One published account of the paper states that candidates may attempt questions from any two of the four disciplines rather than all four. That claim appears in a single coaching source and conflicts with the syllabus as otherwise published, which sets out all four disciplines without indicating an option. Until the scheme of examination in the next UPESSC advertisement settles it, the safe assumption is that all four are examinable.

This calendar is common to the whole UP TGT recruitment rather than specific to Social Science: every subject was examined in the same two-day sitting and processed through the same verification, result and allotment dates. Only the vacancy count, the closing marks and the paper itself vary by subject.

The defining problem of UP TGT Social Science is the mismatch between the eligibility rule and the paper. A candidate qualifies by having studied any two of history, political science, geography and economics at graduation, but the syllabus for subject code 09 sets out all four. Most candidates therefore sit the paper having formally studied only half of it, and the two unstudied disciplines are where the marks are lost.

The reported eligibility is a B.A. in which any two of history, political science, geography and economics were taken, plus B.Ed. The published syllabus, by contrast, runs across all four: history from prehistoric cultures, the Indus Valley and Vedic civilisation through Jainism and Buddhism, the Mughal empire and the independence movement to the French and Russian revolutions; geography from the origin of the solar system, the earth's motions, latitude and longitude through the atmosphere, oceans, biosphere, Indian relief, climate, agriculture, minerals, industry, population, disaster management and map reading; economics from micro and macro distinctions, demand, supply, elasticity and utility through national income, banking, inflation, international trade and Indian planning; and civics from state, sovereignty, rights, liberty and equality through the Constitution, the organs of government, elections and administration. Budget study time by what you have not studied, not by what you enjoy.

In practice the commonest pairing at graduation in Uttar Pradesh is history with political science, and the discipline most often left untouched is economics, followed by physical geography. Both are technical rather than narrative. Consumer equilibrium, elasticity of demand, national income accounting, the banking system and inflation cannot be absorbed by reading; they need worked definitions and numerical familiarity. The same is true of the earth-science end of geography, where latitude and longitude, insolation, pressure belts and ocean currents are diagram-based. If you studied history and civics, treat economics and physical geography as the syllabus and the two familiar disciplines as revision, because the 404-mark unreserved cut-off leaves no room to concede a quarter of the paper.

In the 01/2022 cycle the unreserved male cut-off was 404.000 of 500, roughly 81 per cent. That is well above Science at 362.880, which shares the same multi-discipline problem, and well below Urdu at 460.000, Mathematics at 452.000 and Sanskrit at 491.904. The Social Science table is also the one that carried a published ST figure, 296.000 for men, which is far below the general line and reflects a thin ST applicant pool in this subject. The practical reading is that a candidate needs about a hundred of 125 questions right, which is attainable across four disciplines only with systematic coverage rather than selective depth.

Social Science was advertised at 383 posts, 337 for men and 46 for women, making it the third largest subject block after Science and Sanskrit in a total of 3,539. That reflects the standard staffing of Uttar Pradesh's non-government aided secondary schools, where classes nine and ten carry a dedicated social science teacher. Because posts are advertised separately for men's and women's institutions, and the two lists close at different marks, women's cut-offs are not uniformly lower: in this subject the SC women's mark, 388.000, closed above the SC men's mark of 372.000. Check the list that applies to you rather than the headline figure.

If the reported 90-plus-30 pattern is adopted, Social Science candidates are better placed than most: the reported general studies section covers Indian history, geography, polity, economy, Uttar Pradesh knowledge and current affairs, which overlaps heavily with four disciplines they are already preparing. The genuine new work is Uttar Pradesh-specific general knowledge and current affairs, plus the elementary science that a social science graduate will not have touched. Against that, one-third negative marking removes the value of guessing on the two disciplines you did not study, which pushes the case for covering all four properly rather than relying on elimination.
