Biology and Science are separate TGT subjects in Uttar Pradesh. Science is the larger post, covering physics and chemistry at graduate level, and it carried 540 posts; Biology is the botany and zoology paper and carried 50. Selection for TGT is on written marks alone, with no interview component, unlike PGT where a 40-mark interview is added.

This calendar is common to every subject in the TGT recruitment: Biology candidates sat the same two-day sitting as Hindi, Commerce and the rest, and the result and allotment dates above are shared. Only the cut-off, the merit list and the vacancy count are subject-specific.

The most common mistake in TGT Biology is preparing from the Science syllabus. In Uttar Pradesh these are two different papers with two different post counts, and a candidate who has revised physics and chemistry has revised the wrong subject. The second mistake is treating a 50-post subject as an easy target because the number is small; a small post count compresses the merit list rather than widening it, and the reported unreserved cut-off of 440 out of 500 reflects that.

The reported TGT Biology syllabus splits cleanly into zoology and botany. Zoology covers animal taxonomy from Protozoa to Chordata, cell biology and inheritance including Mendel's laws, linkage and crossing over, human physiology, biomolecules, embryology, ecology, and the evolution theories of Lamarck, Darwin and the neo-Darwinian synthesis. Botany covers viruses, fungi, algae and lichens, bryophytes and pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms, plant taxonomy and nomenclature, plant physiology, plant genetics and biochemistry, plant pathology, environmental botany and molecular biology. The level is the B.Sc. degree paper, not the school textbook, which is why classification and nomenclature questions in particular reward candidates who have kept their graduation notes.

Fifty posts, 49 of them in boys' institutions, means the Biology merit list is one of the shortest in the recruitment. Reported cut-offs place unreserved male candidates at 440 of 500, EWS at 436, OBC at 432 and SC at 416, a spread of only 24 marks across four categories. In a paper with no negative marking under the old scheme, that narrow band means six questions separate the top category from the bottom one. Candidates should plan to attempt everything rather than leave blanks, and should treat the difference between a confident answer and an educated guess as worth the same four marks it was always worth.

Under the revised UPESSC scheme, 30 of the 120 questions, worth 90 of 360 marks, come from General Studies: Indian history and culture, geography of India and Uttar Pradesh, polity and the Constitution, economy, science and technology, Uttar Pradesh specific material and current affairs. A quarter of the paper now sits outside biology entirely. Science graduates who prepared only their discipline for the 2022 cycle are the group most exposed by this change, because a strong botany and zoology score can no longer compensate for a blank general section when every subject in the recruitment faces the same 90 marks.

The 2022 cycle paper carried 125 questions at four marks each with no penalty for a wrong answer, so the rational strategy was to mark every question. The revised scheme introduces a penalty; reported descriptions differ, one saying one mark is deducted for a wrong answer against three for a correct one and another describing a one-third deduction. Until UPESSC's own notification text is available, prepare for the harsher reading. In practice that means abandoning blind guessing on taxonomy and nomenclature questions, where distractors are close, and reserving guesses for items where two options can be eliminated on first principles.

TGT Biology requires a bachelor's degree with zoology and botany together, plus a B.Ed. from an institution recognised in India, as reported for the subject-wise qualification table. This is narrower than TGT Science, which is taken by B.Sc. candidates with physics and chemistry. The minimum age is 21, reckoned as on 1 July of the recruitment year, and TET or CTET is not a requirement for the TGT posts in aided secondary schools. Candidates holding a B.Sc. in a single life-science discipline should confirm their combination against the notification text before paying the fee, which ran from 250 to 750 rupees by category in the last cycle.
