The four areas are four of the five core knowledge areas CITB names for the Operatives test. Each question has one correct answer, and each explanation names the law or the HSE guidance it comes from.

Not practised here

  • the fifth core knowledge area, Specialist
  • other question styles: only single-answer questions are included here, while CITB's demo test shows a sample of different question styles
  • the Specialist tests and the Managers and Professionals test

What you see after every mock

  • Your score out of 50 and your score in each area, so you can see which area costs you the most marks.
  • Your time per question, against a clock of 45 minutes for 50 questions.
  • The reason behind every answer, with the regulation or the HSE guidance it is based on.

A score here is your score on our questions. It is not an HS&E test result and does not predict one.

The HS&E test, as CITB describes it

  • There are three types of HS&E test: Operatives, Specialists, and Managers and Professionals. CSCS's card finder tells you which one your card needs; the Operatives test is the one for the Labourer card and most Blue Skilled Worker cards.
  • Each HS&E test lasts 45 minutes and contains 50 questions. The Operatives test covers five core knowledge areas: working environment, occupational health, safety, high risk activities and specialist.
  • The pass mark for the Operatives test is 90%: at least 45 out of 50 questions correct.
  • The test costs £23.50 and is booked through CITB, not through CSCS.

Before you buy

Are these the real CITB questions?

No. Every question is our own, written from UK health and safety law and HSE guidance. None comes from CITB's GT100 book, its app or the real test.

Is this made or recommended by CITB?

No. It is independent practice by ProSyllabus. CITB sells its own revision materials, including GT100 and an app; this does not replace them.

Will this make me pass?

We do not claim that it will. It gives you timed practice with CITB's published question count and time limit, your score by area on our questions and the reason behind every answer, so you can see where to revise.

Which test is this for?

The Operatives test. CSCS says it is required for the Labourer, Trainee and Apprentice cards and most Blue Skilled Worker and Gold Advanced Craft cards; use the CSCS card finder to check the test for your occupation. It is not built for the Specialist tests or the Managers and Professionals test.

What do I get?

3 mocks of 50 questions with a 45-minute clock, in the full test player with a question palette and mark for review. After each mock: your score by area, your time per question and the explanation of every answer. Retake any mock as often as you like.

How do I pay and get access?

One payment by card (or PayPal where offered), handled by our payment provider. In the United Kingdom the price is charged in pounds; in the euro area and the United States in your own currency; elsewhere in your own currency where we support it, otherwise in Indian rupees with the local figure shown as an estimate. Access opens on this device straight after payment. Sign in afterwards to keep it on your account. Purchase policy.
