The Mathematics paper is set at graduate standard and has no pedagogy section of its own; what used to be an all-subject paper now shares a fifth of its questions with General Studies. Sources disagree on whether the penalty for a wrong answer applies to TGT as well as PGT, so treat the marking rule as unsettled until the advertisement appears.

This calendar is common to every subject in the Trained Graduate Teacher recruitment: Mathematics, Home Science, Music, Physical Education and the rest share one advertisement, one application window and one examination date, and differ only in the paper's subject half. The PGT rows are included because they show the order in which UPESSC is clearing its queue.

Mathematics candidates routinely prepare as though the paper were school mathematics for classes 9 and 10, because that is what the post teaches. It is not. The published UPESSC syllabus runs to group theory and Lagrange's theorem, metric spaces and convergence, De Moivre's theorem, conics and three-dimensional geometry, differential equations, and statics and dynamics. That is a full graduate B.Sc. or B.A. Mathematics spread, and it is why this subject's cut-off sits near the top of the recruitment.

The twelve clusters in the Mathematics syllabus are commercial mathematics, statistics, algebra, probability, set theory, real analysis, trigonometry, complex numbers, geometry, coordinate geometry, calculus, and vectors with statics and dynamics. Only the first three and geometry overlap meaningfully with the school syllabus a TGT will actually teach. Real analysis, group theory up to Lagrange's theorem, De Moivre's theorem and hyperbolic functions, conics and three-dimensional geometry, and projectile motion are degree material. Candidates who revise from NCERT classes 9 to 12 alone leave a third of the paper unaddressed, then find that the abstract algebra and analysis questions are the ones separating a 440 from a 460.

The unreserved Mathematics cut-off for boys' posts in Advertisement 01/2022 was 456 of 500, girls' posts 452. On a 125-question paper at four marks each with no negative marking, 456 means 114 correct out of 125 — roughly eleven mistakes permitted across the whole paper. OBC stood at 448 on both rosters, SC at 428 for boys and 424 for girls. Compare Physical Education at 392 and 396 unreserved. Mathematics is therefore an accuracy contest rather than a coverage contest: the marginal mark comes from eliminating careless slips in commercial mathematics and trigonometry, not from a further pass over topology.

Under the revised scheme reported for the coming cycle, Mathematics questions fall from 125 to 90 and General Studies takes 30. For a strong mathematician that is a loss: the subject was the whole paper and now supplies three-quarters of it, so thirty questions of current affairs, teaching and research aptitude, ICT, environment, Indian history and geography, the Constitution and the economy are pure downside risk. The sensible allocation is not proportional. General Studies is thirty marks a candidate with no background will simply drop, and at a cut-off near ninety per cent those thirty marks decide selection. Budget genuine weekly time for it from the start.

Mathematics carried 533 of the posts in the last cycle, second only to English and Hindi at 557 each and more than triple Home Science or Physical Education. The 508 to 25 split between boys' and girls' schools is the most lopsided of any large subject, which means women applying in Mathematics compete for a very small roster at a cut-off barely lower than the men's. Male candidates get the opposite: a wide roster where the difference between selection and waiting for the next cycle is a handful of marks. With 17,740 TGT posts reported in the pipeline, Mathematics can be expected to remain one of the largest subject blocks.

Past papers in this subject weight the computational clusters heavily: commercial mathematics with interest, banking and taxation, statistics and measures of central tendency, algebra including surds, logarithms, matrices, progressions and the binomial theorem, and trigonometry. These are fast, certain marks and should be secured first and then kept warm with timed drills. Real analysis, set theory and group theory, and the vector and dynamics cluster yield fewer questions per hour invested but are exactly where the top scorers pull away. Leave them second, not last, and do not defer them into the final month, when the General Studies section will need the room.
