissions), Weak (falls below the acceptable level) or Bad (falls far below the acceptable level). publicjobs says not every scenario has every rating. Our ratings are judged against the scale and the Clerical Officer capability framework, and each explanation says why.

Part A of the questionnaire asks about your own skills and experience; in Clerical Officer Nationwide 2026 it included four written answers of 100 to 200 words. Your answers there should reflect your own skills and experience accurately, as publicjobs says responses may be verified at interview, so it is not in this test, which practises Part B.

Before you buy

What do I get?

Two practice tests of 6 scenarios each, 39 actions to rate, run in the full test player with a 20-minute clock. When you submit, you see your score by scenario theme and the reason behind every rating. Retake them as often as you like.

Are these real publicjobs test questions?

No. Every scenario, passage, table and question here is original, written by us to the format publicjobs describes. We do not reproduce publicjobs test items.

How were the answers checked?

Every item was answered again independently, without our answer key, against the official scale and the published capability framework. An item went in only when those answers matched ours. Every explanation says why the answer is right.

Is this the current format?

It follows the Part B format in the Stage 1 documents for Clerical Officer 2023 Dublin, Temporary Clerical Officer 2024B, Temporary Clerical Officer Nationwide 2026 and Clerical Officer in the Civil Service Nationwide 2026. Last checked 25 October 2026. Each competition sets out its own stages in its candidate information booklet on publicjobs.ie, and familiarisation material goes to invited candidates, so read those before your test.

Is it official?

No. This is independent practice by ProSyllabus. Not affiliated with publicjobs or the Public Appointments Service; not the official test. publicjobs offers its own free self-assessment tests on its test advice page.
