The real exam, from the CII’s own pages

  • Format: 50 multiple-choice questions, 39 standard format and 11 multiple response, in one hour.
  • Standard format: four options, one correct or best answer, one mark; no marks are deducted for an incorrect response.
  • Multiple response: four to six options, more than one correct; you must select all the correct options to gain the mark.
  • Questions per learning outcome: LO1 15 standard; LO2 8 standard + 7 multiple response; LO3 6 standard + 4 multiple response; LO4 10 standard. The syllabus calls these a guide, not the actual number in every exam: each will generally be within plus or minus 2.
  • Tax year: this syllabus is examined from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027, on English law and practice in the tax year 2026/2027 unless otherwise stated.
  • Tax tables: extracts from tax tables are provided in the exam, and you may not take your own in. The CII publishes the tables for exams from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027.
  • Pass mark: the unit page states a standard pass mark of 65%; marks are adjusted where necessary for the difficulty of each exam version. The unit page gives the 2025 pass rate as 59.61%.

Before you buy

What do I get?

Two full R03 practice exams of 50 questions each, one hour each: 39 standard questions with four options and 11 multiple response questions, spread across the four learning outcomes following the numbers the CII’s 2026/27 syllabus gives as its guide. Every answer comes with an explanation, and every calculation is worked step by step. Each exam runs in our exam player (timer, question palette, mark for review) and ends with your score by learning outcome. Retake either exam as often as you like; access does not expire.

Which tax year do the questions use?

The 2026/27 tax year, the one examined from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027. Every rate, band, allowance and threshold in a question is taken from the CII’s tax tables for exams in that period, read on 25 October 2026.

Is this the current R03 format?

It follows the format the CII describes in its R03 syllabus and its R03 examination guide for exams from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027 (both published June 2026), read on 25 October 2026: 50 multiple-choice questions, 39 standard format and 11 multiple response, in one hour. The one difference is how our multiple response questions are shown, below.

How are the multiple response questions shown?

The CII’s examination guide says that in a multiple response question more than one option is correct and you must select all the correct options to gain the mark. Our player takes one answer per question, so each of our multiple response questions lists numbered statements and you choose the one option that names every correct statement and no other: you score only if you pick that option.

What is the R03 pass mark?

The CII’s R03 unit page states that the standard pass mark is 65%. The CII explains that, where necessary, it adjusts marks for the difficulty of each exam version so that the same standard applies. Compare your practice score with 65%, remembering that a practice score is not a prediction.

Are these real exam questions?

No. They are original questions written to the learning outcomes in the CII’s R03 syllabus. They are not CII specimen or exam questions, and the CII has not written or endorsed them. The CII’s own examination guide, on its R03 unit page, contains a specimen exam; use it too.

Will my score here predict my R03 result?

No. A practice score shows where you are strong and weak on our questions; it is not a forecast of your exam result.

How do I pay and get access?

One payment by card, handled by our payment provider. The price is shown and charged in pounds in the UK, in your own currency elsewhere where we support it, and otherwise in Indian rupees. Access opens on this device straight after payment. Sign in afterwards to keep it on your account.

Independent practice, not written or endorsed by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII). These are original questions, not CII specimen or exam questions. They follow English law and practice for the 2026/27 tax year, with every rate and allowance taken from the CII’s exam tax tables for 2026/2027; the CII’s syllabus decides what is examined.
