Navigating the Biotechnology Eligibility Test for Category I & II Fellowships
1. The Two-Part Exam Architecture

The Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) is a 180-minute Computer Based Test (CBT). For every correct answer, you receive +3 marks, but the negative marking is steep at -1 mark for every incorrect guess.

Part A50 Compulsory Qs (General Science/Aptitude)
Part BAttempt 50/150 Qs (Core Biotech)
300 MarksTotal Weightage
1/3rd PenaltyNegative Marking
2. Subject Mastery & High-Yield Units
The "Smart Selection" Rule (Part B):

Since you only need to answer 50 out of 150 questions in Part B, your ability to skip irrelevant specialized areas is your greatest strength. Focus on your core units:

  • Molecular Biology: DNA replication, repair, and operon models.
  • Biotechniques: PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, and Spectroscopy.
  • Bioinformatics: Sequence alignment, BLAST, and database tools.
  • RDT: Vectors, restriction enzymes, and cloning strategies.
3. Mandatory Exam Day Checklist
Pro Tip: NTA registration and frisking can take time. Reach your center at least 2 hours before the gate closing time mentioned on your admit card.
  • Admit Card:
Printed copy with the "Self-Declaration" pre-filled.
  • Photo ID:
Original Aadhaar, PAN, or Passport (Originals only).
  • Additional Photo:
One passport-size photo to be pasted on the attendance sheet.
  • Personal Items:
Transparent ballpoint pen and a transparent water bottle only.
4. NTA Dress Code for BET 2026

To ensure a smooth entry, follow the "Minimalist" dress code used for major NTA science exams:

  • Apparel: Wear light-colored, half-sleeve clothing. Avoid large buttons or multi-pockets (Cargo pants).
  • Footwear: Slippers or thin-soled sandals. Shoes are strictly not allowed inside the CBT halls.
  • Accessories: No watches (digital or analog), jewelry, belts, or wallets are permitted.
  • Biometrics: Avoid applying Mehndi or temporary tattoos as they interfere with fingerprint scanning.
5. Strategic Time Management

With a total of 100 questions to attempt in 180 minutes, you have plenty of time. Use it to avoid negative marks:

  1. Aptitude (40 Mins): Finish Part A first. These are often easier math/general science questions.
  2. The Selection Sweep (20 Mins): Spend time reading Part B questions. Mark the 50 you are most confident in.
  3. Accuracy Round (100 Mins): Solve your chosen Part B questions carefully. Double-check your numerical answers.
  4. Final Buffer (20 Mins): Verify that you haven't exceeded the 50-question limit in Part B (the system usually prevents this, but check your marked responses).
