Goods Train Manager is consistently the largest graduate-level block in a GDCE advertisement, because zonal railways run far more guard vacancies than Station Master vacancies. East Central Railway's 389 posts against 9 Station Master posts in the same notification is the clearest illustration; Eastern Railway thought the category large enough to run a dedicated traffic-only GDCE for it.

There is no single Goods Train Manager GDCE calendar. Each zone notifies against its own quota, so the only window that matters to an employee is the one published by the zone that employs them.
Candidates routinely assume Goods Train Manager runs the same selection as Station Master because both are graduate posts sitting next to each other in the same notification. They do not. Goods Train Manager is decided on the CBT alone, with no aptitude test and no typing test, so the written score is the entire competition. It also carries the same A-2 safety medical as Station Master while paying one level less, at Level 5 against Level 6.
Eastern Railway's GDCE-01/2024 states the process for Goods Train Manager as a single-stage Computer Based Test followed by document verification and medical examination, with no aptitude or typing component. Central Railway's GDCE-02/2026 likewise lists no special test against the post, reserving the Computer Based Aptitude Test for Assistant Loco Pilot and Station Master. The consequence is that the CBT score is the final merit score, undiluted. There is no second stage in which a weaker written performance can be recovered, and equally no second stage that can undo a strong one, which makes the post more predictable to prepare for than Station Master.
The Goods Train Manager CBT under Central Railway's GDCE-02/2026 runs 120 objective questions in 90 minutes, drawn as General Awareness 50, Mathematics 35 and General Intelligence and Reasoning 35, with one-third of a mark deducted for each wrong answer. Qualifying marks are 40 per cent for UR, 30 for OBC non-creamy layer, 30 for SC and 25 for ST. This is the same paper served to Station Master applicants in the same notification, even though Goods Train Manager is Level 5 and Station Master is Level 6. An employee eligible for both should note that the harder post to win is not the harder paper to sit.
Eastern Railway records Goods Train Manager as a safety category post requiring medical classification A-2 without glasses, and independent post-wise medical tables for the equivalent RRB Goods Guard post give the same classification. A-2 means 6/9 distance vision in each eye without any correction, near vision of Sn 0.6 without glasses, and passes in colour, binocular, field and night vision. Serving staff in commercial, accounts or clerical streams who have worked their whole career under a B or C classification often discover only at the final medical that they cannot clear A-2. The eye test should be settled privately before the application, not after the panel.
Across the three notifications sourced here, Goods Train Manager carries 389 posts on East Central Railway, 166 on Eastern Railway and 54 on Central Railway, against Station Master counts of 9 and 57 in the same advertisements. For a graduate serving employee the arithmetic is straightforward: the same degree qualification and the same written paper give access to a pool of posts that is often an order of magnitude larger. The trade-off is Level 5 rather than Level 6 and a running duty roster rather than a station posting, which is a career preference rather than a competitive disadvantage.
Eastern Railway opened its Goods Train Manager GDCE to regular railway employees working in lower or the same grade at Eastern Railway, Metro Railway and Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, which is a notably wide feeder pool including a production unit. East Central Railway similarly extends to regular employees of the zone and of RWP Bela, excludes RPF and RPSF, and imposes no minimum service following RBE No. 112/2023. What all zones enforce strictly is that the graduation must be recorded in the service register by the application closing date, and that the employee has not resigned from or transferred out of the notifying zone.
Yes. Goods Train Manager is the current designation for what was formerly the Goods Guard post, and zonal GDCE notifications use the new name. Eastern Railway's GDCE-01/2024 advertises it as Goods Train Manager in the Traffic department at Level 5 of the 7th CPC matrix. Post-wise medical tables published for the corresponding RRB non-technical graduate recruitment still list the category as Goods Guard with medical classification A-2, and the standard is the same under either name.
No. Eastern Railway's GDCE-01/2024 sets the selection as a single-stage CBT followed by document verification and medical examination, and states no aptitude or typing test. Central Railway's GDCE-02/2026 reserves the Computer Based Aptitude Test for Assistant Loco Pilot and Station Master only. Goods Train Manager merit is therefore decided entirely on the CBT score, unlike Station Master, where the aptitude test carries 30 per cent of the final weightage alongside 70 per cent for the CBT.
Level 5 of the 7th Central Pay Commission matrix, one level below Station Master. Eastern Railway's notification requires a graduation degree from a recognised university or its equivalent, placing the post in the non-technical graduate stream alongside Station Master rather than in the undergraduate clerical stream that Commercial cum Ticket Clerk belongs to. The degree must be entered in the employee's service register by the closing date of the application window for the claim to be accepted at document verification.
East Central Railway's cycle, notified on 11 September 2026, carries 389 Goods Train Manager posts with applications open from 15 September to 15 October 2026, as reported by the Free Press Journal and FreeJobAlert. Central Railway's 54 posts under GDCE-02/2026 closed on 21 May 2026, and Eastern Railway's 166 posts under GDCE-01/2024 closed earlier. Only employees of the notifying zone may apply against that zone's vacancies, so the live figure for any individual is whatever their own zone has published.
A-2, recorded by Eastern Railway as a safety category standard to be met without glasses. In practice that means distance vision of 6/9 in each eye and near vision of Sn 0.6 with no correction permitted, plus passes in colour vision, binocular vision, field of vision and night vision. It is the same standard as Station Master and considerably stricter than the B-2 classification applied to Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, where corrective lenses up to 4D are allowed for the distance test.
It depends on the zonal notification. Eastern Railway's GDCE-01/2024 expressly admitted regular employees of Eastern Railway, Metro Railway and Chittaranjan Locomotive Works who are working in lower or the same grade, so a production unit employee was eligible there. East Central Railway's 2026 notification covers regular employees of the zone and of RWP Bela. RPF and RPSF personnel are excluded in both. The governing rule is always the feeder description printed in that specific notification, not a general railway-wide rule.
