Checked 1 October 2026. The 2027 CSE notice is not yet published. Birth dates, cut-off date, age relaxations and service-holder provisions below come from the 2026 notice; any 2027 projection is conditional.

The CSE 2027 annual calendar gives a notification date, but it does not give the 2027 eligibility rules. The latest official Civil Services notice we checked is for CSE 2026. It requires most candidates to be at least 21 and below 32 on 1 August 2026, with category-based age relaxations. General and EWS candidates have six attempts, OBC candidates nine, and SC/ST candidates no numeric attempt cap within the age limit. The 2026 notice also changes what some already-allotted officers can do in a later cycle. Read those rules before using a simple age calculator.

Age and date of birth: the published 2026 rule

QuestionAnswer
Age date in the official 2026 notice1 August 2026
Base minimum and maximumAt least 21 and below 32 on that date
Printed base birth windowBorn no earlier than 2 August 1994 and no later than 1 August 2005
2027 birth windowNot official until the CSE 2027 notice is issued

The 2026 notice prints the birth-date window because a statement such as “21 to 32” can hide an off-by-one error at midnight. A person born on 1 August 2005 reaches 21 on the qualifying date and meets the minimum age; a person born on 2 August 2005 does not. At the older edge, the notice prints 2 August 1994 as the earliest date for the unrelaxed window. Use the exact words in the 2027 notice when it arrives, particularly if your birthday falls near a boundary. A newspaper’s shorthand of “up to 32 years” is not a substitute for the printed dates.

If the 2027 notice repeats the same 1 August reference date and otherwise keeps the age wording, a one-year-shifted birth window would be 2 August 1995 through 1 August 2006. That is our conditional arithmetic, not a 2027 UPSC announcement. An application portal may accept data provisionally; acceptance by a form does not decide final eligibility. Match the date of birth on your matriculation or equivalent certificate to the notice and ensure the document you will later produce is consistent.

UPSC CSE 2026 notice. This chart shows additional years, not a universal age ceiling; combinations have conditions.

The table is a summary, not a certificate decision. For PwBD, the 2026 notice allows the disability relaxation to be added to applicable SC/ST or OBC relaxation. Similar cumulative provisions exist for eligible ex-servicemen and other specified classes. Yet the arithmetic only helps after you establish that you belong to the exact qualifying class in the notice and hold the required proof. Do not stack every row because several have special service definitions or documentary conditions. An EWS certificate does not itself grant the OBC age relaxation; EWS follows the unrelaxed base age and six-attempt rule.

A useful way to avoid a false eligibility conclusion is to write your category, the provision you rely on, the document proving it and the qualifying date on one page. Then check each against the PDF rather than a third-party chart. If your claim involves both a reservation class and a service or disability relaxation, check the notice’s combination language directly. A candidate at the edge should keep a copy of the relevant clause and consider seeking written clarification from UPSC through its official help route rather than spending an attempt based on an internet calculator.

Attempt limits are separate from age limits

Candidate classCSE 2026 numeric attempt capAge cap still applies?
General and EWS6Yes
OBC9Yes
SC and STNo numeric capYes
PwBD, General/EWS/OBC9Yes
PwBD, SC/STNo numeric capYes

“Unlimited attempts” for SC/ST and some PwBD candidates does not mean unlimited years. It means there is no separate attempt counter before the applicable age ceiling. A candidate can run out of age eligibility with fewer appearances than another candidate. Conversely, a General-category candidate may still be young enough but already have used all six permitted appearances. Both checks must pass. Your count should include actual Preliminary appearances in earlier Civil Services examinations under the relevant rule, not merely years in which you downloaded an admit card.

UPSC’s 2026 notice defines an attempt by actual appearance in at least one Preliminary paper. Submitting an application and staying home does not consume an attempt. Appearing in only GS Paper-I and leaving before CSAT does consume one, while failing the requirement to appear in both papers for Main consideration. The rule does not refund the attempt if you are later disqualified. This is why the decision to sit an attempt with almost no preparation is personal: an aspirant near the cap should weigh the experience gained against the irreversible use of one opportunity. The official rule tells you what counts; only you can decide whether the experience is worth it.

Keep an attempt ledger with year, roll number and whether you physically sat at least one Preliminary paper. This is more reliable than trying to reconstruct your history during the next application window. If your category changed or a certificate was issued later, do not assume that an old attempt disappears. Read the current notice’s treatment of category and relaxations and supply truthful history. An incorrect self-declaration may surface during later verification, long after the preliminary stage.

