The two recruitments share a conducting body and a portal but almost nothing else. The TGT route rewards a graduate degree and a teaching qualification and settles entirely on a written score, which makes the cut-off the whole contest. The PGT route requires a master's, pays one level higher and reserves a tenth of the final score for an interview.

Only the result and the PGT cycle dates are firm. Everything relating to the next TGT advertisement, including its size and its examination pattern, is at the reported or expected stage. Treat any date circulating for a new TGT notification as unverified until the commission publishes it.

The most common error is treating UP TGT as a junior version of UP PGT and preparing from post-graduate material. It is not. TGT posts teach classes 9 and 10, the qualifying bar is a bachelor's degree plus B.Ed rather than a master's, and the written paper has historically been pitched at graduation level. A second error follows from the first: because TGT selection has no interview, the written score is the entire selection, and the published cut-offs show how unforgiving that is.

TGT selection runs written examination then document verification. There is no interview stage to recover marks in, which is the structural difference from PGT, where 40 of 400 marks sit with a board. In the concluded 2022 cycle the paper carried 125 questions at four marks each for a maximum of 500, over two hours, with no negative marking. With no penalty for a wrong answer and a purely written merit list, leaving a question blank has no defence: an unattempted question is a guaranteed zero while a guess has positive expected value. Candidates who carried over the cautious habits of negatively marked exams left marks on the table in a contest decided in single figures.

The cut-offs published with the 29 July 2026 result are the single most useful planning input on this page, because they show that TGT is a high-accuracy exam rather than a high-difficulty one. For male candidates in the 2022 cycle the unreserved cut-off was 480 out of 500 in Art, 460 in Agriculture and 460 in Urdu, with reserved-category thresholds only eight to twenty marks below. At four marks a question, an unreserved Art cut-off of 480 means five wrong or unattempted questions out of 125 was the practical limit. Preparation aimed at understanding the syllabus is insufficient; the target is near-total recall across the whole subject range.

Coaching sites report that the next cycle will use 120 questions worth 360 marks, with 90 subject questions and 30 general studies questions, three marks each and negative marking introduced. The general studies block is described as covering current affairs, teaching and research aptitude, ICT, environment, Indian history and geography, and the constitution and economy. Sources disagree on the penalty, one describing one-third of a mark and another a full mark. None of this appears in a commission advertisement. Prepare the subject at its established depth, because that part is stable, and treat general studies as insurance that costs little: thirty questions would be a quarter of the paper if the reports hold.

Vacancy volume is wildly uneven across the 16 TGT subjects and this is decided before a candidate opens a book. In the 2022 cycle English carried 511 posts for men and 46 for women, Hindi 509 and 48, Mathematics 508 and 25, and Science 499 and 41. Against that, Agriculture had 47 posts for men and none for women, Urdu 12 and 1, Commerce 38 and none, and instrumental music four and six. A specialist subject with a strong eligibility barrier can be a better bet than a mainstream one despite the small post count, because the eligible pool is correspondingly small, but only if the candidate already holds the qualifying degree.

TGT eligibility is set subject by subject and several subjects do not follow the graduate-degree-plus-B.Ed template. Art accepts a BA in drawing or painting, a diploma in fine arts from Kala Bhawan Shantiniketan, or recognised drawing certificates. Music accepts Sangeet Visharad, Sangeet Prabhakar and equivalents. Physical Education requires a C.P.Ed certificate or equivalent. Age was 21 to 60 in the last cycle, reckoned as at 1 July. Because the commission's statute changed in 2023 and an amending act followed in 2026, older eligibility notes circulating online may be out of date. Read the qualification clause in the advertisement for the specific subject before paying a fee.
