The AME and AWM professional syllabus

ComponentWhat the syllabus lists
Establishment and financial rules (common part)Railway service conditions, conduct rules, retirement benefits, labour laws, manpower planning, parliamentary financial control, budgeting and works programmes
Optional stream: division and workshop managementMaintenance schedules, quality systems and disaster management
Optional stream: diesel locomotivesEngine systems, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and fuel economy
Optional stream: carriage and wagonCoaching stock maintenance, brake systems, corrosion repair and LHB coaches
Optional stream: workshopsMachinery operation, welding, heat treatment and bearing maintenance

The choice of stream is the feature that separates the Mechanical paper from the other engineering LDCEs, where the professional portion is a single undifferentiated pool. Note one discrepancy in the sources: the syllabus page sets this content out under a two-section structure of 150 marks each with 90 to pass in each section, while the notifications for the current cycle describe a single objective paper of 150 marks with 80 marks of technical content. Treat the stream list as the reliable part and the notification as authoritative on marks.

Only the first two rows are specific to AME, and then only to Southern Railway; the Mechanical notification in another zone opened on its own dates. The written, result and panel dates are the centralised calendar shared by all eight posts in the examination under Board letter E(GP)2024/2/37.

What this means for your preparation

The AME paper is the one engineering LDCE where the candidate makes a choice, and the choice is usually made badly. Four mechanical streams are on offer and most candidates take the one matching their present posting without checking how much of it the syllabus actually lists. Two of the four streams are described in the syllabus in far more operational detail than the other two, and detail is what an objective paper can be built from.

Choosing between the four mechanical streams

Division and workshop management is listed as maintenance schedules, quality systems and disaster management, which is a short and largely procedural head. Workshops is listed as machinery operation, welding, heat treatment and bearing maintenance, also compact and factual. Diesel locomotives runs to engine systems, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and fuel economy, and carriage and wagon to coaching stock maintenance, brake systems, corrosion repair and LHB coaches. A candidate whose work covers two of these should weigh the breadth of the listed content against the depth of their own exposure, because in an objective paper a narrow head with sharply defined content is usually easier to exhaust than a broad one.

The general portion is class twelve, not degree level

Outside the chosen stream, the syllabus sets out a general portion pitched deliberately low: arithmetic, statistics, graphs, percentages, geometry, algebra and mechanics including velocity, acceleration and work, expressly to class twelve standard, with general knowledge described as matriculation standard and weighted towards national and railway achievements. Then come engineering materials and mechanics, being properties of materials, bearings, stress and strain, fatigue, hardness and corrosion, and a thermodynamics and electrical block covering temperature measurement, heat transfer, internal combustion engines, gas turbines, Ohm's law, motors, dynamos and power supply. Candidates who have been out of study for fifteen years lose more marks here than in their own stream.

A nine-mark normalisation gap changes how you read your score

Because the paper was written on 24 and 31 May 2026 with half of each department on each date, scores are normalised. For AME the reported gap is 9.25 marks, averages of 55.39 and 46.14 out of 150 across 3,398 and 3,500 candidates, the third largest of the eight posts. That is large enough to reorder a substantial part of the field. An AME candidate from the higher-scoring date should not read a comfortable-looking raw mark as a comfortable position, and one from the lower-scoring date should not concede on a raw mark alone. These are reported figures from a specialist departmental blog, not an official Board release.

Running staff eligibility in the Mechanical department

The Mechanical feeder pool is not only shop and shed technical staff. An East Central Railway AME notification for an earlier cycle lists permanent Group C technical and running staff of the department holding Level 6 with Grade Pay Rs 4,200, Level 7 with Grade Pay Rs 4,600, and Loco Pilot Shunting-II in Level 4 treated as of equivalent status, each needing a minimum of five years regular non-fortuitous service in the grade as on the notified cut-off. Because that notification belongs to an earlier cycle, its cut-off date and its single advertised vacancy do not apply now; the grade list is what carries forward, and the current cut-off should be read from your own zone's notification.

Level 8, and the promotional half of the Group A ladder

AME is a Pay Matrix Level 8 post, reached from Level 6 or Level 7 in the feeder, so the jump is one or two levels depending on where the candidate starts. Above Group B, the Indian Railway Management Service (Group A) Rules 2022 fill 50 per cent of Junior Time Scale vacancies, Level 10 at Rs 56,100 to 1,77,500, by promotion through selection from Group B officers in Level 8 or Level 9 with at least three years regular service in the grade, the other half going to direct recruits through the Civil Services Examination. Senior Time Scale is Level 11. The three-year clock starts only after the AME panel gives you the Level 8 post.

Common questions

Do I need a mechanical engineering degree for the railway AME 30 per cent LDCE?

No educational qualification appears in the AME eligibility conditions. The East Central Railway AME notification for an earlier cycle specifies none beyond the grade and service requirements, and defines the feeder pool as permanent Group C technical and running staff of the Mechanical department in Level 6, Grade Pay Rs 4,200, Level 7, Grade Pay Rs 4,600, or Loco Pilot Shunting-II in Level 4 treated as equivalent, with a minimum of five years regular non-fortuitous service in the grade. A degree is neither required nor separately credited.

Which optional stream should I take in the AME professional paper?

Four are listed: division and workshop management, diesel locomotives, carriage and wagon, and workshops. The syllabus describes division and workshop management as maintenance schedules, quality systems and disaster management, and workshops as machinery operation, welding, heat treatment and bearing maintenance, both compact heads. Diesel locomotives covers engine systems, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and fuel economy; carriage and wagon covers coaching stock maintenance, brake systems, corrosion repair and LHB coaches. Match the stream to the content you can finish rather than to your current posting alone.

Can a Loco Pilot Shunting apply for AME through the LDCE?

The East Central Railway notification for an earlier AME cycle expressly lists Loco Pilot Shunting-II in Level 4 as of equivalent status to the eligible feeder grades, alongside Level 6 at Grade Pay Rs 4,200 and Level 7 at Grade Pay Rs 4,600, with the same five-year regular non-fortuitous service condition. Because eligibility of running categories is set out notification by notification and that one belongs to an earlier cycle, a running-staff candidate should confirm the equation in their own zone's current Mechanical notification before applying.

How many candidates sat the AME paper in 2026 and how did they score?

A post-wise analysis of the two sittings reports 3,398 candidates on one date and 3,500 on the other, close to 6,900 in all, with averages of 55.39 and 46.14 out of 150. The 9.25-mark difference is the third largest of the eight posts, behind AOM at 13.42 and ACM at 13.19, and is the reason normalisation matters more for AME than for AEN or ASTE. The figures come from a specialist departmental blog rather than an official Board release.

What is the AME exam pattern and pass mark?

The notifications for this family describe a single centralised objective paper of three hours, 175 questions offered with 150 to be attempted for 150 marks, split as 80 marks technical or professional, 40 marks general knowledge with official language policy and 30 marks establishment and financial rules, with 90 marks to qualify and one-third of a mark deducted for each wrong answer. Viva-voce and record of service carry 25 marks each. One syllabus page describes a different two-section 300-mark structure; the notification governs.

When did applications for AME close in this cycle?

Zone by zone. Southern Railway's Mechanical notification, G25043, opened on 1 August 2025 at 18:00 hrs and closed on 21 August 2025 at 23:59 hrs, the same window it used for ASTE and APO. The vacancy cycle being filled is 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026 including anticipated vacancies to 30 June 2027. The centralised written test was held on 24 and 31 May 2026, with the result calendared for 22 June 2026 and panel finalisation for 27 July 2026.