The serving-officer rules that many age pages omit

Situation2026 notice treatment
Already a member of IAS or IFS from an earlier CSECannot compete in CSE 2026
Previously selected for IPSCannot opt for IPS again
Allocated IPS or Central Group A through CSE 2026One CSE 2027 chance under the stated training-exemption conditions; later attempts require resignation
Allocated a service through CSE 2025 or earlierOne chance in CSE 2026 or CSE 2027 under the transition provision

An employed candidate can be within age and attempts yet fail a service-specific restriction. UPSC’s CSE 2026 notice distinguishes existing IAS/IFS members, persons already selected for IPS, candidates newly allocated IPS or a Central Group A service through CSE 2026, and candidates allocated from CSE 2025 or earlier. A single “government employees can reattempt” line loses those distinctions. The table condenses the current notice to show where to look; the exact service, selection year and training status matter.

The new CSE 2026 allottee provision allows a one-time further attempt at CSE 2027 under a training exemption process, with a choice between the allocations. It bars a CSE 2028 or later attempt unless the officer resigns, according to the notice. There is also a transition chance for someone allotted through CSE 2025 or earlier: one of CSE 2026 or CSE 2027 without resigning. These rules can affect real career decisions. Do not infer that a temporary exemption is a permanent right to keep sitting. Read the official paragraph with your allotment year and service in mind, then use the 2027 notice to check whether the provision remains in force.

The rule about an existing IAS or Indian Foreign Service member is different again: the 2026 notice prevents a member from competing in CSE 2026. It also prevents a person already selected for the Indian Police Service from opting for IPS again. Those are service eligibility constraints, not a lower number of attempts. A generic online attempt counter cannot assess them. If you are already in service, read the service-holder paragraph before you pay fees, request leave or consider resignation. Where an employer’s service conditions also apply, obtain the applicable official advice rather than relying on a blog comment.

Degree, nationality and application proof

The CSE 2026 basic education rule is a graduate degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification. A final-year student may apply provisionally, but must produce proof of passing at the stage and by the date specified for the Main/Interview process in the notice. That is not permission to invent a completion date in the form. Read the documentary deadlines and arrange transcripts or provisional certificates early. Candidates with an equivalent qualification should check the actual equivalence rule, not only whether a coaching page lists their course name.

Nationality is also service-dependent. For IAS, IFS and IPS, the notice requires Indian citizenship. For certain other services, it provides additional eligibility categories such as subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, specified Tibetan refugees and persons of Indian origin from named countries, subject to certificates where required. If you are in one of those groups, read the full nationality clause because the short label “Indian or Nepalese” omits both service distinctions and certificate requirements. The guide is a roadmap to the provision, not a nationality determination.

The 2026 Preliminary fee is Rs 100, with an additional Rs 200 for the Main stage. Women and SC, ST and PwBD candidates are exempt under the stated rules. Do not use those 2026 amounts as an assurance about the unpublished 2027 notice. Whether or not a fee applies, a candidate should save the final submitted application and confirmation details. The safe order is: verify age, category, attempts, service status and education against the notice; gather proof; then submit early enough to correct errors before the closing time.

A decision sequence for a 2027 candidate

Start with the annual calendar only for the date horizon: it schedules the CSE 2027 notification for 13 January and Prelims for 23 May. The calendar contains no 2027 birth window. Use this article to understand what changed in the latest notice, and set a reminder to re-run every eligibility check when the 2027 notification is posted. If you are near an age boundary or already have several attempts, keep a separate document for each rule rather than one optimistic “eligible” badge from an unofficial calculator.

Next, make the facts auditable. Put the exact date of birth shown on your certificate beside the notice window. Count actual Preliminary appearances, including a year in which you sat only one paper. Identify the category and relaxation proof you will submit. If you have been allocated a service, note the CSE year, service and training status. Finally confirm degree completion and nationality rules. None of these checks requires a predicted cut-off or a coaching institute’s claim about how many vacancies may arise.

The payoff of this process is not just avoiding rejection. It lets you choose preparation and resource spending rationally. A candidate with one available attempt may decide to spend more months building GS-I, CSAT and an optional before sitting, while another may value the experience of a live paper. Both choices can be sensible; the official rules define the opportunity cost. Use the ProSyllabus CSE practice quizzes to identify a subject weakness, but remember that the current quiz library is not a full Prelims simulation. If you need a complete timed assessment, use an actual previous UPSC paper under exam conditions and score GS-I and CSAT separately.

Check your preparation after the rules

After confirming eligibility in the official notice, try the available UPSC subject quizzes and record which topics need more work. These are practice drills, not an eligibility decision or a full Prelims mock.
