CMS is a two-stage recruitment with no descriptive paper anywhere in it: the whole written component is 500 marks of multiple choice across two two-hour sittings on a single day, and the only human judgement in the process is the 100-mark personality test. That makes the interview worth a sixth of the total, a much heavier share than in the Civil Services Examination, where the interview is 275 of 2,025. The 2027 rows come from the UPSC annual examination calendar published on 20 May 2026 and reported by Testbook and PhysicsWallah. UPSC states in that calendar that dates of notification, commencement and duration are subject to alteration, so they are shown here as tentative until the notification itself is issued.

The commonest misreading of CMS is that it is a lighter version of NEET PG with a viva attached. It is not. It is a recruitment examination with a fixed vacancy count, which means the cut-off floats on how many posts were requisitioned that year rather than on any fixed standard, and the 100-mark personality test sits on a written base of only 500 marks. A candidate who treats the interview as a formality after a strong written score is doing the arithmetic wrong.

CMS 2026 carried 1,358 vacancies, reported consistently by Careers360 and Prepp. Because the written stage exists only to fill an interview list against those posts, the qualifying mark moves with the requisition rather than with the difficulty of the paper. A year with a large requisition produces a noticeably softer written cut-off than a year with a small one, and the same raw score can be comfortable in one cycle and short in the next. That is the reason comparing your mock score against a published cut-off from an earlier year is close to meaningless unless you also know that year's vacancy figure. Read the 2027 notification's vacancy table before you calibrate any target score, and treat the number as tentative until UPSC revises it, which it routinely does after the examination.

Paper I covers General Medicine and Paediatrics for 250 marks. Paper II covers Surgery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Preventive and Social Medicine, also for 250 marks. Candidates coming from a postgraduate-entrance preparation pattern habitually over-invest in medicine and surgery and under-invest in Preventive and Social Medicine, which in CMS is not a minor subject but a full share of a 250-mark paper and is the part of the syllabus most directly relevant to the jobs on offer. National health programmes, epidemiology, biostatistics, health administration and the Indian public health delivery structure are high-yield and comparatively stable year to year. The one-third negative marking applies across both papers, so the marginal value of an uninformed guess in a weak area is negative, and PSM is the cheapest area in which to convert guesses into certainties.

The personality test is 100 marks against a written total of 500, so it is a sixth of the 600-mark final aggregate. In a recruitment where several hundred candidates reach the interview for a comparable number of posts, a spread of thirty marks in the interview outweighs a spread of thirty marks in the written papers entirely, because interview scores are more dispersed than written scores at the top of the list. The 2026 result notice, as reported by Testbook, requires qualified candidates to log in to the UPSC portal within fifteen days to update educational qualifications and upload documents. Missing that window is an administrative way to lose a place that a written score cannot recover, and it is the single most avoidable failure in this cycle.

Careers360 reports that applicants must have passed the written and practical parts of the final MBBS examination, and Prepp adds that final-year candidates may apply subject to submitting proof of completion within the stated timeframe. The upper age limit is reported as 32 years, with 35 quoted for the Central Health Service stream and the usual relaxations for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates. No source reachable here set out the compulsory rotating internship condition in the Commission's own words, and that condition materially affects final-year applicants, so read the eligibility clause in the 2027 notification rather than relying on any summary, including this one. There is no separate cap on attempts reported for CMS; the age limit does that work.

The UPSC calendar released on 20 May 2026 puts CMS 2027 notification on 3 March 2027, the application deadline on 23 March 2027, and the examination on 18 July 2027 as a single-day sitting. That is a fortnight earlier in the year than the 2 August 2026 date, and the roughly four-month gap between closing the form and sitting the paper is the whole preparation runway for anyone starting from a standing start. Candidates who are also sitting a postgraduate entrance in the same season should note that the CMS window falls in the middle of it, and that CMS rewards breadth across five clinical and community subjects rather than the depth a PG entrance rewards. Treat all three 2027 dates as tentative until the notification confirms them.
