GATE DA Without a CS Degree: Maths, Stats, ECE, EE and B.Sc. Students

Checked 25 September 2026. GATE 2027 eligibility is official and fixed. Programme admission rules are from the 2026–27 pages and are revised every year.

GATE 2027 eligibility (official)

• Anyone in the third or higher year of any undergraduate degree, or who has completed a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities.
• A 3-year B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. or BCA student is eligible in the third year or after completing it; an M.Sc., M.A. or MCA student from the first year; MBBS/BDS and some other degrees only from specified semesters (see the official table).
• There is no age limit, and no single GATE paper is restricted by degree discipline. A second paper, if you want one, must be an allowed combination (with DA: CS, EC, EE, MA, ME, PH, RA, ST or XE).

Eligibility to sit the exam is not the same as eligibility for a programme — see the next section.

Where other pages get this wrong

Writing GATE DA does not make you eligible for every AI M.Tech.

Commonly published instead: "Any graduate can write DA and get into an IIT AI programme."

Sitting GATE DA is open to any third-year undergraduate. Admission is not: IIT Hyderabad's M.Tech AI, for example, takes a B.Tech in any discipline or an M.Sc. only in mathematics, statistics or applied mathematics. A B.Sc. graduate should shortlist programmes by their degree rule first, and prepare for DA second.

Mathematics and statistics graduates

• Python: start in week one and practise daily. GATE tests it by output tracing — lists, slicing, loops, functions, recursion, simple classes.
• Data structures and algorithms: stacks, queues, linked lists, trees, hash tables; searching and the five sorts named in the syllabus; graph traversals and shortest paths. This is the biggest new block for you — 14 to 20 marks.
• DBMS & warehousing: ER and relational models, relational algebra, SQL, normal forms, indexing, OLAP. Entirely new, and 18 of 85 subject marks in 2026 by our count of the official paper.
• ML and AI: your statistics helps enormously (regression, naive Bayes, LDA, PCA are statistics), but search algorithms and logic will be new.

Electronics and electrical engineers

• Your calculus and linear algebra are usually enough; probability needs extending to statistics (confidence intervals, z/t/χ² tests, CLT).
• Python and data structures: you probably know some C — switch to Python early, because DA questions are written in it.
• DBMS and AI are entirely new; ML may be partly familiar from signal-processing electives.

Mechanical, civil and chemical engineers

• Calculus is your strength; linear algebra usually needs SVD, projections and quadratic forms added.
• Probability and statistics, programming, DBMS, ML and AI are all substantial new learning — budget the full nineteen weeks.

BCA and B.Sc. Computer Science

• Programming and DBMS are your strengths; probability, statistics and linear algebra at GATE level are the gap, followed by ML and AI.

A month to stop Python and data structures being the obstacle

• Week 1: Python types, lists, tuples, dictionaries, strings and slicing. Every day, trace ten short snippets on paper and check them by running them.
• Week 2: loops, functions, default arguments, recursion. Trace recursive functions by drawing the call stack.
• Week 3: stacks, queues and linked lists implemented in Python; linear and binary search, including the off-by-one cases GATE likes.
• Week 4: the five sorting algorithms in the syllabus, tracing each pass by hand; then trees and a first look at BFS and DFS.

Run this alongside the mathematics you already know, not instead of it. A measurable target for the end of October: at least 20 of the 31 programming questions in the three past papers (listed in our previous-papers guide) solved correctly without the key.

Practise it, don't just read it

Start with the section that is newest to you — a ten-question quiz shows within minutes whether it really is new.

The ProSyllabus GATE DA library currently has three topic quizzes: Matrix Rank and Inverse (Section 2, Linear Algebra), Backpropagation in Neural Networks (Section 6, multi-layer perceptrons) and Gradient Descent Variants (optimisation practice for Machine Learning — the syllabus names no gradient methods, though a 2026 question applied an SGD update). Each has ten questions and a worked explanation for every option. Probability, programming and DBMS have no quizzes yet — drill those from the section index of the official papers.
